BANKING & ECONOMY
  • According to the World Bank’s latest report, "India Development Update – India’s Growth Story" India’s GDP growth projected at 7.3% for FY 19 (2018-19) and is expected to accelerate further to 7.5% in 2019-20.
  • The Union Govt inked $120 million loan agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB) for completion of projects to improve Rail Infrastructure along high-density corridors and operational efficiency of Indian railways.
  • The ICICI Bank launched instant overdraft ‘InstaOD’ facility for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in a completely online and paperless manner in which customers will be able to get overdraft facility up to Rs 15 lakh for a year anytime, anywhere using the bank’s Internet and mobile banking app.
  • The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) inked an MoU with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for increased cooperation in effective implementation of insolvency law.
  • India’s FDI reaching US $208.99 billion foreign direct investment (FDI) during April 2014 to Dec 2017 period.
  • The GST Council headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley approved the rollout of inter-state e-Way bill, which will deferred the liability to pay tax on reverse charge mechanism until June 30 and extended tax exemption benefits to exporters for another six months.
  • The passport details will be made mandatory for availing loans more than Rs. 50 crore from state run banks as it looks to tighten procedures following the detection of Rs. 12, 636 crore scam at Punjab National Bank (PNB).

  • The 2-days Informal World Trade Organisation (WTO) ministerial meeting started in New Delhi.
  • The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) launched its lost and found mobile application for passengers at 59 airports across India.

  • The Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) bagged the award for best implementation of E-office.
  • India’s tallest national flag at 9, 600 sq. ft on a 110 m flag pole unfurled in Belagavi (also known as Belgaum) in Karnataka by Ramesh Jarkiholi, District in-charge Minister.

STATE NEWS
  • President Ram Nath Kovind released Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 10 commemorative coins on the occasion of Nabakalebar festival in Puri, Odisha.
  • The Ministry of AYUSH will organise the 2018 International Yoga Fest at the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga in New Delhi which is a curtain raiser for the 2018 International Yoga Day to be celebrated on June 21.
  • The first-ever India-Japan Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction, organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Govt of Japan, inaugurated by the Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog, Dr. Rajiv Kumar in New Delhi.
  • The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) given environmental clearance to India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) project to be set up in Bodi West hills in Tamil Nadu.
  • The Haryana becomes third state after Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to unanimously passed Criminal Law (Haryana Amendment) Bill, 2018 providing for death penalty for convicts found guilty of raping girls aged 12 years or less.
  • The Odisha govt is going to collaborate with Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES) for strengthening its early warning services and enhancing preparedness for management of hazards in state.
  • Jaipur is going to co-host 8th Theatre Olympics, the largest international theatre festival being held for the first time in India.
  • The Maharashtra Govt banned use of plastic in time-bound manner, citing environmental and public health concerns.
  • Arunachal Pradesh Assembly passed Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Bill 2018 to do away with the Anchal Samiti, the intermediate level of the three-tier panchayati raj system and set up a two-tier system in the state.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS
  • Philippines becomes the second country after Burundi to withdraw from International Criminal Court (ICC) citing reason of international bias and held that ICC was being utilised as a political tool against it.
  • United Nations agencies and NGO partners released a 2018 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis, with a $951 million appeal to meet the urgent needs of nearly 900,000 Rohingya refugees.
  • The US Trade Representative (USTR) challenged Indian export subsidy schemes at World Trade Organisation (WTO), saying these programmes harm its manufacturing sector and workers by creating an uneven playing field.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has inaugurated World Hindi Secretariat building in Port Louis, Mauritius.

SCIENCE & DEFENCE
  • The first phase of Indo-French joint naval exercise ‘Varuna 2018’ kick-started at the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) in Vasco, Goa on Mar 19.
  • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) commissioned interceptor boat ICGS C-437 at Porbandar, Gujarat as part of its efforts to strengthen coastal security.
  • The Chinese scientists developed artificial heart using rocket technology and are currently undergoing thorough testing experiments on animals.
  • The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) has undertaken development of coded drug AYUSH QOL-2C for improving quality of life in cancer patients.
  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) for the very first time flawlessly landed its largest transport US-manufactured aircraft, C-17 Globemaster at strategic Tuting Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) in Arunachal Pradesh, which is close to Chinese border.
  • The Scientists from Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered new species of water strider named Ptilomera nagalanda Jehamalar and Chandra in Nagaland.
  • The first multilateral Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise of Indian Air Force (IAF), Samvedna 2018 in association with South Asian Region nations held off the coast of Kerala.
  • Russia has successfully launched high-precision aeroballistic Kinzhal hypersonic missile from a MiG-31 supersonic interceptor jet.

  • Anjaneya Seva Samiti in collaboration with Talk India Foundation celebrated the Festival of Democracy in Jaipur, Rajasthan on Mar 17, 2018 to discuss developmental dialogues relevant to democracy in the country.
  • The Member Countries of the World Health Organization-Regional Office for South-East Asia (WHO-SEARO), participating in Delhi End Tuberculosis (TB) Summit adopted ‘Delhi End TB Summit Statement of Action’.
  • The Union Government approved proposal to institute Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Police Investigation.

  • According to the recently released report by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, India ranked at 133 among 156 countries in World Happiness Index 2018, which was topped by Finland.
  • India ranked at 78 among 114 countries on World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Energy Transition Index (ETI) released as part of report titled Fostering Effective Energy Transition. (Sweden topped the index)
