1. National Sports Day being observed today

  • The National Sports Day is celebrated on 29th August every year to mark the birthday of legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand.
  • The President also conferred Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (Para Athlete Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia and Hockey player Sardara Singh), Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.
  • In 1956, The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan.
Note:
  • Dhyan Chand was born on 29th August 1905 in Allahabad.
  • Dhyan Chand Known as ‘The Magician’ of hockey for his superb ball control.

2. 29th August: International Day against Nuclear Tests

  • The International Day against Nuclear Tests is being observed every year on 29th August to brings public awareness and education about the effects of global nuclear weapon tests.
  • The day was established on 2nd December 2009 at the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly by the resolution 64/35, which was adopted unanimously.

3. NT Rama Rao’s son Harikrishna passes away

  • Former Rajya Sabha member & Telugu actor Nandamuri Harikrishna (61-year) was killed in a road accident in Nalgonda district in Telangana.
  • He was the son of former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N. T. Rama Rao.
  • In 1964, Harikrishna entered films as child artiste in Krishnavataram.
  • His movies like Sitayya in which he playful-length role was received well by the audience.

4. First SAARC Agri Cooperative Business Forum begins in Kathmandu

  • The First South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Agri Cooperative Business Forum has begun in Kathmandu, Nepal.
  • The Forum brings together representatives both from the government and non-governmental entities from the Member States of SAARC as well as from regional & international organizations.
  • The theme of Forum is the 'Organizing and Strengthening Family Farmers’ Cooperatives to attain the Sustainable-Development-Goals-1 and 2 in South Asia'.
  • It is being co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and Asian Farmers’ Association with the support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

5. Centre and the World Bank sign loan agreements for India Energy Efficiency Scale up Programme

  • The union government and the World Bank have signed 300-million Dollar loan agreements for India Energy Efficiency Scale up Programme (EESL) in New Delhi.
  • The Program will help scale-up the deployment of energy saving measures in residential and public sectors, strengthen EESL’s institutional capacity, and enhance its access to commercial financing.
  • The Program will help tackle the financing, awareness, technical and capacity barriers faced by new energy efficiency programs and support the UJALA program of the Government.

6. India, Rajasthan Govt. and World Bank sign a USD 250 Million agreement

  • The Government of India, Rajasthan Government and the World Bank have signed a USD 250 million Development Policy Loan (DPL) to support the Rajasthan Government in improving the performance of its Electricity Distribution Sector.
  • The Second Programmatic Electricity Distribution Reform Development Policy Loan for Rajasthan is the second in the series of two operations (first in March 2017) planned for a comprehensive turnaround of Rajasthan’s electricity distribution sector.

7. India's food grain output to touch the all-time high of over 284 mn tonnes in 2017-18

  • ccording to the Agriculture Ministry fourth advance estimate, India’s food grain production is estimated to grow to an all-time high of over 284.83 million tonnes (MT) in the 2017-18 crop year ending June.
  • The previous record foodgrain output was 275.11 million tonnes (MT) achieved in the 2016-17 crop year.
  • Wheat output has been pegged at a record 99.70 million tonnes (MT), rice (112.91- MT) and pulses at (25.23 - MT).
  • The ministry also revised upward the total food grain production by 5.3 million tonnes from the previous projection of 279.51 million tonnes for the 2017-18 crop year.

8. Piyush Goyal inaugurates Smart Railway Conclave in New Delhi

  • The Union Minister of Railway ‘Piyush Goyal’ has inaugurated the Smart Railway Conclave in New Delhi (organised by FICCI).
  • In his opening remarks, he reiterated Government’s commitment to ensuring a smart Railway and a smart nation so that every citizen of India gets a better future.
  • Every year electrification of Railways has been taken vigorously which will save USD 2 billion.
  • Indian Railways has also planned to make 6,000 Railway stations to be all Wi-Fi enabled.

9. Charging Stations for e-Vehicles inaugurated in Udyog Bhawan

  • The Union Minister Anant G. Geete has inaugurated the two charging stations, one for fast charging (DC) and the other for slow charging (AC) in Udyog Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • This is part of the Swachhta Pakhwada celebrations of the Department of Heavy Industry.
  • Eight charging stations (2- BHEL & 6- EESL) have been installed in the premises of Udyog Bhawan for facilitating charging of e-vehicles.
  • AC charger consists of 3 outlets, charging 3 cars at the same time with the charging time from 6-8 hours.
  • DC charger consists of a single outlet, charging one car at a time with the charging time of 1.5 hours.

10. Global Finance names DBS world's best bank

  • DBS Bank has become the first Singaporean and Asian winner of Global Finance Magazine's Best Bank in the World Award (last year's winner ING).
  • This came after DBS was named Asia's top bank in May in the magazine's annual World's Best Bank awards.
  • In July, DBS was named the World's Best Digital Bank and the World's Best Bank for SMEs (small and medium enterprises) by Euromoney magazine.
  • To become the Best Bank in the World requires a special combination of safety and innovation in today's rapidly-evolving financial services industry.

International Appointments

11. Emmerson Mnangagwa sworn in as Zimbabwe's new president

  • Emmerson Mnangagwa has taken the oath as Zimbabwe's president after narrowly winning the Zimbabwean general election, 2018.
  • He took the oath before Chief Justice Luke Malaba and pledged to “protect and promote the rights of Zimbabweans” in his oath.
  • Earlier, He won last month's bitterly contested election that marked the country's first vote since Robert Mugabe was removed from power.

  • The President of Zimbabwe is the head of state of Zimbabwe, elected by direct universal suffrage using a two-round system.
