1. National Science Day being observed today

  • India celebrates National Science Day on 28th February of every year to commemorate the discovery of the Raman effect (in 1928) by Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman.
  • The objective of the day is to spread the message of the importance of science and its application among the people.
  • The theme of the year 2020 is "Women in Science."
  • In 1986 itself, the government designated 28 February as National Science Day.

2. Indian Coast Guard's Offshore Patrol Vessel ICGS Varad commissioned

  • ICGS Varad (98-meter-long), built by Larsen & Toubro has been commissioned for the surveillance of India's Exclusive Economic Zone and to safeguard the maritime interests of the country.
  • Varad will be based at Paradip, Odisha.
  • Integrated Bridge System, Platform Management System, Automated Power Management System and High-Power External Fire-Fighting system with capacity to carry twin engine helicopter and four high speed boats are its onboard features.

3. Capacity Building Programme for Scheduled Tribe PRI Representatives

  • Union Tribal Affairs Minister Shri Arjun Munda launched “Programme for Capacity Building of Scheduled Tribe Representatives in Local Self Governments” at Bhubhaneswar (Odisha).
  • He also launched “1000 Spring Initiatives” and an online portal on GIS-based Spring Atlas with hydrological and chemical properties of the Springs.
  • FRA Atlas of Odisha and short documentary film on FRA (Forest Rights Act) in Odisha were also released on the occasion.

4. External benchmark-based lending for Medium Enterprises

  • The Reserve Bank of India has directed all Scheduled Commercial Banks (excluding RRBs), Small Finance Banks and Local Area Banks to link the new floating rate loans given to medium enterprises with external benchmarks.
  • Micro and small enterprises floating rate loans are already linked with external benchmarks.
  • The move will be effective from April 1, 2020.
  • It will strengthen the monetary policy transmission.

6. NTPC to give financial aid to set up air quality monitoring stations

  • The NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) Ltd has signed an agreement with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to provide Rs 80 crore financial assistance for installation and commissioning of Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS).
  • 25 Air Quality Monitoring Stations will be installed across 6 states (Jharkhand, UP, Maharashtra, MP, Bihar and TN) and 3 UT (Daman & Diu, Dadar & Nagar Haveli and Andaman & Nicobar Islands).
