1. BJP Led NDA set to form New govt at Center

  • The BJP has surpassed its previous record of 282 Lok Sabha seats in 2014, winning 302 constituencies and leading in one in the 543 member house.
  • Elections were held in 542 constituencies. All the results have come in except Arunachal West.
  • The election to Vellore parliamentary constituency was cancelled by the Election Commission on allegations of money power.
  • The Congress failed to make a mark and the party could hardly improve its tally of 44 in the previous Lok Sabha and secured 52 seats in 2019 elections.
  • The Congress even could not get the number of seats required for Leader of Opposition status in the Lok Sabha.
  • The BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi scripted history by becoming the second political party in Indian history to come back to power, even stronger this time.
BJP is able to retain power at the Centre for a second term with full majority
  • The BJP and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance are poised to clinch 350 seats as against their previous tally of 336. The UPA gets 90 seats.
  • The DMK gets third positions winning 23 seats followed by Trinamool Congress and YSR Congress 22 each. 
  • The Shiv Sena bagged 18 seats and  Janata Dal(United) 16.
  • Left parties CPI and CPI-M have been decimated and are left with only five seats -- three for the CPI-M and two for CPI. This is half of their tally of 10 in 2014 elections.
BJP wave continues in the state
  • While retaining its vote share in the Hindi Belt, the BJP successfully made inroads in West Bengal, Odisha and Telangana.
Uttar Pradesh 
  • In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP wave continues in the state.
  • The party has won 62 seats with a vote share of 49.56 per cent.
  • The Congress with only one seat could get only 6.31 per cent of the votes in the state - a drop from 7.53 per cent last general elections.
  • BSP which was no seat in the last Lok Sabha has got 10 seats this time, with its vote share of 19.26 per cent.
  • Its ally, Samajwadi Party repeated its performance winning 5 seats but its vote share has dropped to 17.96 per cent from 22.35 per cent in 2014.
  • Less than one per cent voters opted for NOTA in UP this election.
Gujarat
  • In Gujarat, the BJP has made a clean sweep and won all the 26 Lok Sabha seats repeating its performance of 2014.
  • The BJP got a vote share of over 62 per cent and the minimum margin of its victory was 1.27 lakh votes.
  • Congress failed to open its account in the state.
Madhya Pradesh
  • BJP has swept Madhya Pradesh also winning 28 seats while Congress could get only one in Chhindwada. 
Uttarakhand
  • In Uttarakhand, the BJP retained all 5 seats.
  • The BJP's vote share improved from 55.93 per cent votes in 2014 to 61.01 per cent in 2019.
  • Congress came in second position with 31.40 per cent.
Himachal Pradesh
  • The BJP has won all the 5 seats.
  • In Himachal Pradesh, all contestants other than winning and defeated rivals lost their security deposits from all the four constituencies of Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi and Shimla. 
Maharashtra
  • In Maharashtra,  Out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state, BJP gets 23  and its ally Shiv Sena 18.
  • NCP has bagged 4 seats while Congress and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen get one seat each. 
Rajasthan
  • In Rajasthan, the BJP retained 24 seats and ally RLTP won from Nagaur.
  • The BJP's vote share improved from 55.61 per cent votes in 2014 to 58.47 per cent in 2019.
  • The Congress polled only 34.24 per cent of the votes in the state.
Karnataka
  • In Karnataka, BJP secured a landmark victory winning 25 seats out of 28 seats.
  • The Congress, JDS and independent one each.
Odisha
  • BJD has bagged 12 seats followed by BJP 8 and Congress one.
West Bengal
  • In West Bengal, all the 42 results have come in.
  • Out of this Trinamool Congress has bagged 22, BJP 18, and Congress 2.
Bihar
  • In Bihar, Out of 40 seats, BJP has bagged 17 seats while its ally Janta Dal (United) gets 16 and Lok Janshakti Party got six.
  • Congress could manage only one.
Telangana
  • In Telangana, the result has been declared for all the 17 seats. TRS has won 9 seats. BJP has won 4 seats. Congress has won 3 seats.

Cabinet passes a resolution for dissolution of 16th Lok Sabha

  • Day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) recorded a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections, the present Cabinet and Union Council of Ministers met for the last time on Friday and passed a resolution for dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha.
  • The tenure for the present Lok Sabha ends on June 3.
  • Prime Minister Modi would now meet President Ram Nath Kovind who is the Head of the Parliament and hand over the resolution. 
  • The process to constitute 17th Lok Sabha would begin after the Election Commissioners meet President Kovind and hand over the list of newly elected members.

2. BJP wins all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi


  • In national capital Delhi, BJP has won all the seven Lok Sabha seats with overwhelming margins.
  • The BJP not only won all the seven seats, but it also recorded an increase in its vote share from 47 per cent in 2014 to more than 56.6 per cent this election.
  • The Congress' vote share in the Capital stands at 22.4 per cent and AAP's at 18.2 per cent.
  • The Lok Sabha election results for seven parliamentary seats of Delhi will serve as an indicator for the political parties before they draw up strategies for the Assembly elections due in February 2020.
List of winning candidates
  1. Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma from West Delhi won the seat with a record-breaking margin of 5 lakh 78 thousand 486 votes. Mr Verma not only broke his own record but also became the candidate who registered the highest victory margin in the city.
  2. Cricketer turned politician Gautam Gambhir won by a margin of 3 lakh 91 thousand 222 votes from East Delhi Lok Sabha seat.
  3. BJP's North East Delhi candidate Manoj Tiwari won by a margin of 3 lakh 66 thousand 102 votes.
  4. Meenakshi Lekhi won from New Delhi by a margin of 2 lakh 56 thousand 504 votes.
  5. The singer turned Politician Hans Raj Hans won from North West Delhi Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 5 lakh 53 thousand 897 votes.
  6. South Delhi candidate Ramesh Bidhuri won the Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 3 lakh 67 thousand 43 votes.
  7. Union Minister Dr Harshvardhan won with a margin of 2 lakh 28 thousand 145 votes from Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha seat.

