BANKING & ECONOMY
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched Ombudsman Scheme for non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) for redressal of complaints against NBFCs registered with RBI under section 45-IA of the RBI Act, 1934.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed banks to link SWIFT (Society for World Interbank Financial Telecommunication System platform) with their core banking solutions (CBS) by April 30, 2018.
  • The first sale of electoral bonds will start from Mar 01, 2018 for a period of 10 days at four main branches of State Bank of India in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and New Delhi.
  • Digital payments startup, Paytm launched two insurance companies, Paytm Life Insurance and Paytm General Insurance.
  • The regulator National Housing Bank (NHB) has approved the merger of the Capital First along with Capital Home Finance and Capital First Securities Limited with IDFC Bank.
  • Retirement fund body Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has reduced the interest rate on deposits to 8.55 percent for the financial year 2017-18 following a general decline in interest rates.
  • The Union Cabinet approved the creation of Rs. 60,000 crores National Urban Housing Fund (NUHF) to finance Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) constituted a new 5-member expert Committee headed by Y H Malegam, a former member of the Central Board of Directors of RBI, to look into the reasons for wide divergence by banks in asset classification, provisioning and measures to prevent frauds.
  • Technology giant Google has launched new payments app called Google Pay in order to take on Apple Pay.
  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has announced area development plans worth Rs 1,918 crore for Punjab to supplement farmers' income.
  • Amazon has become the first foreign e-commerce firm to start its own food retail venture in India called Amazon Retail, piloting its services in Pune.
  • The online payment service provider, PhonePe partnered with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for adoption of its indigenously-designed Point of Sale (POS) device at IOCL retail outlets.
  • Milkbasket, India's first and largest micro-delivery platform has been recognised as 'Startup of the Year' 2017 at the 7th Small Business Awards. Anant Goel is the CEO of Milkbasket.
  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) allowed Facebook-owned WhatsApp to beta test its BHIM UPI beta payments service with limited user base of 1 million and low transaction limit.
NATIONAL NEWS
  • India will be hosting the first International Solar Alliance (ISA) summit in Mar 2018 in New Delhi.
  • India contributed $1 million aid in Tonga for rehabilitation efforts after island was hit by Tropical Cyclone Gita which had caused massive destruction across the pacific ocean archipelago.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Palace Queen Humsafar Express between Mysuru and Udaipur in Mysuru Railway Station.
  • The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) has organized a National Conference under the title of “Agriculture 2022 – Doubling Farmers’ Income” at National Agriculture Science Complex (NASC), Pusa, New Delhi.
  • India ranked 81st out of 180 countries in the global Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2017, released by Transparency International (TI) in which New Zealand topped the list.
  • The Union Ministry for Development of North-East Region (DoNER) is setting up the ‘NITI Forum for North-East’ to identify constraints and recommend suitable interventions for speedy and sustainable growth in North East Region (NER).
  • Northeast India’s first regional Centre for Agriculture is to be inaugurated in Mizoram in March 2018.
  • The Union Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare launched six new features of National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) Platform to make it more users friendly.
  • The six new features are e-NAM Mobile App, BHIM payment facility, new and improved Website with eLearning Module, MIS Dashboard, Grievance Redressal Management System for Mandi Secretaries and Integration with Farmer Database.
  • The Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation launched Gangotri Swachh Iconic Place project and Swajal, a community owned drinking water programme in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand.
  • The Govt constituted Empowered Expert Committee (EEC), headed by former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N Gopalaswami, to select 20 Institutions of Eminence from among 104 institutions (public or private) that have applied for the status.
  • The Union Minister of State (IC) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh has inaugurated the international R&D Conclave’ in New Delhi, aimed on Emerging Opportunities and Challenges of R&D in Indian Power Sector.
  • The Parliament House is setting up crèche facility on its premises for establishing inclusive and supportive work environment for its women employees.
  • According to the UNICEF latest report, India has been ranked 12th-worst among 52 low-middle income countries based on the number of children dying within the first month of their birth, which is 25.4 per 1,000 live births.
  • Japan, with an NMR of 0.9 deaths per 1,000 live births, has been ranked the world's safest country in which to be born followed by Iceland (1) and Singapore (1.1).
  • The Gandhi Nagar railway station in Jaipur has become the country’s first major railway station to be fully-managed by women.

  • The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, J P Nadda addressed the Global Digital Health Partnership Summit, at Canberra, Australia.
  • The Union Govt formulated ambitious water conservation scheme, Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABY) to tackle ever-deepening crisis of depleting groundwater level for which Rs 6,000-crore has been piloted by the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation.
  • According to report of Census Directorate, 42 languages or dialects in India are considered to be endangered and are believed to be heading towards extinction as only few thousand people speak them.

