‘Vibrant North East 2018’ held in Guwahati

  • The three-day ‘Vibrant North East 2018' event to disseminate information about the schemes, grants, and projects of the Central Government was held in Guwahati, Assam.
  • Players from the agriculture, food processing, consumer affairs, civil supply, drinking water and sanitation sectors participated in the event.
  • The event is organized by Delhi-based NGO, Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD).

India slips 3 notches to 11th spot in AT Kearney FDI Confidence Index

  • India has slipped by three spots to 11th position in the FDI Confidence Index 2018 of global consultancy firm A T Kearney.
  • The US remained in the top position for investment intentions with Canada rising to the second position while Germany fell to the third.
  • India fell out of the top 10 for the first time since 2015.
  • According to report, investor preference for the Asia Pacific region appears to have “declined slightly”, with only seven Asian countries appearing on this year’s Index.

India into world's top five defense spenders

  • India has joined the U.S. and China as one of the world’s five biggest military spenders in 2017, reflecting geopolitical tensions as well as the country’s reliance on imported weapons and sprawling personnel costs.
  • India’s defense spending rose by 5.5% to USD 63.9 billion in 2017.
  • According to the arms watchdog, the five top military spenders in 2017 were the US, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and India.

Women and Child Development Ministry holds the National Conference of 244 Districts

  • The Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi has attended the day-long National Conference of 244 Districts under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) in New Delhi.
  • The Conference will provide an opportunity for experience sharing and will motivate the new districts to plan and execute the programme successfully.
  • These 244 Districts from across the country will be covered under Multi-Sectoral Intervention.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the All India expansion of BBBP scheme in 640 districts across the country.

EAM Sushma Swaraj chairs an interactive session on Act East Policy

  • Today, the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has chaired an Interactive Session on the Act East Policy in New Delhi.
  • This meeting will further underscore his vision of keeping the Northeast at the heart of India’s Act East Policy and the ongoing engagement with the ASEAN.
  • Chief Ministers of the eight North Eastern States have been invited to attend this meeting.
  • Senior officials from the Ministries of Road Transport and Highways, Commerce, and Industry, Civil Aviation, Home Affairs and External Affairs has also attended the meeting to provide a comprehensive policy view.

Ashok Lahiri appointed the full-time member of 15th Finance Commission

  • Former chief economic adviser ‘Ashok Lahiri’ has been appointed as the full-time member of the 15th Finance Commission.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Lahiri's appointment as the full-time member.
  • He will be accorded the status of the Minister of State.
Note:
  • In November 2017, The Fifteenth Finance Commission of India (XV-FC) has been constituted to give recommendations for five fiscal years commencing on 1 April 2020.
  • The main tasks of the commission were to "strengthen cooperative federalism, improve the quality of public spending and help protect fiscal stability".

Indian-American woman appointed interim civil court judge in the US

  • Indian-American Deepa Ambekar (41-year) has been appointed as the interim judge to a US civil court of New York City.
  • She has become the second Indian-American woman judge in the city after Raja Rajeswari (Chennai-born).
  • Earlier, Ms. Ambekar worked for three years with the New York City Council.

Karnataka: BJP sitting MLA passes away in Bengaluru

  • Sitting MLA from BJP Vijay Kumar (60-year) (Jayanagar, in Karnataka) passed away in Bengaluru due to cardiac arrest.
  • He was contesting the Assembly election for the third time.
  • The Election to the Jayanagar Constituency is likely to be countermanded due to the death of the candidate from a national party.

India-born girl’s heart disease project wins an award in Singapore

  • Chennai-born girl Vijayakumar Ragavi (18-year) has won this year’s A*Star Talent Search award in Singapore for her study of genetic heart disease “hypertrophic cardiomyopathy”.
  • She topped the list of 611 other students from the secondary and tertiary institution.
  • Ms. Ragavi designed a humanized hypertrophic cardiomyopathy model that recapitulate the disease phenotype.
  • An arrhythmia is a group of conditions where the heartbeat is irregular, too slow or too fast.
  •  A*STAR Talent Search is rewarding students who have performed well in scientific research.
  • It is part of the A*STAR Graduate Academy (AGA)’s Youth Science outreach to schools with the aim to inspire & sustain a passion in science in the young in Singapore.

Mohamed Salah named writers' Footballer of the Year

  • Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah (25-year) has been named the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year.
  • He has scored 31 goals in 34 league appearances for Liverpool this season.
  • Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne came second with Tottenham striker Harry Kane third.
  • Chelsea and England forward Fran Kirby won the inaugural FWA Women's Footballer of the Year award.

Wimbledon champions' prize money hiked by £50,000

  • According to the Wimbledon officials, the 2018 men's and women's singles champions will receive £2.25 million (an increase of £50,000 on last year).
  • An increase of 10% across qualifying and the first to fourth rounds of the singles, boosting the overhaul prize money total to £34 million this year.
  • The Australian Open's £31 million and this year’s French open around £34.5 million.
  • The US Open is yet to announce this year's total prize money.
  • Wimbledon, which starts on 2 July this year.

  • Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament (still played on grass) in the world and is widely regarded as the most prestigious.
  • It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877 and is played on outdoor grass courts.
  • Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open.
