1. Dipa Karmakar clinches the gold medal at Gymnastics World Cup

  • India's premier gymnast ‘Dipa Karmakar’ (24-years from Tripura) clinched a gold medal (Scored 14.150) in the vault event of FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey.
  • This is Dipa's first medal in a World Challenge Cup.
  • She returned to action after nearly two years of lay-off due to injury.
  • Dipa has also qualified in balance beam finals by finishing third in the qualification with a score of 11.850.
Note:
  • She attained the 4th position in Women's Vault Gymnastics event of Rio Olympics 2016 with an overall score of 15.066.
  • She is the recipient of the fourth highest civilian award ‘Padma Shri’ in the Republic of India and Khel Ratna award in August 2016.
  • Dipa Karmakar is the first Indian female gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics.

2. Anju Khosla becomes oldest Indian women to participate in the Ironman Triathlon

  • Anju Khosla (52-years) has become the oldest Indian woman to complete an Ironman Triathlon in Carinthia, Austria.
  • Ironman Triathlon involves 3.86 km swimming leg, 180.25 bike leg and marathon of 42.2 km, all of which is to be completed without a break.
  • Anju completed her first full triathlon in 15 hours, 54 minutes and 54 seconds and ranked 38th out of the 41 competitors in her age category (W50).
  • Around 2,761 competitors took part in the triathlon, out of which 2,315 completed the race.

3. Indian lifter bags bronze medal in junior world championship

  • Indian lifter Jhilli Dalabehera has bagged the bronze medal in the 2018 IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships at Tashkent.
  • She lifted 167 kg in the 48 kg category to finish third on the podium.
  • Jhilli is the second woman lifter after Saikhom Mirabai Chanu in 2013 to win a medal in the Junior World Championships.

4. India beat England by 7 wickets in 3rd Twenty-20 to clinch series 2-1

  • India thrashed England by seven wickets in the third and final Twenty-20 International at Bristol to clinch the series, 2-1.
  • India restricted England to 198/9 in 20 overs.
  • In reply, opener Rohit Sharma amassed his third T-20 ton as Team India overhauled the target with 8 balls to spare and 7 wickets in hand.
  • Rohit made an unbeaten 100 off just 56 balls (11 fours and 5 sixes).
  • MS Dhoni has become the first wicket-keeper to take 50 catches in T20s and also the first keeper to take 5 catches in a single T20 match.

5. Mark Zuckerberg becomes the 3rd richest person in the world

  • Facebook's co-founder Mark Zuckerberg (34-year) has overtaken ‘Warren Buffett’ (chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc) as the world’s third-richest person.
  • Now, Zuckerberg worth USD 81.6 billion is trailing only Jeff Bezos (Amazon.com Inc. founder) and Bill Gates (Microsoft Corp. co-founder)
  • It’s the first time that the three wealthiest people on the ranking made their fortunes from technology.
  • According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Zuckerberg wealth expanded over soaring of around 2.4% in Facebook's share.

6. RBI cancels the licence of Alwar Urban Co-operative Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the licence of Alwar Urban Co-operative Bank (Rajasthan), as it is not in a position to pay its depositors in full as and when their claims accrue, among other reasons.
  • According to RBI, the cancellation of the licence is effective from the close of business on July 5 this year.
  • Due to licence stands cancelled, the bank has been prohibited from conducting the business of banking, which includes acceptance of deposits and repayment of deposits with immediate effect.

7. Former Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob passes away

  • Former Meghalaya Governor & Senior Congress leader M M Jacob (90-years) passed away due to age-related ailments.
  • Mr. Jacob also served as deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha in the 80s.

8. Kumaoni folk singer Kabutari Devi passes away

  • The famous Kumaoni folk singer Kabutari Devi (70-years) passed away in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.
  • Devi’s songs depicted the struggles in the life of Pahari women.
  • The folk singer has received several honours, which includes the Ministry of Culture, Government of Uttarakhand for her outstanding contribution which echoed the sound of Kumaon hills.
  • Devi is remembered by folk historians as an original voice that represented the culture of the hills.

9. Uday Kumar Varma appointed BCCC member

  • Former Information and Broadcasting (I&B) secretary Uday Kumar Varma (IAS officer -1976 batch Madhya Pradesh cadre) has been appointed as a member of the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC).
  • The BCCC is an independent self-regulatory body set up by the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) to look into complaints pertaining to all non-news general entertainment channels in India.

10. Justice Radhakrishnan sworn in new Chief Justice of Hyderabad High Court

  • Justice Thottathil Bhaskaran Nair Radhakrishnan sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Hyderabad High Court.
  • Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan administered the oath of office to Justice Radhakrishnan at a ceremony at Raj Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
  • He was appointed judge of the Kerala High Court in 2004 and worked as Acting Chief Justice of Kerala High Court in 2015.
  • In 2017, He was elevated as Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court.

11. Two-day plenary meeting of NEC begins in Shillong

  • The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a two-day plenary meeting of the North-Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Meghalaya, on issues related to the all-round development of the Northeast.        
  • NEC is a regional planning body of eight North-eastern states (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura).
  • The plenary will also discuss continuation of NEC schemes till March 2020 as approved by the Cabinet.
Note:
  • The North Eastern Council (NEC) was constituted as a statutory advisory body under the NEC Act 1971 and came into being on the 7th November 1972 at Shillong.

12. PM Modi & South Korean President Moon Jae-in visit Samsung plant

  •  Today, The South Korean President Moon Jae-in attended the India-Korea Business Forum in New Delhi.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the South Korean President jointly inaugurated the world's largest mobile phone factory in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The new 35-acre Samsung Electronics facility can manufacture nearly 120 million mobile phones.
  • This is Mr Moon's first-ever state visit to India after he took over as the President last year.

13. 17th World Sanskrit Conference kicks off at Vancouver in Canada

  •  The Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar has inaugurated the five-day 17th World Sanskrit Conference in Vancouver, Canada.
  • More than 500 scholars and delegates from over 40 countries are participating in the event.
  • The objective of this conference is to promote, preserve and practice the Sanskrit language all over the world by the people.
  • There will be a special panel discussion on over a dozen topics like - History and Education of Women in Vedic Literature, Sanskrit Buddhist Manus, introducing Bhagavata Purana Commentaries and research on the Gargiyajyotisa. 
Note:
  • The World Sanskrit Conference is being held in various countries across the globe once in every three years.
  • The first World Sanskrit Conference was held in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, India (26–31 March 1972).
  • The eighteenth conference is scheduled to be held in Canberra, Australia in 2021.
