Nation Celebrates Vijay Diwas Today

  • Vijay Diwas is commemorated every 16th December in India, as it marks its military victory over Pakistan in 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
  • On December 16, 1971, Lieutenant General AAK Niazi (chief of Pakistani forces), along with 93 thousand troops, surrendered to the allied forces, comprising the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini.
  • Bangladesh is also celebrating its Victory Day.
  • This day is a special occasion for the Mukti Jodhdhas who recall their own heroic exploits and also that of their Indian comrades in arms like Albert Ekka during the nine-month-long Liberation War of Bangladesh.
  • The Surrender of Pakistan Armed Forces marked the end of the Bangladesh Liberation War and the creation of Bangla Desh.

Railway extends use of CCTV cameras for monitoring cleanliness

  • The Railways has extended the use of CCTV cameras for monitoring cleanliness activities at major railway stations.
  • The national transporter has also intensified the enforcement of the Railways (Penalties for activities affecting cleanliness at railway premises) Rules, 2012.
  • The regular intensive cleanliness drives are undertaken at various railway stations by Zonal Railways.
  • Use of CCTVs has been extended for monitoring of cleanliness activities at major stations.
  • Presently, over 340 major railway stations have been provided with CCTV cameras for round-the-clock surveillance by Railway Protection Force for the security of passengers.

Indo-Maldives joint military exercise in Karna

  • The two-week long Indo-Maldives joint military exercise, ‘Ekuverin’ has begun at Belagavi, Bengaluru.
  • The bilateral annual exercise is a joint military training between the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
  • The annual exercise held alternatively in India and Maldives since 2009.
  • 'Ekuverin' means 'friends' in the Maldivian language

R Hemalatha takes Charge as Director of National Institute of Nutrition

  • R Hemalatha has been appointed as the new Director of the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad.
  • Hemalatha has served as secretary of the Nutrition Society of India, is a fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a fellow of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences.
  • Hemalatha is a medical graduate of Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad.
Note: The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) is an Indian Public health, Biotechnology and Translational research center located in Hyderabad, India.

SBI starts state bank Rewardz Scheme

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) has introduced a loyalty program “State Bank Rewardz” for its valued customers.
  • The program gives the SBI customers several opportunities to earn reward points and earn many times faster at Max Get More partner outlets.
  • These reward points can be redeemed for full or partial payments to get products and services online as well as from Max Get More partner outlets.

RBI imposes Rs 3 crore penalty on IndusInd Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to impose Rs 3 crore penalty on IndusInd Bank for breaching rules on income classification norms.
  • The penalty was imposed for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on Income Recognition and Asset Classification (IRAC) norms and contravention of regulatory restrictions pertaining to non-fund based (NFB) facilities.
  • IndusInd Bank Limited is a Mumbai based Indian new generation bank, established in 1994 & offers commercial, transactional, electronic banking products and services.

J&K bank launches ‘Sahafat Finance Scheme’

  • Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) bank’s chairman & CEO Parvez Ahmad has launched a special financial scheme "J&K Bank Sahafat Finance Scheme" for journalists of the state.
  • It will enable journalists to buy cameras, laptops, tablets, and books.
  • The minimum loan amount for the purpose has been fixed at Rs 50,000 while as the maximum cap is Rs 3 lacks.

Bengali poet ‘Joy Goswami’ to get Moortidevi Award 2017

  • Renowned Bengali poet Joy Goswami will be given the Moortidevi Award for the year 2017 for his poetry collection titled ‘Du Dondo Phowara Matro’.
  • ‘Du Dondo Phowara Matro’ is an autobiographical account of the poet’s life featuring his close ones including a pet cat.
  • The Moortidevi award consists of a Saraswati Statue, a Citation Plaque and cash award of Rupees 4 lacks.
  • The Moortidevi Award is an India literary award annually presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith.

Roger Federer named BBC overseas sports personality of the year

  • Swiss tennis player Roger Federer (36-years) has been voted BBC overseas sports personality of the year for a record fourth time.
  • Earlier, Federer won the award in 2004, 2006 and 2007.
  • Muhammad Ali and Usain Bolt have each won it three times.
  • Federer will be honored during Sunday's BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony in Liverpool.
  • Federer became the first man to win Wimbledon eight times and extended his record to 19 Grand Slam titles in 2017.

Official emblems for Beijing 2022 Winter Games unveiled

  • The emblem launching ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Olympic was held at the National Aquatic Center and a series of performances were staged with a theme of Winter Olympic Dream.
  • The emblems of the Beijing 2022 Olympic "Winter Dream” and Paralympic Winter Games "Flight” have been named.
  • The chief designer of the two emblems is Lin Cunzhen, deputy dean of China Central Academy of Fine Arts' Design School.

FIFA bans head of Brazilian football federation

  • FIFA ethics committee has suspended the head of the Brazilian football federation Marco Polo Del Nero (76-years) for 90 days over a breach of its rules.
  • Del Nero was accused of accepting a 6.5 million Euro commission.
  • The decision bans Del Nero from any football-related activities during this period.
