1. Arvind Saxena appointed as acting UPSC Chairman

  • Shri Arvind Saxena (1978-batch Indian Postal Service officer) has been appointed as the acting chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
  • He will take over the charge from incumbent Vinay Mittal who completes his term on 19th June 2018.
  • Mr Saxena joined (8 May 2015) the UPSC after he completed his stint in the Aviation Research Centre (ARC).
Arvind Saxena:
  • Arvind Saxena studied Civil Engineering at the Delhi College of Engineering and did his MTech. in Systems & Management from the Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) New Delhi in 1978.
  • The UPSC conducts civil services examination annually in three stages (preliminary, main and interview) to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.
  • The Chairman and members of UPSC are appointed and removed by President, as per Article 316 of the constitution.

2. Sharad Kumar appointed as vigilance commissioner

  • Ex-NIA chief Shri Sharad Kumar (Retd. Indian Police Service-1979 batch) has been appointed as the Vigilance Commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission.
  • Mr Kumar retired in September last year after heading the National Investigation Agency(NIA) for over four years.
  • The Commission comprises central vigilance commissioner and two vigilance commissioners.
  • At present, K V Chowdary is the CVC and T M Bhasin is the other vigilance commissioner.
  • Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) is an apex Indian governmental body created in 1964 to address governmental corruption.

3. 12 June: World Day Against Child Labour

  • The World Day Against Child Labour held every year on 12th June to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour.
  • This year, the World Day Against Child Labour and the World Day for Safety and Health at Work shine a spotlight on the global need to improve the safety and health of young workers and end child labour.

4. India’s first national police museum to come up in Delhi

  • The Union Government has decided to establish India’s first national police museum in Chanakyapuri area of the national capital.
  • The items will include brass insignia, ceremonial and operational head gears and uniforms, batons, belts, distinctive photographs of dog squads, mounted columns and old copies of the Indian Police Act.
  • The museum is expected to be inaugurated on Police Commemoration Day (21st October).
  • Every year on 21st October, a memorial service is conducted at the site to pay tributes to the men and women in khaki who laid down their lives at the altar of duty.

5. 11th World Hindi Conference to be held in Mauritius

  • The 11th World Hindi Conference (WHC) to be held in Port Louis (Mauritius) from 18-20th August 2018.
  • The main theme of the Conference is “Hindi Vishwa Aur Bharatiy Sanskriti”.
  • The 10th World Hindi Conference (WHC) is being organized from 10-12 September 2015 in the city of Bhopal.
  • The first World Hindi Conference was held 10 January 1975 in Nagpur, India.
  • The World Hindi Conference is a major event organised every three years by the External Affairs Ministry.
  • The conference consists of several Hindi scholars, writers and laureates from different parts of the world to contribute the language.

6. Union Government launches 5000 Wi-Fi Choupals in villages

  • The Union Electronics & IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has launched 5,000 Wi-Fi Choupals (community space in the rural areas) in villages and delivery of rail tickets through Common Service Centres (CSCs) in New Delhi.
  • The move is aimed at transforming rural Internet connectivity through BharatNet.
  • The WiFi Choupals will enable people in rural areas with an effective Internet access for their various digital processes.

7. The union govt. launches 'Rail MADAD', 'Menu On Rails' mobile apps

  • The Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has launched two mobile applications 'Rail MADAD' and 'Menu on Rails' to ease the travelling experience.
  • Rail MADAD will enable travellers to lodge complaints, Menu on Rails will facilitate seamless ordering of food.
  • According to the Mr Goyal ‘Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh’ has been created with a corpus of one lakh crore rupees for making additional funds available for safety-related works.

8. Grand Finale of Smart India Hackathon 2018- Hardware edition to be held from 18th to 22nd June

  • The Grand Finale of Smart India Hackathon 2018- Hardware edition will be held from 18th to 22nd June 2018.
  • The Hardware edition is the innovative initiative by the Human Resources Development Ministry to provide a national platform to young technical minds to showcase their innovations and creative products.
  • The grand finale will take place simultaneously at 10 institutions, including IITs of Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati, CEERI Pilani, IISc Bengaluru among others.
  • After two internal rounds of evaluation, 106 teams have been shortlisted to compete under the 10 themes.
  • The winning team will get a cash prize of one lakh rupees, first runner-up (75 thousand rupees) and second runner-up (50 thousand rupees).

9. 2.5 lacks gram panchayats to be provided broadband connectivity by March next year

  • The Minister of communication (independent charge) Manoj Sinha has expressed hope that all the 2.5 lacks gram panchayats will be provided broadband connectivity by March 2019.
  • One lakh gram panchayats have been provided with hi-speed broadband connectivity under the Bharat Net Project.
  • The internet coverage has increased over 75% from 251 million users to 446 million.
  • The department has also taken proactive steps to move the country to the forefront on the global stage in this technology-driven sector.


10. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel wins Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal

  • Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel dominated the Canadian Grand Prix to retake the championship lead as Lewis Hamilton could finish only fifth for Mercedes.
  • It was Vettel’s 50th career Formula One victory.
  • Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas finished second and Red Bull's Max Verstappen third.

11. Gaurav Bidhuri bags bronze medal in Umakhanov Memorial Tournament in Russia

  • India's Gaurav Bidhuri has settled for a bronze medal in 56kg of the Umakhanov Memorial Tournament in Kaspiysk, Russia.
  • World Championships bronze-medallist Bidhuri lost to Kazakhstan's Siroshiddin Abdullayev in a split 2-3 decision, rounding off.
  • Two Indian boxers Brijesh Yadav (81kg) and Virender Kumar (91kg) have advanced to the finals scheduled for today.
