Rafael Nadal wins 2018 French Open title

  • Spain's Rafael Nadal (32-year) has lifted his 11th French Open Men's Singles title.
  • He defeated Austrian Dominic Thiem in straight sets 6-4 6-3 6-2.
  • With the win (17th grand slam), Nadal joins Australia's Margaret Court as the only player to win 11 titles at the same major.
Note:
  • The French Open officially called ‘Roland-Garros’ is a major tennis tournament held at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, France.
  • The venue is named after the French aviator Roland Garros.
  • It is the second of four annual Grand Slam tournaments the other three being the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Simona Halep wins 2018 French Open women’s singles crown

  • Romania's Simona Halep (World number one) beat American Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 at Roland Garros to win the first Grand Slam title 'French Open Women’s Singles 2018'.
  • Now, she became the second Romanian woman to win a Grand Slam title after the 1978 French Open champion Virginia Ruzici.
  • This was Halep's fourth major final and has lost all three in the past.
 Note:
  •  The total prize money for the French open 2018 edition is €39,197,000.
  • The winners of the men's (€2,200,000) and women's (€2,200,000) singles title receive.

India beat Kenya to lift Intercontinental Cup football title

  • India defeated Kenya 2-0 and lifted the Intercontinental Cup football title in Mumbai.
  • Both the goals were netted by India's skipper Sunil Chhetri.
  • Now, Sunil Chhetri has become the joint second highest international goal scorer among active players along with superstar Lionel Messi (Argentina) with his 64th strike for the country against Kenya.
Note:
  • The 2018 Intercontinental Cup is a 4-team (Chinese Taipei,N ew Zealand, Kenya,I ndia) association football tournament held at the Mumbai Football Arena in the Indian city of Mumbai between the 1st and 10th of June 2018.
  • The tournament is organized by the AIFF as part of the senior men's team's preparation for 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

Bangladesh beat India to lift maiden Women's Asia Cup T20 title

  • Bangladesh defeated India (defending champion) by three wickets to clinch their maiden Women's Asia Cup T20 title at the Kinrara Academy Oval, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • India has set a victory target of 113 for Bangladesh in the Final.
  • Chasing 113, Bangladesh reached the target off the final delivery to record a historic title win over India.
Note:
  • The 2018 Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup was the seventh edition of the ACC Women's Asia Cup, organized by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
  • It was the third edition played as a 20-over tournament.
  • The tournament was contested between Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

International Affairs 

Trump meets Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong

  • S President Donald Trump met Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong ahead of historic 'Trump-Kim summit'(12th Jun).
  • They were expected to discuss everything from the summit preparations to the US' tariff threats.
  • The US president was accompanied by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Adviser John Bolton, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.
  • Lee also hosted a working lunch for Trump and his delegation.

National Affairs 

India to soon start producing first indigenous Lithium-Ion batteries

  • According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, India will start producing first indigenous Lithium Ion batteries.
  • A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for transfer of technology for India’s first Lithium Ion (Li-ion) Battery project was signed between CSIR’s Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI), Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu and RAASI Solar Power Pvt Ltd.
  • At present India depends on countries like China, Japan and South Korea for import of Lithium-Ion batteries.
  • India imported Li-Ion batteries worth 150 million dollars in 2017 and is one of its largest importers in the world.

Met Dept to use flash flood guidance system for the first time to forecast floods

  •  India Meteorological Department (IMD) will use flash flood guidance system for the first time in the country to forecast floods.
  • Currently, the Central Water Commission issues flood warnings.
  • The national weather agency is preparing to launch this service from the next month.
  • Different kinds of soil from various parts of the country have been studied to find out how absorbent each variety was.

India is the second highest sender of foreign students in the US

  • According to the US consul general Craig Hall, India is the second highest sender (1st - China) of foreign students in the US.
  • The United States is the top destination for foreign students worldwide and the number of Indian students in the US has more than doubled in the last 10 years.
  • Currently, around one lakh eighty-six thousand students are studying in various institutions and Universities in the United States.
  • This rise in the number of Indian students studying in the United State brings great hope to prosper together.
  • According to the Open Doors Reports of 2017, Indians comprised approximately 17% of the total number of international students and over the past five years.

Northern Railways to monitor the cleanliness of its trains using WhatsApp

  • According to the Northern Railway General Manager Vishwesh Chaube, Northern Railways will monitor the cleanliness of its trains using WhatsApp groups supervised by senior officials.
  • Every department will have separate WhatsApp groups, in which status report of cleanliness will be uploaded on daily basis.
  • There is a target of installing CCTVs in 340 coaches - 265 in Delhi and 75 in Ferozpur divisions for online monitoring of cleanliness and safety.

V K Singh flags off 1st batch of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

  •  The Union Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh has flagged off the first batch of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra -2018 in New Delhi.
  • The Yatra is organized by the External Affairs Ministry every year between June and September.
  • There are two routes for Yatra-through Lipulekh pass(Uttarakhand) and through Natu La pass(Sikkim).
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra:
  • Devotees of Lord Shiva visit the snow-clad peaks in the Himalayas to pay him a visit and seek his blessings.
  • It is open to eligible Indian citizens, holding valid Indian passports, who wish to proceed to Kailash-Manasarovar for religious purposes.
