1. England lift ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

  • England lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy 2019 at the Lord’s cricket stadium in London.
  • England beat New Zealand in a nerve-wracking final that was decided via a dramatic Super Over.
  • Batting first after winning the toss, New Zealand put up a modest 241 for eight in 50-overs.
  • In reply, England ended at the same score leading to the one-over eliminator at the Lord's.
  • In the Super Over, England batted first and the duo of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler made 15, and New Zealand also ended at the same score but for the loss of one wicket, paving the way for an English victory on boundary count. 
  • Player of the Match Award: Ben Stokes (England).

  • The ICC Cricket World Cup (12th edition) is the international championship of One Day International (ODI) cricket organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) every 4 years.
  • The ICC Cricket World Cup (13th edition) will be held in India from 9th February to 26th March 2023.

2. Djokovic beats Federer to win 2019 Wimbledon title

  • Serbian Novak Djokovic has won 2019 Wimbledon title after defeating Swiss tennis ace Roger Federer 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 4-6, 13-12 in the final match.
  • The match had to be decided in the fifth set, as both Federer and Djokovic won two sets each in the longest ever final to be played so far.
  • This is Djokovic's 16th Grand Slam and 5th Wimbledon title.
  • Simona Halep (Romania) has won 2019 Wimbledon women’s title after defeating Serena Williams 6-2 6-2 in the final match.

3. Lewis Hamilton wins sixth British Grand Prix

  • ‏British racing driver Lewis Hamilton (34-years) made a thrilling victory in the Silverstone circuit to win his sixth British Grand Prix.
  • Hamilton's Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas looked all set for victory, but a safety car intervention helped Hamilton to seal the victory.
  • Bottas had an early lead from pole position and he fought off Hamilton's challenge in the starting laps.
  • Hamilton somehow managed to edge ahead in the race later and from there he controlled the race.

  • The 2019 British Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone, United Kingdom.
  • The race was the tenth round of the 2019 Formula One World Championship.

4. India wins three gold medals in Yasar Dogu Ranking series

  • India has secured three Gold Medals in the Yasar Dogu Ranking series wrestling tournament being held in Turkey.
  • Rahul Awaare (in 61 Kg), Seema Bisla( in 50 Kg) and Manju Kumari (in 59 Kg) categories clinched the yellow metal.
  • Utkarsh Kale secured a Bronze in 61 Kg category.
  • Commonwealth and Asian Gold medal winner Vinesh Fogat in 53 kg category and Dipak in 86 kg competition have stormed into the finals.
  • Sumit, Vicky and Sonba Tanaji will compete for the bronze medal.

5. Pardeep Singh creates new Commonwealth record in the clean & jerk category

  • Pardeep Singh has created a new Commonwealth record in the clean and jerk category on the way to a gold medal as Indian weightlifters continued their impressive run on the Commonwealth Championships in Apia (Samoa).
  • Pardeep smashed the record in the clean and jerk event by lifting 202 kg.
  •  His earlier successful attempt of 148 kg took his total to 350 kg.
  • Two-time Commonwealth Games medallist Vikas Thakur clinched the silver medal in the men's 96 kg event, lifted a total of 338 kg (153kg&185kg).
  • India ended their campaign with a rich tally of 35 medals in the youth, junior and senior categories, breaking numerous national, Commonwealth, world and Asian records.

6. Vinesh Phogat wins gold at Yasar Dogu International

  • India's top wrestler Vinesh Phogat (24 years) has won gold in the 53kg category at Yasar Dogu International in Istanbul. 
  • Phogat beat her Russian opponent Ekaterina Poleshchuk 9-5 in the final match to bag the gold medal.
  • It was third gold in the women's competition for India after Seema (50kg) and Manju (59kg) triumphed in their respective categories.

8. Navjot Singh Sidhu resigns as Punjab Cabinet Minister

  • Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu (56-years) has resigned from Punjab Cabinet.
  • According to Navjot Singh Sidhu, he sent his resignation to Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi on 10th June and would send it to Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh also.
  • Mr Sidhu had been sulking after being stripped of key portfolios in the Punjab cabinet reshuffle in June.
  • On 6th June 2019, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had divested Sidhu of the Local Government and Tourism and Cultural Affairs Departments and allotted him the power and new and renewable energy portfolio.

