Essay on Women Empowerment for IBPS PO Mains 2017

The word “empowerment” is now increasingly seen as a process by which the ones without power gain greater control over their lives. This means control over material assets, intellectual resources and ideology. With reference to women, the power relation that has to be involved includes their lives at multiple levels, family, community, market and the state. Most importantly, it involves, at the psychological level, women’s ability to assert themselves.

The empowerment of women has become one of the most important concerns not only at national level but also at the international level. It is the woman who creates the world, she who preserves and destroys. With a wink of her wonder eyes, she holds the universe in her womb. Women bear almost all the responsibilities for meeting the basic needs of the family, yet are denied the resources, information and freedom of action they need to fulfill these responsibilities.

Education is a powerful tool of social transformation. Hence, education for women has to be paid special attention. There should be greater access for women to education system. Gender sensitivity must be developed. The government has to be vigilant for ensuring that there is no discrimination against the girl child and that her rights are protected.

Apart from the policies and plans of the government to eradicate gender discrimination, society must also take initiatives to create a climate in which women have full opportunities of self-decision making and participating in the social, political and economic life of the country with a sense of equality. Then only the popular saying, “wherever woman is respected, God resides there,” would come true.
