BANKING & ECONOMY
  • Axis Bank becomes the first bank in the country to introduce Iris Scan Authentication feature for Aadhaar-based transactions through its micro ATM tablets.
  • India’s largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI) launched its Multi Option Payment Acceptance Device (MOPAD) for digital payments convenience of merchants and consumers.
  • According to data released by Central Statistics Office (CSO), factory output measured in terms of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) had reported five-month high to 7% in Jun 2018.
  • Bajaj Allianz General Insurance entered into a bancassurance deal with Vijaya Bank.

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) transferred surplus (dividend) of Rs. 50,000 crore to Govt for year ended in Jun 2018, over 63% more than Rs 30,659 crore which it transferred in 2017.
  • The  Appointments  Committee  of  Cabinet  (ACC)  approved  appointment  of  Chartered  Accountant, Swaminathan Gurumurthy and businessman, Satish Kashinath Marathe as another non-official director on Central Board of Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Bank of India (SBI) for getting Long Term Unsecured Loan of Rs 25000 crore for 10 years with 3 years of moratorium on repayments.
  • The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council has decided to start a pilot project to give cashbacks to consumers in order to incentivise digital payments in the country.

  • The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) approved 122 new research project proposals worth Rs 112 crore for funding under its IMPRINT-II (Impacting Research Innovation and Technology) scheme.

  1. Parliament passed Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill, 2018 to replace Ordinance promulgated by President in May 2018.

Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED) has signed MoU with National Medicinal Plant Board to promote Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) forest produced for livelihood development of tribal people by promoting primary level value addition to MAPs produce from forest area at the grassroots level.

  6. CCEA approved continuation and revision of Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Post Matric Scholarship for Other Backward Classes Students for studying in India (PMS-OBC) till 2020.
  7. Union Cabinet approved extension of term of Commission to examine the issue of Sub-categorization of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Central List till Nov 2018.
  8. CCEA approved continuation of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) beyond 12th Five Year Plan period (2012–2017).

  10. The Union Govt doubled import duties on 328 textile products to 20% from existing rate of 10% under Section 159 of the Customs Act, 1962.

  15. Parliament passed Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Third Amendment) Bill, 2017 to provide constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC).
  16. President gave assent to Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Act, 2018.
    • It aimed at allowing a court to try offences related to cheque bounce expeditiously and direct the drawee to pay a minimum of 20% of cheque amount as interim compensation.
  17. President gave assent to State Banks (Repeal and Amendment) Act to repeal two other laws State Bank of India (Subsidiary Banks) Act, 1959 and State Bank of Hyderabad Act, 1956.
  18. President gave assent (under Article 111) to Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018 passed by Parliament.
  19. Union Finance Ministry further extended deadline on imposing import duty hike on 29 products, imported from United States (US) by 45 days till Sept 18, 2018 from earlier Aug 4, 2018.
