1. Rahul Dravid appointed as head of National Cricket Academy

  • Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former cricketer Rahul Dravid as the head of National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru.
  • Dravid will be involved in mentoring, coaching, training and motivating players, coaches and the support staff at the academy.
  • Dravid will look after all cricket-related activities at the NCA and the head coach of India's under-19 & India A team.
Note:
  • National Cricket Academy (established in 2000) is a cricket facility of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for training young cricketers.
  • The National Cricket Academy located in Chinnaswamy Stadium Bengaluru, Karnataka in India.

2. Magnus Carlsen wins 2019 Croatia Grand Chess Tour title

  • Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen (28 years) defeated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France) to reach 8/11 and win the Croatia Grand Chess Tour.
  • The world champion Carlsen won his eighth straight tournament and earned USD 90,000.
  • He scored a 2943 performance and returned to his highest rating of 2882.
  • India’s Viswanathan Anand ended up with 4.5 points and finished 11th.
Note:
  • The 2019 Croatia Grand Chess Tour tournament is the second stop on the 2019 Grand Chess Tour.
  • The tournament is hosted in partnership between the Grand Chess Tour and Chess Club e4 from Zagreb.

3. India win 13 medals in Commonwealth Weightlifting C'ship

  • India won 13 medals (8 Gold, 3 silver and 2 Bronze) on the opening day of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Apia, Samoa.
  • Former world champion Mirabai Chanu led the Indian medal rush in the senior women's 49 kg event (lifted a total of 191 kg) to win the gold medal in the Olympic qualifying event.
  • Jhilli Dalabehra also clinched the first place on the podium with a lift of 154 kg in the senior women's 45 kg event which is not an Olympic weight category.
  • In the senior women's 55 kg, Soroikhaibam Bindyarani Devi won the gold while silver went to Matsa Santoshi.
  • In the senior men's 55kg category, Rishikanta Singh grabbed the gold with a total lift of 235 kg.

4. DRDO successfully tests armour-piercing Nag missiles at Pokhran range

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out three successful test firings of the Nag missiles in the Pokhran firing ranges in Rajasthan.
  • The ‘Nag missile’ is an Indian third generation "fire-and-forget" anti-tank guided missile.
  • The speed of this missile is 230 metres per second (range - 3 to 7 km).
  • Nag missile has top attack capabilities that can effectively engage and destroy all known enemy tanks during day and night.
Note:
  • The ‘Nag missile’ is being developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program and is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited.
  • The Defence Acquisition Council (in 2018) had approved the procurement of DRDO-designed-and-developed NAG Missile System (NAMIS) at a cost of Rs 524 crore.

5. Vice President releases a book titled ‘Vivekadeepini’ in ten languages

  • Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has released a book titled ‘Vivekadeepini’.
  • It is a book (in 10 languages) that contains facts and principles of spiritual leaders like Adi Shankaracharya and Swami Vivekananda.
  • The original book is written by Sri Adi Shankaracharya in Prashnottara Ratnamalika.
  • The conversion in different 10 languages has been done by Vedanta Bharati.

6. Former Goa minister Wilfred Mesquita passes away

  • Former Goa minister Wilfred Mesquita (70-years) passed away at a hospital in Mumbai after a brief illness.
  • Mr Mesquita was the founder vice president of the then ruling Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (youth wing) in 1974.
  • He served as the cabinet minister in late 1990s in the then Congress-led state government.
  • Mr Mesquita held various portfolios like revenue, environment, sports and youth affairs, power, law and judiciary and legislative affairs.
  • He was the leader of the Goa BJP since 2007 and served as the party’s vice president and spokesman.

7. Former India goalkeeper Celestine passed away

  • Former Indian football team goalkeeper A. U. Celestine (73-years) has passed away after a brief illness
  • Celestine played for the Tamil Nadu men’s team in the Senior Nationals as a goalkeeper (in 1965) and National Championships (in 1969).
  • He had represented India in the Merdeka Cup in Malaysia in 1969.

8. 2nd India-Russia Strategic Economic Dialogue begins in New Delhi

  • The second India-Russia Strategic Economic Dialogue has been started in New Delhi.
  • It will be held under the chairmanship of Rajiv Kumar (NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman) and TimurMaksimov (Deputy Minister of the Economic Development of Russia).
  • The first Dialogue was held in St. Petersburg on November 2018.
  • The meeting will focus on six core areas of cooperation, including the development of transport infrastructure and technologies, agriculture and agro-processing sector and small and medium business support.

