1. ICICI Bank board appoints Sandeep Bakhshi as Whole-time director, COO

  • ICICI Bank's board has named Sandeep Bakhshi (57-year) as whole-time director and COO (Chief operating officer).
  • Chanda Kochhar (ICICI Bank’s managing director & CEO) would be on leave till completion of an inquiry against her in the Videocon loan matter.
  • Currently, Mr. Bakhshi is the Managing Director (MD) and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. Ltd.
  • N S Khanna has been appointed as CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance for a period of five years.

2. 19 June: International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict

  • The International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict is observed every year on 19th June to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence.
  • The 2018 theme is “The Plight and Rights of Children Born of War”.

National Affairs

3. IRDAI sets up a panel to review norms for marketing firms

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI) has set up a 10-member panel to review norms related to insurance marketing firm (IMF) with an aim to increase insurance penetration in the country.
  • The new distribution channel of IMF was introduced in 2015 by Irdai, with the objective of increasing insurance penetration through an area-wise registration approach.
  • A review of the regulations is necessary to enable the channel to evolve and fulfill the objective of spreading insurance coverage to all stratum of the society.
  • The panel has also been asked to provide recommendations for issuing guidelines on the areas on which the regulations are silent.

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) is an autonomous, statutory body tasked with regulating and promoting the insurance and reinsurance industries in India.
  • The agency's headquarters are in Hyderabad (moved from Delhi in 2001).

4. Foundation Stone of ‘Auxiliary Production Unit & Artificial Limbs Fitting Centre’ at Faridabad

  • Shri Manohar Lal (Chief Minister of Haryana) and Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar (Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment) laid The Foundation of stone of “Auxiliary Production Unit and State-of-the-Art Artificial Limbs Fitting Centre” at a function in Faridabad, Haryana.
  • Once established, it will not only reinforce the capacity of the Corporation but also provide other rehabilitation services like limbs fitting, disabled help centers, awareness generation about other schemes for empowerment of Divyangjan in NCR.
  • Diversification of rehabilitation and fitment of assistive devices services to other areas will facilitate Divyangjans to cover less a distance for acquiring these devices.

5. Ashwini Kumar Choubey releases 11th Common Review Mission (CRM) report

  • The Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey has released the 11th Common Review Mission (CRM) report of the National Health Mission.
  • India has registered a record 22% reduction in MMR since 2013, which is the highest percentage decline so far when compared to all the previous reductions in MMR as per the earlier rounds of SRS.
  • Maternal Mortality Ratio of India has declined from 167 (in 2011-2013) to 130 (in 2014-2016) due to joint efforts of the Ministry and the states.

6. The 3-day National Yoga Olympiad -2018 in New Delhi

  • A three-day National Yoga Olympiad-2018 has been inaugurated by Mr. Eric Falt (Director and UNESCO) at the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in CIET, New Delhi.
  • This is the third consecutive year of National Yoga Olympiad of NCERT.
  • Around 500 students from 26 States and 4 RIEs are participating in the Olympiad.
  • Two books, Joy of Theatre and Sangeet training packages were released on the occasion.

7. Muthoot Fincorp Limited announced its partnership with NSDC

  • Muthoot Fincorp Limited has announced its partnership with National Skill Development Corporation to train over 10,000 youth over the next three years and make them job ready.
  • Now, Muthoot Fincorp claims to have become the first major private sector player to partner with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to launch the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY-2) programme.
  • Under the scheme, Muthoot Fincorp targets to train over 10,000 people over the next three years and make them job ready.
  • NSDC has approved a target of 3,000 candidates in the first year and 3,500 each in the subsequent two years.

International Affairs

8. US & South Korea agree to suspend the joint military exercise

  • The United States and South Korea have agreed to suspend a joint military exercise scheduled for August this year.
  • This decision was taken following President Donald Trump's pledge to end war games after his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
  • According to Pentagon, there would be a meeting between the secretaries of defense and state as well as Trump's national security adviser on the issue this week.

9. Inter-Governmental Ministerial meeting on anti-doping begins in Colombo

  • The annual two-day Asia and Oceania Region Inter-Governmental Ministerial meeting (15th) on anti-doping began in Colombo (Sri Lanka) with representatives from 29 countries including India.
  • The meeting will discuss how to make the most of government engagement, ensure compliance with the world anti-doping code, support capacity building and a range of other topics.
  • The meeting attended by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to discuss important anti-doping issues that will help in the fight for clean sport.

10. Brooks Koepka wins 2nd US Open Golf title 2018

  • American golfer Brooks Koepka (28-years) has become the first player in 29 years to win back-to-back US Open titles at Shinnecock Hills in New York.
  • Now, Koepka becomes the first player since Curtis Strange (in 1988-89) to win back-to-back U.S. Open events.
  • He emerged victorious by one shot over England's Tommy Fleetwood.
  • The United States Open Championship 2018 (118th) was held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Shinnecock Hills, New York.
