Najma Heptulla appointed new Jamia Chancellor

  • Former minority affairs minister and Incumbent Manipur governor 'Najma Heptulla' (77-year) has been appointed the first woman chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia university for a term of five years.
  • She will succeed Lieutenant General (Retd.) MA Zaki.
  • Heptulla is a five-time member of the Rajya Sabha and served as the Deputy Chairman of the House for sixteen years.

Note: Earlier, Heptulla served as the minister of minority affairs in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet before being appointed as the governor of Manipur.

Satyabrata Rout gets Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar

  • Professor Satyabrata Rout (University of Hyderabad) has been awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar for the year 2016.
  • Rout has been awarded for developing a unique method of teaching, practicing direction and design achieved from his experience working with eminent theatre practitioners and scholars
  • He is one of the pioneers of ‘visual theatre’ in India.
  • The Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Award) is an award given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s National Academy of Music, Dance, theatre and other traditional arts and puppetry.

Note: 
  • The Sangeet Natak Akademi is an Autonomous Body under the Ministry of Culture.
  • The award includes a purse of Rs 50000, besides a Tamrapatra, and Angavastram.

Vadodara creates Guiness world record for most people sweeping

  • Vadodara (Gujarat) made a new Guinness world record for the maximum number of people sweeping a single venue.
  • Around 5,058 residents of Vadodara along with the Municipal Corporation came together to sweep the bridge that connects Akota with Dandia Bazaar over a one-kilometre stretch.
  • The large-scale event saw about 50,000 people in attendance as they cheered and rendered their support to the participants.
  • This programme was organised for celebrating the city's inclusion in ten cleanest cities.


President of India presents Hindi Sevi Samman

  • Today, President Pranab Mukherjee has presented the ‘Hindi Sevi Samman for 2015’ to 26 eminent Hindi scholars at a function held in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
  • The scholars received awards in 12 different categories for their contribution in the field of Hindi language and literature.

Note: The awards instituted by Central Hindi Institute, Agra in 1989 carry a cash prize of five lakh rupees and citation.

First women's TV channel launched in Afghanistan

  • Zan TV (Women's TV) has been launched with staff of all female presenters and producers, following a high-profile marketing campaign on billboards in Afghanistan.
  • It is being seen a ground- breaking step for women's rights, in a male dominated country.
  • The station is run on a shoestring budget using low-cost digital technology in a basic studio in the Kabul, Afghanistan.


PM Modi participates in Indo-German inter-governmental consultations

  • The Prime Minister Narendra Modi & Chancellor of Germany ‘Angela Merkel’ have attended the 4th Indo-German consultations at Berlin, Germany.
  • They will also hold ministerial level talks on various sectors at the consultations.
  • The two leaders observed the possibilities of including the Issues of climate change in the G-20 context.
  • Earlier, Mr. Modi was given a ceremonial welcome at the official residence of Chancellor Angela Merkel (Chancellory).


Former Greek Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis passes away

  • Former Prime Minister of Greek ‘Constantine Mitsotakis’ (98-year) passed away.
  • He was an early proponent of austerity cuts that Greece eventually had to adopt during the economic crisis of 2010.
  • Mitsotakis served as the Prime Minister of Greece from 1990 to 1993.


Govt. launches new campaign called ‘Darwaza Band’

  • Today, the union minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation ‘Narendra Singh Tomar’ and Maharashtra Chief Minister ‘Devendra Fadnavis’ jointly launched a new campaign ‘Darwaza Band’ in Mumbai for promotion of toilet usage in the rural areas across the country.
  • Bollywood star ‘Amitabh Bachchan’ will lead the campaign.
  • ‘Anushka Sharma’ will be seen encouraging women to stand up for this issue in their villages and assume a leadership role.
  • The campaign is designed to encourage behaviour change in men who have toilets but are not using them.


Anti-Ragging Mobile App Launched

  • The Union Human Resource Development Minister ‘Prakash Javadekar’ has launched an 'Anti-Ragging Mobile App' introduced by the UGC (University Grants Commission) in New Delhi.
  • The mobile app will help students register complaints against the menace of ragging in the country.
  • The complaint will be sent to the concerned authorities for timely action.
  • Earlier, students had to visit the website to register a complaint against ragging.


40 crore workers from unorganised sector to be covered under social

  • According to the union Labour Minister ‘Bandaru Dattatreya’, around 40 crores workers from unorganised sector will be covered under social security schemes, Employees State Insurance, and Employees Provident Fund.
  • The ministry is implementing reforms and new ways and means for employment generation.
  • The Ministry is implementing the National Career Service project as a vibrant platform for transforming and strengthening the public employment services in the country.
  • The ESIC (Employees' State Insurance Corporation) is now covering complete districts instead of targeted industrial clusters.
  • Now, Coverage expanded to all 393 districts where these clusters are located and in the second phase the target is to cover all the remaining districts of the country.
