Essay on Corruption for IBPS PO Mains 2017
The word “corruption” means the destruction, ruining or the spoiling of a society or a nation. A corrupt society stops valuing integrity, virtue or moral principles. Corruption has not become so rampant and perpetuated overnight, but in the course of time. It is witnessed all over the world, in developing as well as developed countries. When we talk of corruption in public life, it covers corruption in politics, state government, central government, business and so on. Thus corruption has spread its tentacles in every sphere of life.
Corruption in any form is treated as an incurable disease, a cause of many social and economic evils in the society. It damages the moral and ethical fibres of the civilisation. Selfishness and greed are the two main causes of corruption. Political corruption is the abuse of powers by state officials for their private gains. Corruption even leads to criminal activities such as money laundering, extortion and drug trafficking.
The mighty Roman Empire disintegrated when its rulers became corrupt and selfish. Nations having a tyrannical powerful ruling elite that refuses to punish the corrupt within it, face the menace of corruption. To root out the evil of corruption from society, we need to make a comprehensive code of conduct for politicians, legislatures and bureaucrats. The judiciary should be given more independence and initiatives on issues related to corruption.
Thus, corruption, in the long run, may destroy the whole society morally, ethically and economically. Though it seems difficult to control corruption, it is not impossible. It is not only the responsibility of the government but ours too. We can eliminate corruption if there is a joint effort. We must have some high principles to follow so that we may be models for the coming generation. Let us take a vow to create an atmosphere free from corruption. That will be our greatest achievement as human beings.
