Kendrick Lamar receives the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music

  • Kendrick Lamar has become the first hip-hop artist to win a Pulitzer Prize for Music for his acclaimed 2017 album DAMN during a ceremony at Columbia University in New York City.
  • The Pulitzer Prize for Music is one of the seven American Pulitzer Prizes that are annually awarded for Letters, Drama, and Music.
Note:
  • The Pulitzer Prize is an award for achievements in newspaper, magazine and online journalism, literature, and musical composition in the United States.
  • It was established in 1917 by provisions in the will of American (Hungarian-born) Joseph Pulitzer who had made his fortune as a newspaper publisher.
  • Prizes are awarded yearly in twenty-one categories.

Prez honors Kailash Satyarthi with 'Santokba Humanitarian Award'

  • President Ram Nath Kovind honored Nobel laureate ‘Kailash Satyarthi’ with 'Santokba Humanitarian Award-2018' for his services aimed at the betterment of society.
  • Mr. Satyarhi handed over the award money of Rs.1 crore to the ‘Surakshit Bachpan fund’ to provide legal and medical assistance to child victims of sexual abuse.
  • Former ISRO Chief Shri A S Kiran Kumar was also conferred with this award.
  • The award was instituted by Shree Ramkrishna Knowledge Foundation (SRKKF) and led by diamond baron Govind Dholakia to people who have worked extensively for the betterment of society.
  • The award includes a trophy and a prize money of Rs 01 crore each to the awardees.

  • The Global Day of Parents is observed on the 1st of June every year.
  • The Global Day provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship.
  • The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2012 with resolution A/RES/66/292 and honors parents throughout the world.

  • The World Milk Day has been observed on 1st June each year since 2001.
  • The day is intended to provide an opportunity to bring attention to activities that are connected with the dairy sector.
  • The WMD 2018 theme in India is 'Drink Move Be Strong'.
  • The World Milk Day is a day established by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to recognize the importance of milk as a global food.

Former Himachal Pradesh Governor Urmila Singh passes away

  • Former Himachal Pradesh governor & Congress leader Urmila Singh (71-year) passed away due to illness in Indore.
  • She was appointed as the governor of Himachal Pradesh in 2010.
  • Earlier, she had served as the chairman of the National Scheduled Tribes Commission (NCTC).

RIMPAC from June 27; India among 26 participant countries

  • According to the Pentagon ((United States Department of Defense), as many as 26 countries (including India) will participate in the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) military exercise in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California (from 27th June to 2nd August 2018).
  • 'RIMPAC' known as the world's largest international maritime exercise.
  • The theme this year is “Capable, Adaptive, Partners.”
  • Four countries — Brazil, Israel, Sri Lanka and Vietnam — are participating in RIMPAC for the first time.
  • However, China has been uninvited by the United States for RIMPAC 2018.
  • This year ‘RIMPAC’ involves 47 surface ships, five submarines, 18 national land forces, and more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel.

National Affairs

India improves its childhood index global ranking

  • According to the world childhood index, India has been placed at the 113th position in the list of 175 countries in “End of Childhood Index 2018”
  • Though India improved its ranking in the world childhood index up from 116 in 2017, it has been put in the category of countries characterized by poverty and discrimination against girls.
  • The overall score of India in 2018 rose by 14 points from 754 in 2017 to 768 on a scale of 1000.
  • Singapore and Slovenia are placed at the top sharing the first place in the index and Niger figures at the end of the list at 175.

Indian Economy Grows 7.7% In 4th Quarter: Central Statistics Data

  • According to the data released by the Central Statistics Office, Indian economy grew 7.7% in the fourth quarter of 2017-18.
  • The GDP had expanded 5.6%, 6.3%, and 7%, in the first three quarters of 2017-18.
  • In the first quarter of 2016-17, the previous high GDP growth of 8.1% was recorded.
  • Robust performance in manufacturing, construction and service sectors, as well as good farm output, contributed to the overall growth.

Andhra Pradesh gets new state bird, state flower

  • The Andhra Pradesh government has announced to residual its state symbols for its own separate identity.
  • Now, the state bird of Andhra Pradesh state is Rama Chiluka (psittacula krameri) or rose ringed parakeet.
  • Earlier, the state bird of undivided Andhra Pradesh was Indian Roller (coracias benghalensis) or Palapitta.
  • Now, Palapitta is the state bird of ‘Telangana’, Odisha and Karnataka.
  • The Andhra Pradesh government has opted for jasmine as the state flower.
  • The Telangana government has adopted native Tangidi Puvvu (senna auriculata) as the state flower as it is widely used in the state’s famous Bathukamma festival.
  • Blackbuck (antilope cervicapra) or Krishna Jinka has been retained as the state animal.

Google India introduces ‘Neighbourly’ app to solve local queries

  • Google India has come up with the beta launch of a new app called ‘Neighbourly’ in the country to help people find local answers in their neighborhood.
  • A beta version of the app is initially available in Mumbai.
  • The objective of the app is to provide an outlet to local communities to seek answers to practical questions about local life, routine and more.
Note: ‘Neighbourly’ app will help to find queries to questions such safest park in an area or any affordable tutor available nearby.

Ministry of Railways organizes a one-day workshop ‘Mission Raftar’

  • Ministry of Railways conducted a one-day workshop “Mission Raftaar” aimed at raising the average speed of freight trains and coaching trains in New Delhi.
  • All the members of Railway Board along with General Managers of Zonal Railways & Senior Railway officers were present on the occasion.
  • The main objective of ‘Mission Raftar’ is doubling the average speed of freight trains and increasing average speed of coaching trains by 25kmph over a five-year period.

CWG gold medallist weightlifter Sanjita Chanu fails a dope test

  • According to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Indian weightlifter Sanjita Chanu (two-time Commonwealth Games champion) has tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid.
  • Sanjita has been provisionally suspended.
  • Recently, she had won a gold in the women's 53kg category in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
