1. Pakistan gets its first woman chief justice of the high court

  • Justice Tahira Safdar has been named as the first-ever woman Chief Justice by the Chief Justice of Pakistan ‘Mian Saqib Nisar’.
  • In 1982, Justice Safdar had made history when she became the first woman civil judge in Balochistan.
  • Currently, Justice Tahira Safdar is a member of the three-judge special court conducting the trial of former President Pervez Musharraf for committing treason by proclaiming a state of emergency (November 2007).
Note: The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) is the head of the court system of Pakistan (the judicature branch of government) and the chief judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

2. Analjit Singh appointed non-executive Chairman of Max Financial Services

  • Max Financial Services has named its sponsor and founding shareholder Analjit Singh as nonexecutive chairman of the company.
  • Now, Kidwai will continue in her role as an independent non-executive director of the company.
  • Max Life Insurance Company is the largest non-bank private life insurer in India and contributes over two-thirds of Max Group’s revenues.
Note:
  • Max Life Insurance is a part of the Max India Ltd. Group.
  • It is a joint venture between Max Financial Services and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company.

3. Arman Ali appointed an executive director of NCPEDP

  • The National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) has appointed ‘Arman Ali’ as its executive director.
  • He would assume charge from 1st October 2018.
  • Earlier, Javed Abidi (first director of NCPEDP) passed away on 4th March after succumbing to the chest infection.
Note:
  • The National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) is trust established in 1996.
  • The organizational philosophy is that society needs to change traditionally held views of "charity and welfare to those of productivity and empowerment of disabled people".

4. First Meeting of India-Bangladesh Joint Committee on Border Haats concluded

  • The first meeting of the India-Bangladesh Joint Committee on Border Haats was held in Agartala, Tripura.
  • Both sides noted the positive impact of Border Haats on the livelihoods of the people living in areas adjoining the Haats.
  • They agreed that the next meeting would be held in Bangladesh on mutually agreed dates.

5. India & Rwanda sign eight agreements

  • India and Rwanda signed eight agreements after delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Paul Kagame in Kigali (Rwandan President).
  • The two countries signed agreements in the fields of Defence, Trade, Agriculture, Leather and allied products and Dairy.
  • India also extended two Lines of Credit of 100 million US dollars each - one for development of industrial parks and Kigali Special Economic Zone, and the other for three agricultural projects in Rwanda.
  • India will soon open a High Commission in Rwanda.

6. 19th Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations begin at Drass War Memorial in J&K

  • The 19th Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations has begun at the Drass War Memorial in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • 500 war heroes paid tributes to the War Heroes by laying a wreath at the memorial in Kargil town.
  • The main function of the wreath-laying ceremony will take place on 26th July 2018 (final day of celebrations).
Note:
  • The Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year for three days till 26th July to commemorate India's emphatic victory against Pakistan.
  • It remembers the supreme sacrifice of 500 heroes who laid down their lives and those who are still alive.

7. Union Government set up the high-level committee to check mob lynching

  • The Union government has set up a high-level committee headed by the Union Home Secretary ‘Rajiv Gauba’ to formulate appropriate measures to deal with mob lynching incidents.
  • The committee will make its recommendations to the Government in four weeks.

8. Pulitzer Prize-winning restaurant critic Jonathan passes away

  • Los Angeles Times and Pulitzer Prize-winning restaurant critic Jonathan Gold (57-year) passed away due to pancreatic cancer.
  • In 2007, when he was writing for L.A. Weekly, Gold became the first restaurant critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for criticism.

9. Sunil Chhetri & Kamala Devi adjudged 2017 AIFF Player of the Year

  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has named India Captain Sunil Chhetri (33-year) as the AIFF Player of the Year in the Federation’s Executive Committee Meeting in Mumbai.
  • Kamala Devi (26-year-old) bagged the 2017 AIFF Woman Player of the Year.
  • Chennaiyin FC midfielder Anirudh Thapa (20-year) had been declared the AIFF Emerging Footballer of the Year.
  • Goalkeeper E Panthoi had won the Woman Emerging Footballer of the Year.

10. World Junior Squash Championships begins in Chennai

  • The Men's team event (aged 19 and below) of the World Junior Squash Championships has begun in Chennai.
  • A total of 24 countries (divided into eight groups) are taking part and two teams from each group will advance to the knock-out phase.
  • India, placed in Group-E alongside Switzerland and Saudi Arabia, is seeded fifth.

11. Indian sprinter Muhammad Anas sets new national record

  • Indian sprinter Muhammad Anas (23-years) has broken his own 400m national record at the Cena Noveho Mesta nad Metuji event.
  • He achieved the feat while winning gold with a time of 45.24 seconds in the tournament (earlier national record of 45.31 seconds).

12. Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman becomes the quickest player to reach 1000 runs in ODI

  • Pakistan opening batsman Fakhar Zaman (28-years) has become the first player from Pakistan to score a double century in a one-day international (ODI).
  • Fakhar Zaman became the quickest player in history to reach 1,000 runs in the ODI format.
  • Fakhar Zaman (takes 18-innings) has broken the record of West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards (takes 21 matches).
  • Zaman is only the sixth overall after Rohit Sharma (3), Sachin Tendulkar(1), Virender Sehwag(1), Chris Gayle(1) and Martin Guptill (1).
