Asian Games 2018: Complete List of Indian Medal Winners
The 18th Asian Games concluded on September 2, 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia with a grand closing ceremony that saw live performances by some of the world's best artists including iKon, GIGI, Isyana Sarasvati and Denada. The 2018 edition of the Games saw participation from more than 10,000 athletes. Among the total medals won, 465 gold medals were won by the athletes of 28 countries. China topped the medal tally with 132 gold medals, followed by Japan at the second place with 75 gold medals.India concluded its run at the Asian Games with a record show that boasted of a total of 69 medals, including 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze. The previous highest medal tally for India was at the 2010 edition in Guangzhou, China where they had finished sixth with 14 gold, 17 silver and 34 bronze.

Asian Games 2018: Indian Medal Winners
Athletics
Swapna Barman
- Swapna Barman gave India its first-ever Asiad gold in women's heptathlon event. Barman, who has six toes in both her feet, competed in the event with her jaw taped up, as she was battling an excruciating toothache.
- Still, she produced her career-best performance by posting a score of 6026 points. Before her, only Soma Biswas, J J Shobha and Pramila Aiyappa have returned with a medal in the event from the Asian Games.
Arpinder Singh
- Arpinder Singh ended India's 48-year wait for a gold medal in the men's triple jump event at the Asian Games as he topped the finals with his best effort of 16.77 metres.
- He also ended the country's 36 year-long wait to earn a medal in men's triple jump. India had last won a medal in the event in 1982 and the last gold medal came in 1970 through Mohinder Singh Gill.
Jinson Johnson
- Jinson Johnson, with a time of 3:44:72 finished first in the men's 1500m final on the Day 12 of the 18th Asian Games. Johnson, who had won the silver in 800m, took the gold this time, while Manjit Singh, who had won the gold in 800m, finished fourth.
4x400 Relay finals
- The Indian women's relay team clinched the top position in the women's 4x400 relay finals with a timing of 3:28:72. Hima Das gave India the lead at first and the other three racers - MR Poovamma, SL Gayakwad and V Koroth- maintained it right till the end. It was the fifth consecutive gold medal for India in the event, as India has been winning gold in the women's 4x400m relay since 2002 Asian Games.
- In the men's 4x400m relay, the Indian team comprising Kunhu Muhammed, Dharunn Ayyasamy, Mohd. Anas and Arokia Rajiv clocked 3:01.85 to settle for silver. India had finished fourth in this event in the 2014 Asian Games.
Tajinder Pal Singh
- India’s 23-year-old Tajinder Pal Singh clinched the gold medal in men’s shot put with an Asian Games record. It was India’s first gold in Athletics at the 2018 Asian Games and it gave a perfect start to India’s Athletics campaign.
- Tejinder finished first in the men’s shot put final setting a new record at 20.75 m during his fifth attempt surpassing the six-year-old national record of 20.69m set by Om Prakash Karhana.
Neeraj Chopra
Neeraj Chopra won the second gold in Athletics for India when he, with a throw of 88.06m broke the national record and finished first in the men’s javelin throw event. With the win, he became the first Indian javelin thrower to win an Asiad gold.Manjit Singh and Jinson Johnson
- Manjit Singh stole the limelight on Day of 2018 Asian Games by finishing first in the men's 800m final with a timing of 1.46.15. Jinson Johnson followed close behind with a timing of 1.46.35 to finish at the second place.
- It was India’s only second one-two at the Asian Games as Ranjit Singh and Kulwant Singh had won a gold and silver at the inaugural edition in New Delhi in 1951. Manjit’s gold was also the first after Charles Bor romeo’s feat in the 1982 Asian Games.
Silver Medals
- Among the many silver medals won by India in athletics, Neena Varakil won silver in women’s long jump and so did veteran long distance runner Sudha Singh and Dharun Ayyasamy, who finished second in women’s 3000m steeplechase and men’s 400m hurdles respectively.
- India's Muhammed Anas and Hima Das also bagged the silver medal in the men's and women's 400 metres races respectively. While Anas completed the race in 45.69 seconds to be second, Hima clocked record-breaking 50.79 seconds to take the second place in the women's race.
