World Liver Day being observed today

  • The World Liver day is observed on the 19th April every year to spread awareness about the second largest organ ‘liver’ in the body.
  • This year, the theme of World Liver Day 2018 is 'Riding New Waves in Liver Diagnosis, Staging & Treatment'.
  • Liver diseases can be caused by hepatitis A, B, C, alcohol, and drugs.
  • According to WHO (World Health Organization), liver diseases are the 10th most common cause of death in India.
  • The liver is one of the most important organs of the body as it performs a wide range of very vital functions.
  • In humans, it is located in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, below the diaphragm.

Venkaiah Naidu launches Assam govt's cashless health scheme

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has launched “Atal Amrit Abhiyan”, a health scheme of the Assam government that offers free medical care of up to 2 lakh rupees for every individual from Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Above Poverty Line (APL) families.
  • The Atal Amrit Abhiyan will cover 92% of the state's population with annual income below 5 lakh rupees.
  • It is estimated that the number of Indians falling below the poverty line due to health spending run as high as 6.3 crore.
  • The Assam govt. has earmarked 400 crore rupees for the scheme in the financial year 2018-19.

UP govt orders govt hospitals and orphanages to establish SHISHU SWAGAT KENDRA

  • The Uttar Pradesh Govt. has ordered all govt hospitals and orphanages to establish SHISHU SWAGAT KENDRA ‘PALNA’ and put up cradles in front of their buildings so that parents can give up unwanted babies safely.
  • This will help in tackling the problem of abandoning the infant at the roadside.
  • The 'Palna' scheme will also help bridge the gap between the number of children available for adoption and the burgeoning list of adoptive parents.
  • The cradles will be fitted with a bell by which the staff can be alerted to the arrival of the child.
  • Then the baby can be taken to the local child welfare committee and screened further to evaluate if it is fit for adoption.

Aadhaar: UIDAI introduces new QR code for offline verification

  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced an updated 'QR code' that holds non-sensitive details like name, address, photo, and date of birth, and can be used for offline user verification without the 12-digit ID number.
  • QR code is a form of barcode label which contains machine-readable information and provides an extra layer of privacy to Aadhaar.
  • Aadhaar holders can download and print their biometric ID with the QR code from the website of Unique Identification Authority of India or its mobile app.
  • The offline QR code will allow everyone to establish their identity through offline verification without giving out Aadhaar number.
  • UIDAI does not permit any Requesting Entity (RE) to collect and analyze Aadhaar data and use the same for any commercial uses.


Indian animation expert Bhimsain Khurana passes away

  • Indian animation pioneer Bhimsain Khurana (82-year) passed away while undergoing dialysis at a hospital in Mumbai.
  • He known for films like ‘Gharaonda’ (got Film fare Awards) and for iconic animation shots like”Ek Anek Ekta’ (won him a National Award ) with the unforgettable “ Ek Chidiya akek chidiya” song.
  • In 1970, he made his debut with his first animation short “The Climb”, which earned him the Silver Hugo Award in the Chicago Film Festival.
  • This was followed by two other successful films “Doooriyan” and “Tum Laut Aao”.

Rajasthan BJP MLA Dharampal Choudhary passes away

  • Dharam Pal Choudhary (64-year) passed away at a hospital in Gurugram.
  • He was and suffering from a liver problem for some time.
  • He was the sitting BJP MLA from Mundawar in Alwar, Rajasthan.

GITC -2018 to be held in New Delhi

  • The GITC (Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities)- 2018” will be held during 8th to 11th November 2018 in New Delhi.
  • Around 300 participants including 120 Youth with disabilities from 24 Asia Pacific countries will participate in the invent.
  • This competition is amongst four categories of disabilities namely, Physical, Visual, Hearing and Intellectual.
  • As per MoU (Memorandum of Understanding), both the parties have agreed to cooperate in making all arrangements for the successful events in providing all necessary financial, logistics, manpower and other facilities.
Note: GITC is being held every year in Asia- Pacific region and such events were held in the past in countries like Korea, China, Thailand, Vietnam etc.

PM Modi takes part in Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken part in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London.
  • The summit's focus is on addressing common challenges across the Commonwealth for a more prosperous, secure and sustainable future.
  • The theme of the summit is ‘Towards a Common Future’. 
  • The biennial event has brought together delegates from 53 commonwealth nations.
Note: The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is a biennial summit meeting of the heads of government from all Commonwealth nations.

SBI India's most trusted bank

  • According to the TRA Brand Trust Report 2018, State Bank of India (SBI) has topped the charts and become the most trusted bank in the country (both private and public sector) in the Banking and Financial Services Institutions (BFSI) sector.
  • ICICI Bank is spotted in the top slot among private sector lenders exclusively.
  • SBI tops the chart of BFSI super-category despite seeing a dip in its overall brand trust index rankings from 13th (in 2017) to 21st (in 2018).
  • 51 brands from the Banking and Financial Services Institutions sector got listed among the 1,000 most trusted brands in the country this year.

NABARD approves Rs. 14,690 Cr funding to Rajasthan

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has extended total credit support of Rs 14,690 crore to Rajasthan for 2017-18.
  • Earlier, NABARD disbursed concessional loan of Rs 1,851.29 crore to the state government during 2017-18.
  • NABARD provided financial assistance of Rs 12,240 crore as refinance to banks for supplementing the financial resources of the banks in Rajasthan.
  • The Rajasthan government had waived off loans of up to Rs 50,000 taken by farmers from the cooperative banks
