Stop Lynchings: The Times of India

Bigotry (intolerance towards those who hold different opinions from oneself) fed by social media is at an all-time high, the official response is sorely (to a very high degree) disappointing
The spate (a large number of similar things coming in quick succession) of lynchings (premeditated extrajudicial killing by group) reported from across India requires intervention at the highest levels of the central and state governments. No place appears safe from the deadly cocktail of social media and rumour-mongering (the act of spreading rumors) centered on child lifting and cattle theft/slaughter. The latest incident from Dhule in Maharashtra, where the accused from a tribal village lynched five nomads (A nomad is a member of a community of people who live in different locations, moving from one place to another in search of grasslands for their animals) seeking alms, reveals a dangerous pattern. In almost every case related to child lifting, the victims were strangers unfortunate to pass by an area in which rumors were circulating wildly.
In the gau raksha lynchings too, an atmosphere of communal discord and hatred against Muslims prepared fertile ground for vigilantism (law enforcement undertaken without legal authority by a self-appointed group of people) to ensue (happen). The scale of the lynching menace (a threat or danger) is evident from the murderous assault (a physical attack) on a daily wager hired by Tripura government to create awareness against rumours and exercising prudence (cautiousness). This is not an issue which government can outsource to private individuals or agencies. It stems from a fundamental distrust and dysfunctionality of the criminal justice delivery system. Only fear of the law can disperse a prospective mob before it forms.