3. Jagan Mohan Reddy to be sworn in as CM of AP on May 30


  • In Andhra Pradesh, YSR Congress Chief Jagan Mohan Reddy will be sworn in as chief minister of Andhra Pradesh on 30th of this month at Vijayawada.
  • Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced this following his party achieving inching towards a landslide victory in the legislative elections for Andhra Pradesh Legislative assembly held on April 11th.

4. NHA to collaborate with cancer grid


  • In the first such move to bring in uniform standards of patient care to battle cancer, the National Health Authority (NHA) and National Cancer Grid (NCG) have signed an MoU under the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
  • The NHA and NCG will now jointly review existing cancer treatment packages, pricing of services, and standard treatment workflows covered under the AB-PMJAY, and plug-in necessary gaps to ensure enhanced quality of cancer care.
  • Indu Bhushan is a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and the National Health Authority.
The main objective of this collaboration includes –
  • developing uniform standards of patient care for prevention,
  • diagnosis and treatment of cancer;
  • providing specialised training and education in oncology, and
  • facilitating collaborative basic, translational and clinical research in cancer,”.

5. ADB to provide USD 750 million loans to India for railway track electrification project


  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed an agreement to provide USD 750 million equivalent in Indian rupee long-term financing to electrify railway tracks in India.
  • It is the largest single non-sovereign loan ever committed by ADB to Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) to fund the railways track electrification project.
  • IRFC will use the proceeds from the loan to install electric traction equipment along about 3,378 kilometres of existing railway lines to enable migration of passenger and freight traffic from diesel to electric traction.

6. India to face New Zealand in the warm-up game of ICC World Cup tomorrow


  • In Cricket, India will take on New Zealand in their opening warm-up game of the ICC World Cup in London tomorrow. The match will begin at 3 pm (Indian Standard Time).
  • The Men in Blue, second behind England in the ODI rankings, will start the tournament among the favourites alongside the hosts and defending champions Australia.
  • Team India, which had won the tournament in 1983 and 2011, will begin their campaign in tournament proper against South Africa in Southampton on the 5th of next month.
  • The opening game will be played between England and South Africa in London on the 30th of this month.

7. Adani Ports to set up first container terminal outside India in Myanmar


  • Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone will set up its first container terminal outside India in Myanmar at an estimated cost of USD 290 million (over Rs 2,000 crore).
  • The company signed an agreement to develop and operate a container terminal at Yangon Port in Myanmar.
  • Construction for phase one of the project will commence next month and will be completed by June 2021.

8. India’s economy to grow 7.5% by 2020: OECD


  • According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Economic Outlook report, India's economic growth will regain strength and approach 7.5% by 2020 buoyed by rural consumption and subdued inflation.
  • “Gross domestic product (GDP) growth in India is projected to strengthen to close to 7.25% in FY19 and close to 7.5% in FY20,”.
  • The report suggested that an improved collection of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and a wider base of personal income tax will help reduce the high public debt-to-GDP ratio.

9. Bank credit to the infra sector grows 18.5% in FY19: RBI data


  • Bank credit to the infrastructure sector grew by 18.5 per cent to Rs 10.55 lakh crore as of 2018-19, the highest since 2012-13 fiscal, RBI data showed.
  • Outstanding bank credit to the sector was Rs 8.91 lakh crore as at March 2018.
  • In the fiscal year ended March 2013, loans to infrastructure sector had grown by 15.83 per cent to Rs 7.29 lakh crore.
  • In FY18 and FY17, growth in bank credit to the sector was negative at 1.7 per cent and 6.1 per cent, respectively.
  • As per the RBI data, bank loans to the overall industrial sector grew by 6.9 per cent to Rs 28.58 lakh crore in FY19. In FY18, loans to industries had grown by 0.7 per cent.
  • In FY19, total bank credit rose 13.24 per cent and deposits grew by 10.03 per cent.

10. India stopped importing oil from Iran after US waivers expired: Envoy


  • India has stopped importing oil from Iran after American waivers granted to eight buyers expired early this month.
  • This was stated by Indian Ambassador to the US Harsh Vardhan Shringla at a news conference in Washington.
  • With this India became the latest country to comply with the US sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear programme.
  • Indian Ambassador to the US Harsh Vardhan Shringla said India has stopped importing oil from Iran after the United States refused to extend the exemption from sanctions earlier this month.
Note:
  • The US re-imposed sanctions on Iran in November after pulling out of a 2015 nuclear accord between Tehran and six world powers.
  • To reduce Iran's crude oil export to zero, the US ended on May 2 waivers that had allowed the top buyers of Iranian oil, including India, to continue their imports for six months.

11. WHO declares Algeria, Argentina malaria-free


  • The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Algeria and Argentina as malaria-free, with no recorded cases of indigenous transmission of the disease since 2013 and 2010 respectively.
  • Contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito, malaria remains one of the world’s leading killers. It accounted for an estimated 219 million cases from 87 countries and over 400,000 related deaths in 2017.
  • Over 60 per cent of fatalities were among children under five years, and caused 266,000 of all malaria deaths worldwide, according to WHO's World malaria report 2018.
  • Malaria parasite was first discovered in Algeria by French physician Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran in 1880.
  • With 92 per cent of malaria cases and 93 per cent of malaria deaths recorded from Africa, the region had a high share of the global malaria burden in 2017.
