International Labour Day being observed today

  • The 'International Labour Day' is a celebration of laborers and the working classes, promoted by the international labour movement, anarchists, socialists, and communists.
  • It takes place every year on 1st May which also matches with the Celtic spring festival.
  • The day marks the victory of workers' movement for eight hours of work. It also aims to pay tribute to workers sacrifices in achieving economic and social rights all over the world.
  • The theme of International Labour Day 2018 is “Uniting Workers for Social and Economic Advancement”.
  • The date was chosen for International Workers' Day by the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on 4th May 1886.
Note: Labour Day is known as Kamgar Din (Hindi), Karmikara Dinacharane (Kannada), Kamgar Divas (Marathi), Uzhaipalar dhinam (Tamil), and Thozhilaali Dinam (Malayalam).

Gujarat & Maharashtra celebrates its 58th foundation day today

  • Today, the two states Gujarat and Maharashtra are celebrating 58th foundation day.
  • In 1960, two western states Gujarat and Maharashtra were formed from erstwhile Bombay state on this day.
  • The Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani has inaugurated the ‘Sujalam Sufalam Yojana’ from Komsadi Talav.
  • Every year the Government of Maharashtra issues a notification declaring the 1st of May to be a public holiday to be celebrated as Maharashtra Day.
  • The day is marked with various cultural events and ceremonies showcasing the culture and traditions of Maharashtra.

Obituaries

Former IAF chief Idris Hasan Latif passes away

  • Former Chief of Air Staff ‘Air Chief Marshal Idris Hasan Latif’(94-year) passed away in Hyderabad after a brief illness.
  • Air Chief Marshal Latif was appointed as the Chief of Air Staff on 31 August 1978 and he remained in saddle till 1981 when he retired.
  • He has also become the first Muslim Chief of Air Staff of the Indian Air Force(IAF).
  • He subsequently served as the Indian Ambassador to France and the Governor of Maharashtra.

Former AIFF President P P Lakshaman passes away

  • Former President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) ‘P P Lakshmanan’ (83-year) passed away at Kannur in Kerala after a brief illness.
  • Lakshmanan was the first Indian to be chosen as the member of FIFA's appeal committee (Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010 editions).
  • He had also served as Kerala Football Association president.

Indian and Malaysian armies begin Exercise Harimau Shakti 2018 in Kuala Lumpur

  • The troops of the Indian and Malaysian armies kick-started 'Exercise Harimau Shakti 2018' in Kuala Lumpur.
  • Both armies stand to hone their tactical & technical skills in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations under the UN mandate.
  • This is the first-ever joint Army exercise between the armies of India and Malaysia.

Uday Kotak redesignated as MD & CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank 

  • The board of directors of Kotak Mahindra Bank has redesignated Uday Kotak as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer(CEO).
  • Earlier, Mr. Kotak was Executive Vice Chairman and Managing Director (MD).
  • Kotak was the only official among private banks to have a Vice Chairman designation (others have MD & CEO designation).
Note:
  • Kotak Mahindra Bank is an Indian private sector bank headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
  • In February 2003, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) gave the license to Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd. to carry on banking business.

Swachh Bharat Summer Internship commences today

  • The three-month Swachh Bharat Summer Internship commences from today and ends on 31st July 2018.
  • The objective of the programme to encourage millions of youngsters across the country to the Swachh Bharat Mission in the spirit of a true Jan Andolan.
  • Under the internship, all interns who complete at least 100 hours of sanitation-related work in villages would be given a Swachh Bharat certificate.
  • The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in association with Ministry of Human Resource Development and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has launched a novel and first of its kind initiative.
Note:
  • Students can sign up for the Swachh Bharat Summer Internship by logging on to the portal www.sbsi.mygov.in.
  • Those who complete the internship with additional, specified outputs would also gain two curriculum credits specially allowed by University Grants Commission(UGC).
  • Top performers would receive awards at the College and University, District, State and National Level.

8. ACI projects India as the second fastest growing country for air passenger traffic in the world

  • According to the Airports Council International (ACI) traffic forecast, India has been projected to be the second fastest growing country in the world for air passenger traffic.
  • ACI has put Vietnam at the top position with an 8.5% growth rate, followed by India at 7.5% and Iran at 7.3%.
  • China has been placed at the 8th position with 5.9% growth rate.
  • Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi among the top twenty busiest airports in the world.
  • Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai were ranked among the fastest growing airports in the world during 2017.

  • Airports Council International (ACI) (Established in 1991) is the only global trade representative of the world’s airport authorities.
  • It aims to provide the public a safe, secure, efficient and an environmentally responsible air transport system.

9. Dadasaheb Phalke film foundation awards 2018 announced

  • Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar bagged the best actor awards at the Dadasaheb Phalke awards, given by Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation, held in Mumbai.
  • Bollywood Actress Bhumi Pednekar bagged the best actress award for the film ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’.
  • Veteran director & actor Rakesh Roshan has been given the lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the industry as an actor, producer, and a director.

10. BCCI to honor Diana Edulji with CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) panel has recommended, the two-time national coach Anshuman Gaekwad (former India batsman) and the late Pankaj Roy (former opener), for the prestigious Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • The panel has also nominated former India women's team captain Diana Edulji, and coach Sudha Shah for the BCCI Lifetime Achievement Award (Women).
  • The three-member committee, comprising CK Khanna (Acting President), Amitabh Choudhary (Acting Hon. Secretary) and N Ram (eminent journalist).
  • The committee has recommended Abbas Ali Baig, late Naren Tamhane and late Budhi Kunderan for the BCCI Special Award.