- Dutee Chand also won silver in the women's 100 m event thus, winning the country's first medal in 20 years in a women's 100 event. India's last medal in this event was a bronze, which was won by Rachita Mistry in 1998 Asian Games.
- Dutee also won another silver for India, after she came second in the women's 200 m event with a finish time of 23.20 sec.
Bronze Medals
- Team India's first bronze medal in athletics came through Seema Punia, who with a throw of 62.26 finished at the third sport in women's discus throw finals. The other Indian in the competition, Sandeep Kumari, finished fifth.
- In the women's 1500m final, P Chitra won the bronze medal after she finished the race with a time of 4:12:56.
Equestrian
In another first, Fouaad Mirza became the first Indian to win an Asian Games individual equestrian medal since 1982. He finished second with a score of 26.40 in the individual equestrian jumping event behind Japan’s Oiwa Yoshiaki. Further, he along with his teammates Rakesh Kumar, Ashish Malik and Jitender Singh guided India to a second-place in the equestrian team event.Kurash
- India's first medal in the event came through Malaprabha Yallapa Jadav, who picked up bronze following her semifinal defeat.
- This was followed by silver, which was won by Pinky Balhara in the women's 52 kg final after she lost to Uzbekistan's Gulnor Sulaymanova by 10-0.
Tennis
Men's doubles
- The Indian tennis duo of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan clinched the 6th gold medal for India on Day 6 of Asian Games 2018, after they beat Kazakhstan's Denis Yevseyev and Aleksandr Bublik 6-3, 6-4 in the men's doubles tennis event.
- Historically, it has been India’s best event in tennis at the Asian Games. The country had won four gold medals in men’s doubles in the last six editions.
Men's Singles
- In men's singles tennis semifinal, India's Prajesh Gunneswaran also settled for bronze after losing to Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 2-6, 2-6.
Women's Singles
- On Day 5 of Asian Games 2018, Indian tennis player Ankita Raina lost her semifinals match by 4-6, 7-6 to China’s Zhang Shuai. She had to settle for bronze.
- However, the feat has made her the only second Indian woman after Sania Mirza to win a medal in the tennis singles event at the Asian Games.
Mixed Doubles
- The Indian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Ankita Raina lost in the mixed doubles quarterfinals to Indonesia's CB Rungkat and A Sutjiadi.
Badminton
PV Sindhu
- In the much-awaited women's singles gold medal match between PV Sindhu and Tai Tzu Yin, Sindhu had to settle for silver after she lost to Yin in straight sets. Despite the loss, Sindhu became the first badminton player to win silver in Asian Games.
- In her semifinal match, she had defeated Japan's Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 15-21, 21-10 to become the first-ever badminton player to reach the final of Asian Games in either singles or doubles.
Saina Nehwal
- Though Nehwal lost to world no.1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in straight games of 17-21, 14-21 in their semifinal clash, she became the only second singles player and the first female one to win an Asiad bronze after Syed Modi, who had won a bronze in 1982.
Rowing
Men’s Sculls team
- The India’s men’s sculls team comprising Sawarn Singh, Sukhmeet Singh, Dattu Baban Bhokanal and Om Prakash won a historic gold in the quadruple sculls event.
Dushyant Chauhan
- Dushyant Chauhan, who was a bronze medalist in lightweight single sculls at Incheon, defended his third place and won the bronze in the men's lightweight single sculls event.
Double Sculls
- Bhagwan Singh and Rohit Kumar won another bronze in men's lightweight double sculls.
Wrestling
Bajrang Punia
- Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia snatched the spotlight on the Day 1 of the 18th Asian Games by opening India’s gold medal account. Punia won his maiden Asian Games gold in the 65kg category by defeating Japan's Takatani Daichi 10-8 in an exciting final bout.
- The 24-year-old, with his performance, has become the only third Indian, after Yogeshwar Dutt and Rajinder Singh, to win two gold medals in a year (CWG and Asiad).
Vinesh Phogat
- Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who entered the quarterfinals of the women’s 50kg weight category after beating China’s Sun Yanan 8-2, brought home the second gold medal for India. Phogat earned the medal with a 6-2 win over Japan's Irie Yuki in women's 50kg freestyle wrestling.
