First, let’s discuss the
Exam Pattern of SSC CHSL Exam 2016-17
The questions in written test will be objective type. There will be 100 questions in the exam paper and candidates will be given 75 minute to solve the question paper. There will be following 4 sections in the question paper –
- Now SSC CHSL also will be conducted Tier -I through Online Mode.
- Reduce the time limit for examination of Tier -I from 120 minutes to 75 minutes.
- Reduce the Number of questions of Tier -I from 200 to 100.
- Each part is of equal importance so candidates have to focus on each & every part of this exam.
- It should be noted by candidates is that there is Negative Marking of 0.50 Marks in this Exam. So plan for exam is according to the pattern & syllabus of SSC CHSL Exam.
- Remember that There is no Section wise Cut Off in this Exam.

How to Prepare English for SSC CHSL Exam 2016-17
English Section is one section that gets mixed responses from candidates depending upon their educational background and preparation level. For some, this is an easy task but for others, this section becomes a nightmare and biggest hurdle in getting a good score in the exam.
I would like to say that English section is tough for those who have passed their Intermediate in Hindi Medium, but guys even I am from the same, but your Firm Decision can change things.
English is not something you can expect to master in a day. But from an exam point of view, if you spend time consistently, you can perform well in it in relatively less time as compared to Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning sections. This section acquires more importance because it is the only section which can be attempted quickly i.e. in 10-15 minutes and at the same time, decent marks can be scored in this section if prepared well. The number of questions from each topic and their difficulty level has remained similar over the years. As you know this subject contains 25 questions according to New Exam Pattern.

1. Spotting Error
You have to find the grammatical error in the sentence. This type of questions require good grammatical sense.
Tips to solve Spotting Error in SSC CHSL LDC/ DEO Exam
- In order to solve questions on spotting errors the first step you should take is to read the complete sentence carefully. In most of the cases, you will be able to detect the error in the first go itself.
- While reading the entire sentence, you must carefully check the subject-verb agreement.
- If you can still not detect the error or you are still unsure of the correct answer, then you must read each individual part of the sentence and closely examine which part consists of an error.
2. Fill in the blanks
In SSC CHSL Exam it is expected that there will be questions with only single fill in the blank.
Tips to solve Fill in the Blank Question in SSC CHSL LDC/Postal Assistant Exam
- Read the statement carefully and choose the word from the options which is suitable for the answer.
- Use the method of elimination by simultaneously checking which of the options best satisfies both the entries.
- Also you must ensure that the word you have inserted in the blank enables to read the sentence smoothly and correctly. These methods can only be applied by Practicing.
3. Synonyms and Antonyms:
- Learn at least 10 new English words daily. Note down the Meaning and example of each word you find unfamiliar or difficult to remember. This is the best way to cover Synonyms and Antonyms.

- Must study all the Synonyms and Antonyms from previous paper as you know that SSC usually repeats a lot of questions.
4. Idioms/Phrases & One Word Substitution
- Sum up all the one word substitutions and Idioms and phrases from the previous year books and learn them to score good in English section in the SSC CHSL Exam 2016.

5. Spelling Mistakes

6. Sentence Correction
In this topic you have to find the correct alternatives which may improve the sentence. Sometimes there is no correction required then your answer will be no improvement.

- As you locate each error, eliminate all of the choices that contain that error
- Do not read each answer choice back into the sentence individually; that wastes time and invites inaccuracy.
- Instead, identify the differences among the choices and eliminate those that offer less effective or grammatically incorrect alternatives.
7. Cloze Test
A passage with 5 blanks is expected to come in SSC CHSL Exam. In this test you are provided with a passage with few blanks and you need to fill these blanks from the given options.

- In a passage mostly all the sentences are logically related to each other. This logic will give you an idea about the appropriate word for the blank space.
- Sometimes you can easily spot the correct answer. If not, then eliminate the improbable options one by one and get the right answer.
- Find a logical relation between all the provided options.
8. Reading Comprehension
- Step I: Identify the tone of paragraph, it helps in answering questions very quickly
- Step II: Read questions first so that you know what you are looking for
- Step III: Read first and last para twice and thoroughly