9. Madhya Pradesh to produce its own seeds soon

  • In Madhya Pradesh, along with distribution and marketing of certified and high-quality seeds to farmers, the Madhya Pradesh State Cooperative Seed Federation will produce seeds too.
  • The decision has been taken in a Board of Directors’ meeting held under the chairmanship of the Minister for Cooperatives Govind Singh in Bhopal today.
  • The brand name of seeds will be ‘Sah-Beej’.
  • A plan has been made to produce seeds from the next Rabi season.
  • A large number of seed committees present in the state, which will be linked to the seed federation and these committees will help in the marketing of seeds.

10. NHAI signs MoU with NIIF for funding highway projects

  • National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed an MoU with the central government-promoted National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) to secure funding for large-sized projects, including highways.
  • The MoU is related to co-operation in the formation of SPVs to execute the fund arrangement for large size road projects particularly greenfield projects to be executed by NHAI in future.
  • NHAI is pursuing alternate sources of funding to attract international investors and fund houses that are willing to invest in road projects in India.
Note:
  • National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) is a fund promoted by the Government of India to give a boost to the infrastructure sector in the country.

11. Parliament adopts resolution levying 200% duty on Pakistani goods

  • Parliament (The Lok Sabha & Rajya Sabha) has adopted a statutory resolution for levying 200% duty on all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan.
  • Parliament approved the amendment in the first schedule of the Customs Tariff Act in this regard.
  • India had notified the basic customs duty to 200% on all goods exported from Pakistan with effect from 16th of February 2019.
Note:
  • Basic Customs Duty is the duty imposed on the value of the goods at a specific rate.
  • This duty has been imposed from 1962 and was amended from time to time and regulated by the Customs Tariff Act of 1975.
  • The Central Government has the power to reduce or exempt any good from these duties.

12. Sri Lanka: Annual festival at historic Kataragama temple attracts devotees

  • The annual festival at historic Kataragama temple attracts devotees from all faiths in Sri Lanka.
  • The fortnight-long festival began last week and is joined by people all over Sri Lanka and abroad.
  • The festival will end next week on full moon night with a water cutting ceremony,
  • Thousands of devotees travel for hundreds of kilometres on foot to attend the fortnight-long festival.
  • The place finds mention in Skanda Purana and is popular for centuries-old Hindu temple of Lord Kartika, known locally as Katargama Deviyo.
  • Kataragama (multi-religious city) contains a mosque within the temple complex and a Buddhist temple nearby, considered to be one of the 16 main places of Buddhist pilgrimage in Sri Lanka.

13. M Nageswar Rao appointed DG of Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guard

  • The Central Government has appointed M Nageswar Rao as the Director General (DG) of Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guard till 31st July 2020.
  • Earlier, he held the position of Additional Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
  • Lieutenant General Shailesh Sadashiv Tinaikar (34-years) takes Charge as Force Commander of the UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Juba.
  • Tinaikar has been felicitated with the Sena Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal for Distinguished Service.

14. Sunil Chhetri and Ashalata Devi wins AIFF Player of the Year

  • Indian captain Sunil Chhetri (34-years) has won the AIFF Men’s footballer of the year 2018-19 award.
  • Sunil Chhetri has already won Player of the Year award in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2017.
  • Currently, Chhetri plays for Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League (ISL).
  • India midfielder Abdul Samad was named the AIFF Emerging Men's Player of the Year.
  • Ace Indian Women’s footballer Ashalata Devi has won the Women’s footballer of the year award.
Note:
  • The AIFF Player of the Year is an annual association football award presented to the best footballer in India over the previous year (2018-19 season).
  • It has been awarded by All India Football Federation since 1992.

15. 'Gully Boy' wins NETPAC Award at BIFAN in South Korea

  • Indian movie 'Gully Boy' has been honoured with the NETPAC (The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Award for Best Asian Film at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (23rd) in South Korea.
  • The film features actors Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
  • The film 'Gully Boy' has been directed by Zoya Akhtar (released on 14th February 2019).
  • 'Gully Boy' is inspired by the lives of Mumbai street rappers Vivian Fernandes aka Divine and Naved Shaikh (aka Naezy).

  • BIFAN is an international film festival (founded in 1997) with attention to Asian cinema from East Asia and Southeast Asia.
  • NETPAC (created in 1990) is a pan-Asian film cultural organization of 29 member countries which involves critics, filmmakers, distributors and exhibitors, festival, organizers and curators, and film educators.
