International Biodiversity Day being observed today

  • The International Biodiversity Day is observed on 22nd May every year to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
  • The theme this year is, 'Celebrating 25 Years of Action for Biodiversity'.
  • The day marks the 25th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity and to highlight progress made in the achievement of its objectives at the national and global levels.

Vice President Naidu lays foundation stone for NIDM’s Southern Campus in AP

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu laid the foundation stone for the Southern Campus of National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) at Kondapavuluru in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh.
  • NIDM would become a Centre for excellence in the future and save people from cyclones and other disasters.
  • National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) is a premier institute for training and capacity development programs for managing natural disasters in India.
  • NIDM also serves as international SAARC Disaster Management Centre (SDMC) and works as focus for its operation and planning.

Finance ministry ties up with 40 entities for extending loans to small entrepreneurs

  • According to the finance secretary Rajiv Kumar, the finance ministry has tied up with 40 entities (including Flipkart, Swiggy, Patanjali and Amul) for extending loans to small entrepreneurs under the Mudra scheme.
  • The ministry will organize an event in Mumbai on 23rd May 2018 to extend loan under the scheme.
  • These companies will identify people who need loans under Mudra Yojana, underwrite them and we will extend loans under the scheme.
  • PMMY was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 8, 2015, for providing loans of up to Rs 10 lakh to the non-corporate, non-farm small/micro enterprises.
  • Last fiscal the government has extended Rs 2.53 lakh crore credit under the Mudra Yojana, while Rs 5.73 lakh crore has been extended in last 3 years.

NSDM aims to train over 40 crore people by 2022: Dharmendra Pradhan

  • According to the Union Petroleum and Skill Development Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, National Skill Development Mission (NSDM) aims at training over 40 crore people in the country in a wide range of skills by 2022.
  • The Mission is training people in different skills ranging from industrial welding, industrial electrician to computer data application course.
  • Mr. Pradhan has taken an initiative of setting up several SDIs in different parts of the country - Vizag, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Guwahati and Raebareli.
  • The mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015.


5. Telugu writer Yaddanapudi Sulochana Rani passes away

  • Popular Telugu novelist Yaddanapudi Sulochana Rani (78-year) passed away at California in the USA.
  • Sulochana Rani along with her women counterparts Arikepudi Kousalya Devi and Ranganayakamma, heralded a new era in Telugu fictional literature since the 1950s.
  • Some of Sulochana's famous novels include Murali Krishna, Radha Krishna, Jeevana Tarangalu, Premalekhalu, Secretary, Aathmeeyulu to name a few.

Venezuela's President Maduro wins re-election

  • According to the National Electoral Council, Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro was re-elected for a second six-year term in presidential elections.
  • Maduro won 68% of the vote in Sunday's election, far ahead of his nearest rival.
  • Around 14,638 voting centers have been set up nationwide for Venezuela's more than 20.5 million eligible voters (also voting for state legislators).
  • In 2013, he had replaced Hugo Chavez after his death from cancer.
  • Earlier, Mr. Nicolas served under Minister of Foreign Affairs (2006 to 2013) and as Vice President of Venezuela (2012 to 2013).
  • The President of Venezuela is the head of state and head of government of Venezuela.
  • The president is also the commander-in-chief of the National Bolivarian Armed Forces of Venezuela.

71st World Health Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland

  • The 71st World Health Assembly was held in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • The Union Health Minister Mr. J P Nadda led the Indian Delegation at World Health Assembly.
  • The Event was held under the theme "Health for All: Commit To Universal Health Coverage".
  • Mr. Nadda will also be inaugurated ‘Walk the Talk’ event and gave a call ‘Health for all, Yoga for all’.

Union Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan leaves for Sweden

  • The Union Minister for Environment, Forest, Science and Technology Dr. Harsh Vardhan is leading an Indian delegation for participation in the Mission Innovation Ministerial at Malmo in Sweden.
  • The ‘Mission Innovation’ is a global platform of 23 countries and European Union aimed at accelerating clean energy innovations through enhanced Government funding, greater public-private sector partnership, and enhanced global cooperation.
  • The Minister will also explore opportunities for research cooperation with Mission Innovation countries for affordable clean energy innovations.
  • Dr. Harsh Vardhan will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Denmark, Sweden, Canada and European Commission.
Note: India is a founding member of Mission Innovation and part of the Steering Committee besides co-lead of innovation challenges on smart grids, off grids and sustainable biofuels.

India successfully test- fires BrahMos from Integrated Test Range in Odisha

  • India successfully test- fired supersonic cruise missile ‘BrahMos’ from the Integrated Test Range in Balasore, Odisha as part of service life extension programme.
  • The life extension test firing of BrahMos was conducted from a Static Inclined Launcher, proving the efficacy and longevity of the system.
  • BrahMos is a joint venture between DRDO and NPOM of Russia.
  • The highly versatile BrahMos has emerged as the ultimate weapon of choice in modern warfare with its unmatched speed, precision and firepower.


Lionel Messi wins European Golden Shoe for the 5th time

  • Argentine professional footballer Lionel Messi, 31-year (plays for Spanish club FC Barcelona) Lionel Messi received his fifth Golden Shoe award for leading all of Europe's leagues in scoring last season.
  • Messi claimed the prize after scoring 34 goals in La Liga this season, helping his club to a 25th league triumph.
  • Earlier, Messi has taken the honors in 2010 (34-goals),2012(50 goals),2013(46 goals) and 2017.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo finished ninth in the rankings after scoring 26 goals for Real Madrid in La Liga.
