Hilsa is a species of fish related to the herring, in the family Clupeidae. It is a very popular and sought-after food fish in the Indian Subcontinent, and is the national fish of Bangladesh and the state fish of West Bengal.

Hilsa is found in River Padma in Bangladesh.

It is an anadromous fish, means fish born in freshwater, and lives most of its life in saltwater and return to freshwater to spawn.

Bangladesh approved export of hilsa to India ahead of the Durga Puja festival.

It is also known by the name Ilish, and is found in the Padma river of Bangladesh.

River Padma is a main channel of the greater Ganges River.

Farakka Barrage of West Bengal on Ganga river aims to divert adequate quantity of Ganga waters to Bhagirathi-Hoogly river system and maintenance of Kolkata Port by improving the regime and navigability of the Bhagirathi-Hoogly river system. Farakka Barrage prevents the movement of hilsa to the Ganges in India.

NDCs are submitted every five years to the UNFCCC secretariat.
