BANKING & ECONOMY
  • The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Jun 06 has increased the key policy rate or the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.25% as inflation outlook worsens due to a rise in crude oil prices.
  • RBI has retained GDP growth for 2018-19 at 7.4% as projected in the April policy.
  • According to Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), foreign direct investment (FDI) in India has increased by 3% to US $61.96 billion in 2017-18.
  • According to 2018 UNCTAD'S World Investment Report, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to India has decreased to 40 billion dollars in 2017 from 44 billion dollars in 2016.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the promulgation of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018 on Jun 06, 2018.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will set up a Public Credit Registry (PCR) as a repository of information regarding loan information of individuals and corporate borrowers.
    • The decision taken as per the recommendation of Y.M. Deosthalee committee set up by the central bank.
  • The World Bank approved Rs. 6000 crore for Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABHY), a Central Sector Scheme of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.
  • The Reserve Bank of India is conducting Financial Literacy Week from Jun 04 on the theme ‘Customer Protection’ with aims to focus on creating awareness among customers of banks.

NATIONAL NEWS
  • According to Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation, rural sanitation coverage of India rose to 85% under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM).
  • The Central Govt has decided to raise five Indian Reserve Police (IRP) battalions in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) with an aim to provide jobs to local youths.
  • India has hosted the 11th edition of Geo-Intelligence Asia 2018 at Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi with the theme ‘GeoSpatial: A Force Multiplier for Defense and Internal Security’.
  • Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) has revised cost and deadline of World Bank funded Dam Rehabilitation & Improvement Project (DRIP) to Rs.3466 Crore till Jun 2020.
  • The Union Govt constituted a group of eminent persons to study the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) Policy of India.
  • The National Consultation on Accelerating Implementation of Tobacco Control Measures for achievement of Goals under National Health Policy (2017) has been inaugurated by Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey in New Delhi.
  • Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has emerged as the top-ranked institute from India in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2019.

  • The Election Commission of India has launched an online RTI portal to help applicants seeking information under the Right To Information Act.
  • The screening of the biopic ‘Making of the Mahatma’ in Pietermaritzburg on Jun 06 marked the opening of a three-day series of events to commemorate the historic incident 125 years ago when Mahatma Gandhi was evicted from a train because the compartment he was in was reserved for whites only.
  • The two-day 49th Conference of Governors and Lieutenant Governors concluded at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

  • The Union Ministry of Culture has launched a new scheme, ‘Seva Bhoj Yojna’ with a total outlay of Rs. 325 Crores for Financial Years 2018-19 and 2019-20.
  • India has received the first shipment of its so far cheapest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Russian supplier Gazprom.

  • The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) in Telangana has received the approval of Technical Advisory Committee of the Union govt in Delhi.
  • The Maharashtra govt has announced to provide financial grant of Rs 1000 per quintal to those farmers whose tur and gram could not be purchased by the administration before the May 31 deadline.
  • The Uttarakhand govt has decided to completely prohibit the use of polythene or plastic from July 31, 2018.

    • Jharkhand will become plastic-free by Jun 05, 2019.
    • Maharashtra will be totally free of plastic in the next one year.
  • Earlier, Sikkim became the first state in 1998 to ban disposable plastic bags.

  • The Mandela-Gandhi Youth Conference held at Pietermaritzburg in South Africa on Jun 08, 2018.
  • The 18th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit has been concluded in Qingdao, China with the adoption of the Qingdao declaration.
    • It was adopted by leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan.
  • India submitted Berne declaration relating to Article II and III of Appendix to Paris Act (1971) to Berne Convention for Protection of Literary and Artistic Works.
  • United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has elected South Africa, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, Germany and Belgium as non-permanent members of UN Security Council (UNSC) for two-year term beginning Jan 1, 2019.
  • China has awarded its first highest state honour Friendship Medal to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
  • The Fuego volcano, in Guatemala, has recently erupted violently and buried several villages on its southern flank.
  • The Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Third Asia-Pacific Regional Policy Forum on Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) held in Kathmandu, Nepal.

  • India’s first indigenous, long-range artillery gun Dhanush has been successfully passed its final test at Pokhran, Rajasthan.
  • Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has commissioned interceptor ship ICGS C 439 at Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • Trilateral Naval Exercise Malabar 2018 between India, Japan and United States has kicked off the coast of Guam in Philippine Sea.
  • Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sunayana successfully evacuated 38 Indian Nationals from Socotra Island in Yemen under the operation named, Operation NISTAR.
    • 38 nationals were stranded for nearly 10 days after a severe Cyclonic storm Mekunu hit the area.
  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has approved proposal for procurement of equipment for Defence Forces worth Rs. 5500 crore.

  • India and China have signed two Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) related to sharing of Brahmaputra river data and supply of non-Basmati rice.

  • India has been ranked 136th among 163 countries in Global Peace Index 2018.
    • Iceland ranked the most peaceful country in the world, followed by New Zealand and Austria.
  • India has been ranked at 113 among 175 countries in the “End of Childhood Index 2018”.
    • Singapore and Slovenia are placed at the top sharing the first place in the index and Niger figures at the end of the list at 175.

  • Indian captain Virat Kohli will receive the Polly Umrigar Award for the best international cricketer (2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons) at the BCCI awards.
  • Veteran film actor, Anupam Kher will be awarded with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement honour at the 19th edition of International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards ceremony in Bangkok.
  • The Chandrabhaga beach on the Konark coast of Odisha becomes the Asia’s first beach to get the Blue Flag certification the tag given to environment-friendly and clean beaches, equipped with amenities of international standards for tourists.
  • A. Dhiraj Ram Krishna won the ‘National Gopal Ratna’ award from the Central Govt for cattle rearing and dairying.

  • India has begun its campaign at the 2018 Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Gifu, Japan with a strong start by clinching four medals–a gold, a silver and two bronze from 07.
  • Indian cricketer Mithali Raj has become the first female batter from the country to score 2000 runs in T20I cricket.
  • India’s Sanjana Ramesh won the ‘Most Valuable Player’ (MVP) award at the Basketball Without Borders Asia 2018, which featured 66 campers from 16 countries from the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Kagiso Rabada, the world's number one Test bowler, has been named South Africa's Cricketer of the Year.
  • India cricket captain Virat Kohli is the sole player from India to be featured in the world's highest-paid athletes, according to a Forbes' compilation.
