The Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, 2013 provided for the establishment of Lokpal for the Union and Lokayukta for States (statutory bodies).

They perform the function of an "ombudsman” and inquire into allegations of corruption against certain public functionaries such as Ministers, legislators, etc. who are covered by the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The appointment is made by the Governor on recommendation of a selection panel of CM, High Court Chief Justice, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the Chairman of the Legislative Council, Leaders of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council

Once appointed, Lokayukta cannot be dismissed nor transferred by the government, and can only be removed by passing an impeachment motion by the state assembly.