- It is Phogat's second Asiad medal after winning a bronze medal in the women's freestyle 48 kg category at Incheon in 2014. With the win, she created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at the Asian Games.
Shooting
Rahi Sarnobat
- Shooter Rahi Sarnobat won the 4th gold medal for India in the finals of women’s 25m pistol event on Day 4 of Asian Games 2018. With the feat, she became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in shooting at the Asian Games.
Saurabh Chaudhary and Abhishek Verma
- On Day 3 of Asian Games 2018, shooters Saurabh Chaudhary and Abhishek Verma added two more medals to India’s medal account.
- The 16-year-old Indian shooter, Saurabh Choudhary clinched the gold after producing an Asian Games record score of 240.7 in the 10m Air Pistol event. It was India's third gold medal at the ongoing Games.
- Abhishek Verma, on the other hand, bagged the bronze after scoring 219.3 in the same event.
Sanjeev Rajput
- Sanjeev Rajput won silver for India by finishing second in the finals of 50m rifle 3 positions men’s event.
Deepak Kumar
- India’s first medal on Day 2 was won by shooter Deepak Kumar, who won the much-deserved silver in the men’s 10m air rifle finals event.
Lakshay Sheoran
- Indian shooter Lakshay, who made his Asian Games debut, helped India secure its second medal of the day with a score of 43/50. The 19-year-old shooter bagged a silver medal at the finals of the men’s trap event.
Shardul Vihan
- The highlight of day 5 was when 15-year-old Shardul Vihan, in an unexpected triumph, won India’s 4th silver medal in the finals of the men’s double trap event.
Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar
- India’s first medal at the Games was won by the nation’s mixed rifle team comprising Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar, who had to settle for bronze after they were defeated by China.
Heena Sidhu
- Heena Sidhu, who had won a gold and silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, had to settle for bronze in the women's 10m Air Pistol event at the 18th Asian Games.
Boxing
Amit Panghal
- India’s Amit Panghal stunned the reigning Olympic champion to clinch gold. Amit beat Uzbekistan's Hasanboy Dusmatov to finish at the top in the men's Light Fly (49kg) finals.
This is the first gold medal in boxing for India in this edition of the Asian Games.
Vikas Krishnan
- Indian boxer Vikas Krishan had to settle for bronze after he was declared medically unfit to fight his semifinal bout in men's 75kg event due to a cut on his left eyelid, which he sustained earlier in the event.
- The 26-year-old was to take on Kazakhstan's Amankul Abilkhan in his last-four clash but was forced out due to the injury.
Bridge Team
Men’s Pair
- Pranab Bardhan and Shibhnath Sarkar clinched the gold medal in the Bridge Men’s Pair event.
- With the win, Pranab Bardhan became the oldest man in Indian contingent to win a medal at the 18th Asian Games.
Men’s Team
- The bridge men’s team comprising Jaggy Shivdasani, Rajeshwar Tewari, Ajay Khare, Raju Tolani, Debabrata Majumder and Sumit Mukherjee won bronze in their event.
Mixed Team
- The Indian bride team comprising Kiran Nadar, Hema Deora, Hima Khandelwal, Bachiraju Satyanarayana, Gopinath Manna and Rajeev Khandelwal won bronze in the men’s bridge team event.
Kabaddi
Men's Kabaddi
- The Indian men’s kabaddi team failed to make it to the finals for the very first time. India's nearly unchallenged domination of the Asian Games kabaddi competition ended on August 23 with the men's team settling for the bronze, after they suffered a shocking 18-27 loss at the hands of two-time runners-up Iran.
Women’s Kabaddi
- Another disappointing finish for India was in the women's kabaddi final, when the defending champions had to settle for silver after being defeated by Iran 27-24.
Hockey
Women’s Hockey
- The Indian women hockey team's dream of reclaiming the gold at the Asian Games after 36 years remained unfulfilled after they lost 1-2 to Japan to settle for the silver medal.
- To begin with, the Indians were the favourites to win the title as they are ranked five places above Japan at the ninth position in the world rankings.
Men’s Hockey
- The Indian men's hockey team lost to Malaysia in penalty shootouts in their semifinal match. However, they won the bronze medal after they defeated Pakistan 2-1 in their bronze medal play-offs.
