Mahesh Kumar Jain appointed as Dy Governor of RBI

  • The Union Government has appointed Mahesh Kumar Jain as new Deputy Governor at Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a term of three years.
  • The post of deputy governor fell empty after SS Mundra (retired in July 2017).
  • Presently, he is the Managing Director and CEO of IDBI Bank.
  • The deputy governor will draw a fixed salary of Rs 2.25 lakh per month plus allowances.
  • The existing three Deputy Governors of RBI are Shri B.P. Kanungo, Dr. Viral V. Acharya, and N S Vishwanathan.

Abdel Fattah al-Sisi sworn in as Egypt's president for the second time

  • Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was sworn for a second term in office as the country faces major economic and security challenges.
  • Mr. Sisi took the oath in front of members of his government, after winning 97% of valid votes in the March presidential election.
  • Sisi, who as army chief ousted Egypt's first freely elected president Mohamed Morsi after mass street protests in 2013.
  • He won his first term in 2014 with an overwhelming majority of the vote.

4th June: International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

  • The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is a United Nations (UN) observance each year on 4th June to protect the rights of children.
  • The day was established on 19th August 1982.
  • Its purpose expanded to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical, mental and emotional abuse.

3rd June: World Bicycle Day

  •  The first World Bicycle Day (WBD) is observed by United Nations (UN) on 3rd June 2018 to raise awareness about the multiple societal benefits of using the bicycle for transport and leisure.
  • The WBD was approved on 12th April 2018 as an official United Nations day of awareness about the multiple societal benefits of using the bicycle for transport and leisure.
  • Vice president M. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the Bicycle Rally and Smart Cycle Station for Public Bike Sharing in New Delhi.

India successfully test-fires nuclear capable long range Ballistic missile Agni-5

  • India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear capable Long Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-5’ from the Abdul Kalam Wheeler Island off the Odisha coast.
  • Agni-V is a solid fuelled intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India, strike range of 5,000 kilometers.
  • It can carry a nuclear warhead of more than one tonne.
  • The first missile of the Agni series (Agni-I) was developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program and tested in 1989.

Reserve Bank of India organizing Financial Literacy Week

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is organizing Financial Literacy Week from today till 8th of this month, across the nation.
  • This year the theme is Customer Protection.
  • The objective of the Financial Literacy Week is to create financial awareness among bank customers about financial products and services, good financial practices and digitization.
  • The bank is leaving no stone unturned to accelerate the level of outreach of the initiative.
  • For this, a pilot project for financial literacy in 80 blocks of 9 states has been devised, in which 6 NGOs have registered themselves in Depositor education and awareness fund.

National Affairs

2-day conference of Governors, Lt. Governors begins at Rashtrapati Bhawan

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has inaugurated the two days Conference of Governors and Lieutenant Governors (49th) at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
  • The conference will discuss important thematic issues in various sessions.
  • Governors will discuss ideas on how to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • During this session, presentations will be made by the Vice Chairman and the CEO of NITI Aayog as well as by the National Security Advisor (NSA).
  • The President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Home Minister and External Affairs Minister will address the concluding session.

Haryana govt to give paternity leave to all male govt employees

  • Haryana Government has decided to give 15-days paternity leave to all male government employees to take care of the new-born child.
  • The state government has also decided to raise the strength of women in police force from existing 11% to 20%.

NTPC adopts Charminar under Swachh Iconic Places Project

  • Indian Public-Sector Undertaking, National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) has adopted the iconic Charminar in Hyderabad under the Swachh Iconic Places Projects of India.
  • NTPC Ltd and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have signed a MoU for implementation of development and beautification works under 'Charminar Pedestrianization Project' in Hyderabad.

  • The Charminar (Four Minarets) is a monument and mosque located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India.
  • The Charminar is situated on the east bank of Musi river.
  • It is listed as an archaeological and architectural treasure on the official ‘List of Monuments’ prepared by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Andhra govt to give allowance to unemployed youth

  • Andhra Pradesh government has announced to give a monthly allowance of Rs. 1,000 each to unemployed graduate youth in the state (upper age limit of 35).
  • It will cover close to 10 lakh unemployed youth in the state.
  • The entire scheme has a budget outlay of Rs. 1200 crores.

Heli-Taxi services launched between Shimla & Chandigarh

  • Today, helicopter taxi service ‘Heli taxi service’ between Shimla and Chandigarh launched at Jubbarhatti airport in Shimla.
  • The service has been introduced by Pawan Hans Ltd in collaboration with Himachal Pradesh government.
  • The 20-seater chopper service will be operated by Pawan Hans helicopter and will be available on Mondays and Fridays.
  • Tourists can take 20 minutes joyride in the chopper and the introductory fare has been kept at Rs. 2999 (for one side).