  • The Delhi govt launched “Mission Buniyaad” for improving learning skills of children studying in state and municipal-run schools.
  • The International Conference on Sustainable Biofuels (ICSB-2018), jointly organized by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India on behalf of Mission Innovation and Biofuture Platform, held in New Delhi.
  • The 7th edition of the Youth Festival started with theme “Let Love Live” at Central Park in New Delhi.
  • The Kerala govt has recently made vaccination compulsory for school admissions to Class 1 from the 2018-19 academic year.
  • A Centre for Agriculture, with the collaboration of Israeli expertise, is going to be inaugurated in Mizoram in March 2018.
  • The 44th edition of Khajuraho Dance Festival 2018 held at Khajuraho temple, a UNESCO world heritage site in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar presented in the state assembly a Rs 17,123-crore budget for 2018-19, an increase of 6.84 per cent over the ongoing fiscal, with a stress on education and job creation.
  • The Haryana govt officially launched the Parivartan scheme, which is designed to address 10 issues including cleanliness and pollution, in 46 developmental blocks of the state.

  • The Haryana govt opened four subsidised canteens in four districts under the ‘Antyodaya Aahaar Yojana’ to provide healthy, nutritious and hygienic food at affordable prices to all poor and needy persons.

  • 2018 India International Textiles Expo (IIT Expo) started in Sri Lankan capital of Colombo.
  • The World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT-2019) is going to be held in Yerevan, Armenia.
  • The member countries of TAPI, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India ceremonially broke ground on Afghanistan section of ambitious, multi-billion dollar TAPI gas pipeline.
  • Venezuela has become the first sovereign country to officially launch its own cryptocurrency called Petro backed by oil, gas, gold and diamond reserves to circumvent US-led financial sanctions.
  • Singapore would impose a carbon tax from next year to cut its greenhouse gas emissions and make companies more competitive as global agreements on climate change take effect.
  • Saudi Arabia has allowed women to open their own businesses and benefit from govt e-services without having to prove consent from husband or male guardian.

  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave approval for the procurement of BMP-2 infantry combat vehicles for Indian Army and survey training vessel for Indian Navy at cost of Rs. 1, 850 crores.
  • The 6th edition of annual joint military exercise, ‘Garuda Shakti-2018’ has been started between Indian and Indonesian Army in Bandung, Indonesia.
  • Scientists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru indigenously developed the country’s first super critical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton Test Loop facility.
  • India has successfully conducted a night trial of its indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile with a strike range of 350 km, from a test range in Odisha.
  • India’s indigenous developed light transport aircraft SARAS PT1N successfully completed second test-flight.
  • India successfully test-fired its medium range nuclear capable Agni-II missile with a strike range of 2,000 km from Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast.
  • Scientists confirmed discovery of nearly 100 new exoplanets outside our solar system based on data from second mission of NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope (K2 mission) released in 2014.
  • Pakistan Army announced to deploy troops in its close ally Saudi Arabia under existing bilateral security cooperation agreement.

  • A constituent industrial unit of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Heavy Water Board (HWB) signed an collaborative agreement with Clearsynth, Mumbai for sale of 20 tonnes of Heavy Water in year.
  • The Telangana Govt signed a technology partnership agreement with the Taiwanese city of Taoyuan to facilitate learning and knowledge sharing in emerging technologies and their implementation at the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) 2018 in Hyderabad on Feb 21.
  • The Govt of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $84 million loan for improvement and expansion of water supply in Bhagalpur and Gaya towns in Bihar.
  • The Uttar Pradesh govt signed 1,045 Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) amounting to proposed investments worth Rs 4.28 lakh crore at UP Investors Summit 2018 in Lucknow.
  • The summit was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and gave 4-P mantra: Potential, policy, planning and performance which leads to progress.
  • State-owned telecom firm, BSNL and Japan’s NTT AT along with their Indian partner Virgo Corps, signed a MoU to collaborate in futuristic technologies such as artificial intelligence/IoT and jointly create a 5G test bedan agreement to collaborate in developing futuristic technologies.
  • Uttar Pradesh's Khadi and Village Industries Board signed a pact with Amazon India to facilitate online selling of Khadi products.
  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved methodology for auction of coal mines/blocks for sale of coal to private sector under Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 and Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.
  • The CCEA approved construction of 4.531 km long 2-Lane Bi-Directional Silkyara Bend-Barkot Tunnel in Uttarakhand as part of ‘Chardham Mahamarg Pariyojana’.
  • The Union Cabinet approved Cooperation Agreement between India and Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF) to develop long-term cooperation and partnership in different areas of railway sector.
  • The Union Power Ministry extended waiver of inter-state power transmission charges and losses for solar and wind power projects commissioned till 31 March 2022 in order to give boost to clean energy sources.
  • United Kingdom and India launched joint research projects on ‘Water Quality Research’ and ‘Energy Demand Reduction in Built Environment’.
  • Maharashtra Govt has signed an intent agreement with the Virgin Group led by Richard Branson to build world’s first hyperloop transportation system between Mumbai and Pune.
  • The Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and UK’s Natural History Museum (NHM) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in field of genetic and taxonomic studies, research and training, conservation in India, including species and habitat conservation assessments.