Squash
Women's singles
- Indian squash players Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Joshna Chinappa had to settle for bronze in the women's singles after losing to their respective opponents in the semifinals of the 18th Asian Games on August 25.
- While Dipika lost to defending champion Nicol David of Malaysia in the first semifinal, Joshna lost to Malaysia's Sivasangari Subramaniam. This is Dipika’s second Asian Games bronze medal after she lost in the semi-finals of the 2014 Asian Games.
Women’s team
- The women’s squash team had to settle for silver after they lost 0-2 against Hong Kong in the finals.
Men's singles
- Top-seeded Indian squash player Sauran Ghosal lost to Chung Ming Au of Hong Kong China 12-10, 13-11, 6-11, 6-11, 6-11 in the squash men's singles semi-final. Ghosal had won silver at the 2014 Asian Games.
Men’s Team
- The Indian men’s squash team comprising Saurav Ghosal, Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu, Ramit Tandon and Mahesh Mangaonkar had to settle for bronze after losing 0-2 to Hong Kong in the semifinals of the men’s squash event
Sailing
- India clinched three medals in sailing on Day 13 of the 18th Asian Games with Varsha Gautham and Sweta Shervegar winning silver in the 49er FX women's event, Harshita Tomar claiming bronze in the Open Laser 4.7 event and Varun Thakkar Ashok and Chengappa Ganapathy Kelapanda settling for bronze the 49er men's event.
Wushu
- India won four bronze medals in Wushu - Roshibina Devi in Sanda 60kg category, Santosh Kumar in Sanda 56kg category, Surya Bhanu Partap Singh in Sanda 60kg category and Narender Grewal in Sanda 65kg category.
- By far, this is the best performance by the Indian Wushu contingent in the Asian Games, as in Incheon games in 2014, they had secured 2 bronze medals.
- Wushu is a martial art form that is made up of two disciplines, namely Taoulu (forms) and Sanda (sparring). Sanda comprises the combative aspect of the art-form, while Taoulu involves a demonstration of the moves, acrobatic routines and techniques that that are implemented in Sanda.
Archery
- India won a silver medal each in the men’s and women’s compound archery team event.
- In the women's team gold medal match, India lost to Korea by 228-231 to settle for silver. In the men's compound team finals, though the match was tied at 229-229, the gold medal was awarded to Korea and India had to settle for silver.
Table Tennis
- The pair of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra won bronze in the mixed doubles event of the table tennis.
About Asian Games
- The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, is a continental multi-sport event held every four years between athletes from all over Asia.
- Since 1982, the Games have been organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).Prior to that, the Games were regulated by the Asian Games Federation (AGF).
- The AGF regulated the very first Asian Games, which were held in New Delhi, India in 1951 until the 1978 Games, till the federation’s breakup.
- The Games are the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.
- Overall, nine nations have hosted the Asian Games and forty-six nations have participated in it, including Israel, which was excluded from the Games after their last participation in 1974.
- The last edition of the Games was hosted by Incheon, South Korea from 19 September to 4 October 2014. The current edition was originally scheduled to be hosted by Vietnam in Hanoi, however, the country withdrew its bid, based on economic considerations.
- Following Vietnam’s withdrawal, Indonesia offered to hold the 18th Asian Games. This will be the second time that Indonesia hosts the Asian Games. The first one was held in Jakarta in 1962.
- This will be the first time that the Asian Games will be held in two cities - Jakarta and Palembang.
2018 Asian Games Logo and Mascots
- The logo for the 18th Asian Games is a colorful circle taken from the shape of the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium and named the Energy of Asia, depicting the strengthening spirit of the Games, participated by multicultural nations shining for all the world to see.
- The three mascots of the Games include - Bhin Bhin, Atung and Kaka.
- The mascots represent three aspects of the competitive games- Strategy, Speed and Strength.
- Bhin Bhin depicts the image of the Cendrawasih or Bird of Paradise, which is mainly found in Papua,
- Atung is a Bawean Deer, the symbol of speed and Kaka is a Rhino representing strength.
- Each mascot wears special attire inspired by the traditional textiles from Papua, Jakarta and Palembang.
