1. Vienna named the world's most liveable city

  • European city Vienna (Austria’s capital) has been named the world's most liveable city in 2018 Global Liveability Index released by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
  • Melbourne came second and Osaka third.
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Liveability Index ranks 140 cities each year on those topics, as well as stability, culture, and environment
Top five most liveable cities:
  • 1st: Vienna, Austria
  • 2nd: Melbourne, Australia
  • 3rd: Osaka, Japan
  • 4th: Calgary, Canada
  • 5th: Sydney, Australia

2. 24th World Congress of Philosophy held in Beijing, China

  • The five days 24th World Congress of Philosophy (WCP) was held in Beijing, China (13 to 17 August) 2018.
  • The objective of the WCP is to contribute to the development of professional relations between philosophers of all countries, promote philosophical education, and contribute to the impact of philosophical knowledge on global problems.
  • The theme of WCP was “Learning To Be Human”.
  • Around 6,000 philosophers & academics from 121 countries and regions had attended the event.
  • The World Congress of Philosophy is a global meeting of philosophers held every five years (quinquennialy) under auspices of International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP).

3. Mario Abdo Benítez sworn in as new President of Paraguay

  • Mario Abdo Benítez (46-year) has been sworn in as the new President  of Paraguay after defeating his liberal rival in April elections.
  • He replaces Horacio Cartes
  • Mr. Abdo Benítez is the son of a close aide to ex-military dictator Alfredo Stroessner.
  • Paraguay is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest.
  • Paraguay lies on both banks of the Paraguay River.

4. NITI Aayog launches ‘Pitch to MOVE’ for startups

  • NITI Aayog has launched a mobility pitch competition ‘Pitch to MOVE’ to provide budding entrepreneurs of India with a unique opportunity to pitch their business ideas to a distinguished jury.
  • The competition would enable start-ups working in the various fields of mobility to pitch their ideas to industry leaders and venture capitalists for raising investments.
  • The winners of the event will be felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the valedictory session of the Global Mobility Summit (8th September 2018).
  • The objective of the competition to identify and reward the startups offering innovative solutions for shared, connected and environment-friendly mobility.

5. Akshay Kumar becomes a brand ambassador for road safety campaigns

  • The Union Minister Mr. Gadkari has announced the appointment of film actor Akshay Kumar as Road Safety Brand Ambassador.
  • Mr. Gadkari has launched the three short films for generating public awareness towards road safety.
  • Actor Akshay Kumar has featured in these films, which are directed by Shri R.Balki.

6. FSSAI launches RUCO initiative to collect, convert used cooking oil into biofuel

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched RUCO (Repurpose Used Cooking Oil) initiative to enable collection and conversion of used cooking oil to biodiesel.
  • Around 64 companies at 101 locations have been identified to enable collection of used cooking oil.
  • FSSAI is a nodal statutory agency responsible for protecting and promoting public health in India through regulation and supervision of food safety.

7. Govt. dismisses Allahabad Bank CEO Usha Ananthasubramanian from service

  • The Union Government has dismissed Usha Ananthasubramanian (former CEO/ MD of Allahabad Bank), from service on the day when she was supposed to superannuate.
  • Earlier, Allahabad Bank had divested Ananthasubramanian of all her powers as MD three months back, after she was named in the CBI charge-sheet in the Rs 14,000 crore (PNB fraud case).
  • She had held top leadership roles in PNB in two separate terms first (July 2011 to Nov 2013) & second (Aug 2015 to May 2017).

8. Major Aditya Kumar & rifleman Aurangzeb to get Shaurya Chakra

  • Major Aditya Kumar of Indian Army & rifleman Aurangzeb has been conferred the Shaurya Chakra along with 18 others Armed Forces Personnel and members of Paramilitary Forces.
  • Rifleman Aurangzeb was brutally killed by terrorists in Pulwama when he was on his way home for Eid.
  • Sepoy Vrahma Pal Singh will be awarded Kirti Chakra posthumously.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has approved these names on the eve of Independence Day along with three Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry), 93 Sena Medals (Gallantry) and, 11 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry).
  • The President also conferred Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) to Group Captain Abhishek Sharma, Squadron Leader Vernon Desmond Keane and Sergeant Shashidhar P Prasad.

9. Anandiben Patel takes additional charge as Chattisgarh Governor

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has given additional charge of Chhattisgarh to Anandiben Patel (Madhya Pradesh Governor) following death of Balramji Dass Tandon (Chhattisgarh Governor).
  • She will discharge additional duties until the regular arrangements for the office of governor of Chhattisgarh are made.
  • Governor is the constitutional head of each of the twenty-nine Indian states.
  • The governor is appointed by the President of India for a term of five years and holds office at the President's pleasure.


10. Former India captain Ajit Wadekar passes away

  • Former India cricket captain and batsman Ajit Wadekar passed away in Mumbai.
  • He was a trailblazer in Indian cricket despite a mere 37 Test appearances, leading India to triumphs in England and the West Indies in 1971.
  • Wadekar scored 2,113 runs in his Test career and was also the country's first ODI (One Day International) captain.
  • Wadekar is the only cricketer apart from Lala Amarnath and Chandu Borde to have served as captain, manager, and selector in Indian cricket.
  • He has bestowed the Arjuna Award (in 1967) and Padmashri (in 1972).


11. Nihal Sarin becomes 53rd Chess Grandmaster from India

  • The International Master Nihal Sarin (14-year) has become the 53rd Grandmaster of India despite losing his final round game to Richard Rapport (Hungary) in the final round of Abu Dhabi Masters.
  • Nihal tallied 5.5 points out of a possible nine.
  • Telangana boy E. Arjun (14-year) has become the 54th Grandmaster from India.

12. Ramesh Powar named head coach of women's national team

  • Former Indian off-spinner Ramesh Powar (40-year) has been appointed as the head coach of India women's cricket team till the ICC World T20(in November 2018).
  • Powar was appointed interim coach of the team last month after the resignation of Tushar Arothe.
  • During this period, the team will tour Sri Lanka for three ODIs and five T20Is, followed by a T20I series and the World T20 in the West Indies.
