1. 39th India International Trade Fair begins in New Delhi

  • Today, the 39th edition of India International Trade Fair (IITF-2019) has been inaugurated by the union minister Nitin Gadkari at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
  • The theme for the 39th edition of the fair is ‘Ease of Doing Business’ inspired by India’s unique achievement of rising to 63rd rank on the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Index from 142nd rank in the year 2014.
  • Several countries, including Australia, Iran, UK, and Vietnam will participate in the 14-day IITF-2019.
  • This year the status of ‘Partner Country’ has been accorded to ‘The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’ and ‘The Republic of Korea’ will be the ‘Focus Country’.
  • Bihar and Jharkhand will be the focus states in this edition of the fair.
  • The 2019 IITF has been organized by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), under the aegis of Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Know about Tickets:
  • Entry tickets for business days (14-18, Nov.) will be available for Rs 500 per person and a season ticket for Rs 1,800.
  • For all visitors during public days (19-27 November), ticket charges will be Rs 60 (adult) and Rs 40 (child) on working days and on Saturday/Sunday/public holiday the tickets will be Rs 120 (adult) and Rs 60 (child).

2. Rajnath Singh attends Maitree Diwas celebrations in Arunachal PradesH

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited Arunachal Pradesh to attend the Maitree Diwas celebrations (11th edition) at Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Maitree Diwas (Civil-Military Friendship) will be celebrated for two days at Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Stadium Tawang.
  • Mr. Rajnath Singh will also inaugurate Sisseri River Bridge and National Highway-52 in East Siang District.

3. Children's Day: 14th November

  • Children’s Day is celebrated on 14th November every year on the birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru also called 'Chacha Nehru'.
  • Children's Day is celebrated across India to increase awareness of the rights, care, and education of children.
  • Political leaders and eminent persons have paid tribute to him at his Samadhi, Shanti Vana in New Delhi.
Note:
  • Children's Day (Bal Divas) was first celebrated in 1964 after the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

4. World Diabetes Day being observed today

  • Today, the world Diabetes Day being observed marks the birthday of the man who co-discovered insulin, Frederick Banting.
  • The theme for World Diabetes Day 2018 and 2019 is ‘The Family and Diabetes’.
  • The Day is raising awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the family and support network of those affected and promoting the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes
  • Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar either because of the inability of the body to produce enough insulin or the inability to respond to the insulin so produced.
  • Insulin is a critically important medication for individuals with Type 1 diabetes.

  • In 2007, General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/61/225 designating 14 November as World Diabetes Day.

5. India to host 19th SCO Heads of Government Council in 2020

  • India will host the 19th council of heads of government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) next year.
  • It is the first such high-level meeting of the eight-member grouping to be organised by New Delhi after its admission into the grouping in 2017.
  • The SCO is a China-led eight-member economic and security bloc in which India and Pakistan were admitted as full members in 2017.
  • Its founding members included China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

6. Haryana sets up the Economic Advisory Council to promote industries

  • Haryana government has constituted an Economic Advisory Council (EAC) for five years to promote industries in the state.
  • The Economic Advisory Council will comprise membership-based advisory panel and will be headed by the Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar
  • This council would be constituted for 5 years, in which the government members would remain as permanent members of the council, while the members of the private sector would serve a term of 2 years.

7. UP govt launches e-Ganna app, web portal

  • Uttar Pradesh government has launched a dedicated web portal and a mobile application, e-Ganna App, for sugarcane farmers of the state.
  • Now, Cane supply slip will be issued to the farmers by sugar mills online.
  • The web portal and e-Ganna App will help in eradicating cane mafia and middleman and strengthen cane development societies.
  • The portal and the App will ensure transparency in the process of getting slips and facilitate sugarcane supply by farmers to mills and check irregularities.

8. Odisha: 'Bali Yatra' festival begins in Cuttack

  • The festival 'Bali Yatra' was inaugurated in Cuttack, Odisha.
  • The festival is organised every year in memory of the rich maritime history of the state.
  • The festival is organised at the bank of Mahanadi River every year to mark the day when ancient mariners from the state would set sail to the distant land of Bali, Sumatra, Java (Jawa) in Indonesia, Borneo and Sri Lanka, for the expansion of trade and Culture.
  • For the first time, the festival has a maritime corner to exhibit the model of the maritime voyage of ancient sea traders, who were travelling to the different parts of South-East Asia for Trade and culture extension.

9. Sishu Suraksha APP launched in Assam

  • The Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has launched a mobile app Sishu Suraksha App.
  • The purpose of the app is to empower citizens to take moral responsibility for protecting future generations.
  • The app can be used by anyone in the state to lodge a complaint which will be directly registered at Commission.

10. ITDC appoints Kamala Vardhana Rao as its new Chairman and MD

  • India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) has appointed G Kamala Vardhana Rao (IAS officer 1990 batch from Kerala Cadre) as the new Chairman and Managing Director.
  • Prior to this, Mr. G Kamala Vardhana Rao was the Principal Secretary, Kerala government.
  • He has also served as the Secretary of Kerala Tourism in 2014-15.

  • The India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) is a hospitality, retail and education company owned by Government of India, under the Ministry of Tourism (Established in 1966).
  • It owns over 17 properties under the Ashok Group of Hotels brand, across India.

11. Unilever appoints Nils Andersen as new Chairman

  • Unilever named non-executive director Nils Andersen as its new chairman to utilise his deep experience across consumer goods and logistics industries.
  • Nil Andersen will replace Marijn Dekkers.
  • Unilever is Europe’s seventh most valuable company.

  • Unilever is a British-Dutch transnational consumer goods company co-headquartered in London, United Kingdom, and Rotterdam, Netherlands.
  • Its products include food and beverages, cleaning agents, beauty products, and personal care products.

12. Air Chief RKS Bhadauria inaugurates ISAM Conference in Bengaluru

  • Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria has inaugurated the 58th Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine (ISAM) Annual Conference at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine, Indian Air Force, Bengaluru (from 14-16 November)
  • The objective of the conference to address contemporary issues and applications in the subject of aerospace medicine.
  • The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Changing Paradigms in Aerospace Healthcare’.

13. Retail inflation jumps to 4.62 per cent in Oct on higher food prices

  • According to government data released, Retail inflation surged to 4.62% in October this year mainly on account of higher food prices.
  • The inflation in the food basket spiked to 7.89 per cent in October this year as against 5.11 per cent the preceding month.
  • The inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 3.99 per cent in September and 3.38 per cent in October last year.
  • The Reserve Bank mainly factors in the CPI-based inflation to arrive at its bi-monthly monetary policy.
  • The RBI has been asked to keep the retail inflation at around four per cent

14. Dr Debabhuson Borah gets Munin Barkotoki Literary Award

  • The prestigious Munin Barkotoki Literary Award 2018 in Assam has been given to young writer-critic Dr Debabhuson Borah for his book on literary criticism titled 'Nirbochon'.
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs 50,000 along with with a citation and a plaque.
  • The Munin Barkotoki Memorial Trust announced the annual Award instituted to encourage young and promising writers in Assamese.
Note:
  • The award was named after the renowned writer, critic and journalist Munin Barkotoki.
