1. Anukreethy Vas Crowned as Femina Miss India World 2018

  • Anukreethy Vas (19-year-from Tamil Nadu) has been crowned fbb Colors ‘Femina Miss India 2018’ (55th edition) in an extravagant ceremony at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Indoor Stadium, Mumbai.
  • Meenakshi Chaudhary (21-year from Harayana) was declared the first runner-up while Shrey Rao Kamvarapu (23-year from Andhra Pradesh) stood as the second runner-up in the beauty competition.
  • The Judges panel included cricketers K L Rahul and Irfan Pathan, actors Bobby Deol, Malaika Arora& Kunal Kapoor, Gaurav Gupta (Indian Fashion Designer) and Faye D'Souza (Indian Journalist).
  • The winners from all 29 states and the winner of the national capital Delhi competed for the crowns.
  • Manushi Chhillar (Miss World 2017), Sana Dua (Miss India United Continents 2017) and Priyanka Kumari (Miss India Intercontinental 2017) crowned their successor at the end of the event.

  • ‘Miss India’ is a national beauty pageant in India that annually selects representatives to compete in Miss World.

National Affairs

2. Governor’s rule imposed in Jammu and Kashmir

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the imposition of Governor’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect.
  • Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti (PDP leader) submitted her resignation to Governor NN Vohra, after coalition partner BJP pulled out from the alliance government with People's Democratic Party (PDP).
Note:
  • President's rule refers to the suspension of the state Govt. and an imposition of direct Central Government rule in a state.
  • Under Article 356 of the Constitution of India, if the state government is unable to function according to constitutional provisions, the Central government can take direct control of the state machinery.

3. Handbook on the legal process on crimes against children launched 

  • The Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has launched the Handbook on legal processes for Police in respect of Crime against Children in New Delhi.
  • Ms Gandhi urged all stakeholders to unite in preventing and combating crimes against children.
  • She highlighted that the government is committed to create a nation free of violence against women and children.
  • According to Gandhi, the book will definitely prove to be a tool to enhance and fine-tune the skills of the end user in the application of the laws, rules, rulings and related provisions pertaining to Crimes Against Children.
  • The Minister also mentioned the e-box Complaint System for the school children to come up against the issues of sexual harassment.

4. Indian Army observes 2018 as the year of disabled soldiers in line of duty

  • The Army is observing this year as the Year of Disabled Soldiers in Line of Duty to honour soldiers.
  • The primary focus is towards alleviating the sufferings of these soldiers, who have done their duty with utmost dedication to the Nation and have been disabled for the life.
  • The endeavour this year is to provide a one-time financial assistance to disabled soldiers who have been boarded out from service on medical grounds and are rendered non-employable due to their medical or physical conditions.

5. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar launches National Digital Library of India

  • The Human Resources Development Minister ‘Prakash Javadekar’ has launched the National Digital Library of India (NDLI), single window platform for all educational needs.
  • The library can be accessed at ndl.iitkgp.ac.in.
  • The library is an integrated platform for schools, colleges, universities, teachers, and students.
  • Users can register for free on the National Digital Library from Google Play store.
  • Over 35 lakh e-books in more than 200 languages are available in the library.
  • The National Digital Library will provide a disruptive innovation designed to overcome these challenges.

6. Telangana govt to set up Child Protection Units in all 31 districts

  • The Telangana government will set up ‘District Child Protection Units (DCPU)’ in all 31 districts to implement child rights and prevent abuse of children.
  • Currently, these units located in 10 districts of the state.
  • Child Protection Units will coordinate and implement child rights and among its other objectives were to prevent child abuse and protect children.

7. Grand Finale of the First Hardware edition of Smart India Hackathon 2018

  • The Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) Shri Prakash Javadekar has inaugurated the five-day event Grand Finale of Smart India Hackathon 2018 – Hardware edition through Video conference in New Delhi.
  • The Grand Finale of the Hardware Hackathon will take place simultaneously at 10 prestigious institutions (Nodal centres) across India.
  • The Hardware edition is the sub-edition of SIH2018.
Note:
  • Hardware edition is the first of its kind innovative initiative by Ministry of HRD to provide a national platform to young technical minds of India to showcase their disruptive innovations and creative products which can bring out revolutionary changes.

8. Australian golfing great Peter Thomson passes away

  • Five-time British Open champion Australian golfing great Peter Thomson (88 -years) passed away at his home in Melbourne.
  • Thomson was the first from the country to win the British Open when he took the title in 1954.
  • He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988.

9. RBI revises upwards home loan limits under priority sector to give the fillip to low-cost segment

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised the Priority Sector Lending (PSL) guidelines for housing loans with Affordable Housing definition under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).
  • Housing loans of up to 35 lakh rupees for dwellings costing less than 45 lakh rupees, will be treated as priority sector lending to give a fillip to the low-cost segment.
  • Priority Sector Lending (PSL) is relatively cheaper than a market interest rate.
  • The overall cost of the dwelling unit in the metropolitan centre should not exceed Rs 45 lakh and Rs 30 lakh at other centres for being classified as the priority sector.
  • The RBI has also revised existing family income limit of Rs 2 lakh per annum (now -3 lakh) for loans to housing projects for Economically Weaker Sections and Low-Income Groups – Rs. 6 lakhs per annum.

10. NSG plenary meeting held in Jurmala, Latvia

  • The 28th Plenary Meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) was held in Jurmala, Latvia.
  • The NSG plenary meeting was chaired by Ambassador Jānis Zlamets of Latvia.
  • The NSG reviewed the developments since the last meeting in Bern in 2017.
  • The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) is a group of nuclear supplier countries that seeks to contribute to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons through the implementation of two sets of Guidelines for nuclear exports and nuclear-related exports.

11. England hit ODI world record 481 in thrashing Australia

  • England posted the highest total ever scored in a men's one-day international (ODI) of 481 for 6 at Trent Bridge, England.
  • England thrashed Australia by 242 runs.
  • Earlier in 2016, England posted record ODI score following their 444 for 3 against Pakistan at this ground in England.