9. Goa cabinet reshuffled; four BJP ministers inducted

  • The Goa cabinet was reshuffled with the induction of four BJP ministers Michael Lobo, Chandrakant Kavlekar, Jennifer Monserratte and Philip Nery Rodrigues.
  • Governor Mridula Sinha administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers at Raj Bhavan, Dona Paula near Panaji.
  • Earlier today, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant dropped ministers Vijai Sardesai, Vinod Palyenkar, Jayesh Salgaonkar and Rohan Khaunte before inducting four new BJP ministers.
  • Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative assembly Michael Lobo resigned before taking oath as a minister.
  • On Wednesday, 10 of the total 15 Congress MLAs in the Goa legislative assembly had split to merge with the BJP.

  • The 40-member Goa assembly currently has 27 BJP legislators, five Congress MLAs, three each from Goa Forward Party and independents, and one each from Nationalist Congress Party and Maharasthrawadi Gomantak Party.

10. Chandrayaan-2 launch called off due to technical snag: ISRO

  • Today, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has called off the launch of India's second mission to Moon ‘Chandrayaan-2’ onboard GSLV MkIII-M1 due to a technical snag.
  • The countdown for the launch scheduled for 2.51 AM was stopped 56 minutes and 24 seconds before lift-off following the announcement from the Mission Control Centre.
  • ISRO Associate Director (Public Relations), BR Guruprasad, revised launch date will be announced later.
  • The lift-off of the three-component spacecraft comprising an orbiter, the lander and the rover was scheduled from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
Note:
  • The Chandrayaan-2 was supposed to explore the uncharted lunar south pole, 11 years after ISRO's successful first lunar mission - Chandrayaan-1.
  • Chandrayaan-2 onboard the heavy-lift rocket Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle GSLV-MkIII-M1 (nicknamed Baahubali) would have taken 54 days to accomplish the task of landing on the Moon.
  • Chandrayaan-2 would make India the fourth country to soft-land a rover on the lunar surface after Russia, the US and China.

11. Meghalaya becomes 1st state to ensure water conservation

  • Meghalaya became the first state in India to ensure the conservation of water and have own water policy following a nod given by the State Cabinet.
  • The draft policy was approved by the State Cabinet in a meeting chaired by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
  • The objective of the policy is to recognize water resources as a common pool resource, to provide safe and hygienic water for drinking, domestic and sanitation and livelihood development to all residents of the state.
  • Among other things, the draft State Water Policy which seeks to protect and improve management of water resources while actively involving the community.
  • It also aims at ensuring the protection and conservation of catchment areas of all water sources to prevent degradation of the quantity and quality of water sources.

12. Film Divisions to launch documentary film club in Mumbai

  • India Film Divisions will launch a documentary film club ‘KSHITIJ’ in Mumbai. 
  • An acclaimed documentary film “Secret Life of Frogs” by Ajay and Vijay Bedi will be screened as the inaugural film.
  • Public screenings will begin at 5:30 PM on the second and fourth Friday of every month.
  • The screenings will be held at Films Division Complex.
  • The initiative, being launched in association with Indian Documentary Producer’s Association, will give movie lovers, an opportunity to watch acclaimed documentary films and also to interact with the film’s director.

13. The fourth anniversary of Skill India Mission being observed today

  • Today, the fourth anniversary of the Skill India Mission is being observed.
  • Home Minister Amit Shah has delivered the keynote address in New Delhi.
  • National Skill Development Mission also known as Skill India Mission was launched on this day in 2015.
  • Nearly One Crore youth are being presently imparted skills training annually under the mission.
  • The mission also envisages convergence, coordination and harmonization of the fragmented skilling efforts of various Ministries in Government of India and other key stakeholders through the instruments of Common norms, implementation of National Skills Qualification Framework and data integrations through the Skill India Portal.

14. Retail inflation increases marginally to 3.18 pc in June

  • As per the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation data, Retail inflation increased marginally to 3.18% in June this year over the previous month, mainly due to the rise in food prices.
  • The retail inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 3.05 per cent (in May) and 4.92 per cent (in June) last year.
  • As per the CPI data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the food inflation was 2.17% in June this year, up from 1.83 per cent in the preceding month.
  • Inflation in protein-rich food items, like egg, meat and fish, was higher in June compared to the previous month.
  • The Reserve Bank of India mainly factors in retail inflation while deciding the bi-monthly monetary policy.
Note:’
  • Inflation is a quantitative measure of the rate at which the average price level of a basket of selected goods and services in an economy increases over a period of time.
  • It is the constant rise in the general level of prices where a unit of currency buys less than it did in prior periods.
