1. 19th IIFA Awards 2018: International Indian Film Academy Awards

  • Vidya Balan-starrer "Tumhari Sulu" won the Best Picture Award at the International Indian Film Academy Awards 2018 (19th) in Siam Niramit Theatre in Bangkok (Thailand).
  • Irfan Khan was adjudged the Best Actor for his role of a father trying to get his child admitted in a posh English medium school in Delhi in the film "Hindi Medium".
  • Sridevi (posthumously) awarded the Best Female Actor for "Mom" and her husband ‘Boney Kapoor’ received the trophy for her.
  • Newton (India's official entry to Oscars this year) won the award for Best Story for director Masurkar.
  • 19th IIFA Awards were presented in Siam Niramit Theatre in Bangkok, Thailand.

  • The International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA Awards) are a set of awards presented annually by the International Indian Film Academy to honour both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in Bollywood.
  • The first awards were presented in 2000 at The Millennium Dome in London, United Kingdom.

2. Vasundhara Raje conferred with ‘Chief Minister of the Year’ award

  • Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has been conferred the ‘Chief Minister of the Year’ award for her remarkable work in e-governance at the 52nd Skoch Summit in New Delhi.
  • The award was received by Raje’s OSD in advisory council Dr Anuj Saxena and joint director of IT department R L Solanki on her behalf.
  • Union Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh was the chief guest at the function.

3. 25th June: Day of the Seafarer

  • The Day of the Seafarer (DotS) was observed on 25 June by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
  • The theme of the 2018 Day of the Seafarer theme was ‘Seafarers' wellbeing’.
  • The Day was proclaimed with an aim to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade and civil society as a whole.
Note:
  • The Day of the Seafarer (DotS) was established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila.
  • IMO is the United Nations specialised agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.

4. President Tayyip Erdogan returns to power in Turkey

  • President ‘Tayyip Erdogan’ (64-year) has declared victory in Turkey's key Presidential election.
  • According to results released by state-run Anadolu Agency, Mr Erdogan has secured an outright majority of 52.5% in the poll.
  • Erdogan's closest rival, Muharrem Ince (Republican People's Party) received 30.8% of the votes.
  • All three major opposition parties accused Anadolu Agency of manipulating the results and releasing them selectively, a claim dismissed by the government.
Note:
  • The Republic of Turkey is a transcontinental unitary republic in Eurasia, situated in Anatolia in Western Asia and with a smaller portion on the Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe.
  • Ankara is the capital while Istanbul is the country's largest city.

National Affairs

5. Supreme Court notifies new roster for judges

  • The Supreme Court has notified a new roster for the allocation cases to the Judges from 2nd July.
  • According to the new roster, the bench headed Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra will hear all public interest litigations, besides pleas relating to social justice, elections, habeas corpus and contempt of court.
  • Justice Ranjan Gogoi (senior-most judge after the Chief Justice) will deal with labour laws, indirect taxes, personal law and company law cases.
  • The roster was put in the public domain for the first time on 1st February.

6. 3rd Annual Meeting of Asian infrastructure investment bank begins in Mumbai

  •  The third annual Meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has begun in Mumbai.
  • The theme for this year's meeting is "Mobilising Finance for Infrastructure: Innovation and Collaboration".
  • The topics to be discussed in Governor’s seminar include Mobilising Finance for infrastructure, Connectivity Within and Beyond Asia and Leveraging Finance for Asia’s infrastructure.
  • According to Danny Alexander (Vice President of AIIB), more than 3000 people have registered for the annual meeting.
  • Earlier, AIIB annual meetings have been held in 2016 at Beijing, China and in 2017 at Jeju, South Korea.
Note:
  • The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is a multilateral development bank that aims to support the building of infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Currently, the bank has 64 members states while another 22 are prospective members for a total of 86 approved members.

7. Gujarat launches 'Suryashakti Kisan Yojana' for farmers

  • The Gujarat government has launched a solar power scheme for farmers- Suryashakti Kisan Yojana (SKY) enabling them to generate electricity for their captive consumption as well as sell the surplus power to the grid and earn an extra buck.
  • The announcement was made by the Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in Gandhinagar.
  • As per the scheme, farmers having existing electricity connection will be given solar panels as per their load requirements.
  • The State and Central governments will give 60% subsidy on the cost of the project. The farmer is required to take 5% cost, while 35% will be provided to him as an affordable loan with interest rates of 4.5-6%.

8. Sindhu Darshan festival begins in Ladakh region of J&K

  • The three-day annual Sindhu Darshan festival (22nd) celebrates on the bank of Indus River started in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • It will be marked by a holy dip in the Indus River, hosting of the national flag and cultural programme of different areas of the country.
  • The Festival organised by Sindhu Darshan Yatra Samiti and Ladakh Phandey Tsogspa, Leh.
  • In 1997, it was started by the former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani.

National Appointment

9. Arijit Basu appointed SBI's new Managing Director

  • The Union Government has appointed Arjit Basu as Managing Director (MD) of State Bank of India (SBI) till 31st October 2020.
  • He will fill the position that fell vacant following the elevation of Rajnish Kumar as the chairman.
  • Now, the SBI will have four managing directors.
  • Mr Basu has held several key positions in various circles of SBI including the bank's office in Tokyo, Japan.
  • Mr Basu is graduate in Economics and a Master of Arts in History, started his career with the bank almost 35 years ago as a probationary officer(PO).

Obituaries

10. American poet laureate Donald Hall passes away in New Hampshire

  • American poet and writer Donald Hall (89-year) passed away in New Hampshire.
  • He wrote more than 40 books and half of which were works of poetry.
  • He was the United States Poet Laureate (for 2007-08) and received the Robert Frost Medal (in 1991) and the National Medal of Arts (in 2010).

11. Sandeep Sejwal clinches gold at Singapore National Swimming Championships

  • Indian swimmer ‘Sandeep Sejwal’ clinches the gold medal in men's 50 meters breaststroke event at the Singapore National Swimming Championships in Singapore.
  • Virdhawal Khade grabbed a creditable silver medal in the 50 meters freestyle event with a timing of 22.68 seconds.
  • Sandeep broke the Singapore meet record with a timing of 27:59 seconds to win the gold.
  • He bettered his own time of 27.68 seconds in the semi-final by 0.09 seconds.
