BANKING & ECONOMY
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched three Indian mobile payment applications BHIM, RuPay and UPI enabled remittance app of SBI in Singapore aimed at internationalisation of the country’s digital payment platforms.
  • According to index of eight core industries released by Ministry of Commerce and Industry, eight core infrastructure sectors grew by 4.7% higher in Apr 2018.
  • The Govt of India and the World Bank have signed $500 million loan agreement to provide additional financing for the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) Rural Roads Project.
  • India signed an agreement for IBRD Credit of US $21.7 Million from World Bank for Strengthening of Public Financial Management in Rajasthan Project.
  • According to the latest report of Moody’s Investors Service, India’s GDP growth forecast has cut to 7.3% in 2018 from the previous estimate of 7.5% due to higher oil prices and tighter financial conditions.

NATIONAL NEWS
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has presented the ‘Santokbaa Humanitarian Award’ to two noted personalities viz. Child rights activist and Noble Laureate Kailash Satyarthi and space scientist A S Kiran Kumar, former chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Surat, Gujarat.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has launched an Online Analytical Tool to facilitate closer monitoring of flow and utilisation of foreign contributions received by various organisations registered or permitted under Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010.
  • The Union Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs approved the construction of another 1.5 lakh affordable houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) for benefit of urban poor.
    • PMAY(U) aims to provide houses to all poor in urban areas by 2022.
  • The Union Ministry of Tourism for the first time has issued guidelines for Adventure Tourism in India in an effort to make adventure sports safer.
  • Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) rolled out ‘Gaj Yatra’, an awareness campaign to protect elephants from Tura in Garo Hills of Meghalaya.
  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recognized the Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) in Kerala as the world’s first fully solar energy-powered airport.
  • Ministry of Railways conducted one day workshop Mission Raftaar aimed at raising average speed of freight trains and coaching trains in New Delhi.

STATE NEWS
  • Odisha govt has launched Gopabandhu Sambadika Swasthya Bima Yojana, a new Health Insurance Scheme for the journalists.
  • The scheme provides Rs. 2 lakh per annum health insurance cover to all working journalists of the state.
  • The Gujarat govt launched its ‘Reuse of Treated Waste Water Policy’ in Gandhinagar, aims to reduce the state’s dependence on fresh water sources like the Narmada river.
  • The foundation of Sakhi Suraksha Advanced DNA Forensic Laboratory has been laid in the campus of Central Forensic Science Lab (CFSL), Chandigarh.
  • The Union Ministry of AYUSH announced that the main event of 4th International Yoga Day celebrations (IDY-2018) will be held on Jun 21, 2018 at Dehradun, capital city of Uttrakhand.
  • Andhra Pradesh Govt has notified its new state symbols four years after bifurcation of undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2014 into two states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
  • STATE SYMBOLS OF ANDHRA PRADESH
    • State bird: Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri).
    • State tree: Neem (Azadirachta indica).
    • State animal: Black-buck (Antilope cervicapra).
    • State flower: Jasmine (Jasminum officinale).
  • STATE SYMBOLS OF TELANGANA
    • State bird: Indian Roller (coracias benghalensis) or Palapitta.
    • State tree: Jammi Chettu (prosopis cineraria).

  • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar implored Centre for granting Special Category Status for the state.
  • The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) govt submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Rs 189 crore Devika river rejuvenation project to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for approval.

  • The Ministry of Earth Science (MoES) launched a new system to generate more accurate and area specific forecast of extreme weather events including rains, heat wave and cold wave.
  • The first biannual Indian Air Force Commanders’ Conference inaugurated by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at Air Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully tested the maiden flight of new surface-to-air missile (yet to get formal name) powered by Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) propulsion Technology.
  • 22nd trilateral naval Malabar exercise 2018 between India, Japan and United States will held off the coast of Guam in Philippine Sea from Jun 6-15, 2018.
  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired upgraded guided version of Pinaka Rocket from Proof & Experiment Establishment (PXE) at Chandipur, Odisha.
  • Scientists from Newcastle University, UK created world’s first 3D printed human corneas (3D printed thin protective film over eye) that could solve problem of shortage of available eye donors and help millions of blind people gain sight again.
  • Scientists from University of Minnesota, US have discovered that chemical element ruthenium (Ru) is fourth element to have unique magnetic properties (ferromagnetism) at room temperature.
  • United States renamed its oldest and largest stragically important military command US Pacific Command (PACOM) to Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM).

  • India has signed Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with Singapore in nursing which would allow nurses trained in seven nursing institutions across India to gain employment in the South-East Asian country.

  • The social networking giant Facebook has partnered with National Commission for Women (NCW) to launch a digital literacy programme in collaboration with the Cyber Peace Foundation (CPF).
