Australia lifted Sultan Azlan Shah cup 2018

  • Australia defeated defending champions England in the final to lift the Sultan Azlan Shah cup 2018 title.
  • The final was played at Ipoh, Malaysia.
  • Australia defeated England by a narrow 2-1 margin.
  • With this title, Australia now won the title for the 10th
  • India finished at fifth place after defeating Ireland in the classification match.
  • Argentina placed at 3rd place and Malaysia finished at 4th

India B clinched Deodhar Trophy 2018

  • India B clinched the 45th edition of the Deodhar Trophy by defeating Karnataka in the final.
  • The final match was played at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
  • Deodhar Trophy was named after Prof. D. B. Deodhar who was known as the Grand Old Man of Indian cricket.

Navjot Kaur ranked no. 2 spots in World Wrestling

  • Asian Champ Navjot Kaur ranked at number 2 spot in the United World Wrestling rankings.
  • She ranked at world No 2 in the women's 65 kg category in the latest rankings.
  • She became the first Indian woman to clinch the gold medal at the Asian Championship in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
  • In the 50kg category, Vinesh Phogat ranked at the second spot.
  • In the 59kg category, Sangeeta Phogat ranked at the fifth spot in the world rankings.
  • Olympic champion Sakshi Malik ranked at no. 4 in the 62 kg category.

Tejaswin Shankar creates new National Record in High Jump

  • Tejaswin Shankar created a new National Record to claim the gold medal at the 22nd Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships.
  • He broke his own national mark of 2.26m and sets a record at 28m.
  • The Delhi boy has now booked his seat for the Commonwealth Games.

National Affairs

PM Modi, Macron inaugurate UP's largest solar power plant

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated the 75 MW solar power plant in Mirzapur.
  • It is the largest solar power plant in Uttar Pradesh.
  • The solar power plant has been built in the with French solar power giant Engie Solar at Dadar Kala, Mirzapur.
  • The plant will generate 15.6 crore units of electricity annually, about 1.30 crore units per month.

Suresh Prabhu gets additional charge of Civil Aviation Ministry

  • The present Union Commerce and Industries minister Suresh Prabhu was given additional charge of the Civil Aviation Minister.
  • The decision was taken after the after the resignation of TDP’s Ashok Gajapathi Raju was accepted by President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • The President, as advised by the Prime Minister, has directed that Suresh Prabhu, Cabinet Minister, shall be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, in addition to his existing portfolio.

Now passport mandatory for bank loans of Rs. 50 crore & above

  • In the wake of recent frauds, the government has made providing passport details mandatory for taking loans of 50 crore rupees and above.
  • The main aim of this decision is to ensure a swift action in case of fraud and prevent fraudsters from fleeing the country.
  • Now for all existing loans of over 50 crore rupees, banks have been asked to collect passport details of borrowers within 45 days. 

India’s First Coastal Policing Academy Set up in Gujarat

  • The Union Home Ministry Country’s has approved to set up the country’s first Coastal Policing Academy in Gujarat.
  • This will be India’s first institution to safeguard the nation’s shoreline.
  • The National Academy of Coastal Policing (NACP) will start functioning from April 2018.
  • The NACP will be managed by a multi-agency team of paramilitary and defence forces.
  • It will train the marine forces of states, which have sea lines.

Mumbai & Delhi named world’s best airports in the global passenger survey

  • Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) of Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport of Mumbai has emerged as the world’s best airport in the global survey.
  • As per Airports Council International (ACI) ASQ 2017 rankings Mumbai tied with Delhi for the top position among airports handling over 40 million passengers annually.
  • Beijing and Shanghai Pudong have been ranked second.
  • India has the highest number of awards. China is second (six airports), followed by Indonesia (4).

China makes historic move to allow Xi to rule indefinitely

  • The parliament of China has passed a constitutional amendment lifting presidential term limit.
  • With the changes in China’s basic law, Chinese President Xi Jinping can now serve as President indefinitely.
  • Chinese lawmakers emphatically recommended changes in the constitution, which would empower President Xi Jinping to weather headwinds that challenge China’s new stage of transition.
  • During the vote, a total of 2,964 members of the National People’s Congress (NPC) voted on constitutional amendments.
  • Only two opposed a proposal that removes the limit on the tenure of the President to two consecutive five-year terms.

 Summits

First International Solar Alliance summit held in New Delhi

  • The first International Solar Alliance summit was held in New Delhi.
  • The summit was co-hosted by President Ram Nath Kovind and his French counterpart President Emmanuel Macron.
  • The heads of 23 nations and 10 ministerial representatives participated in the summit.
  • The aim of the summit is to deliberate on a finance mechanism for the promotion of solar energy in member countries, crowd-funding and technology transfer.
  • During the summit, it was pledged to generate 175 gigawatts (GW) of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2022, including 100 GW from solar and 60 GW from the wind.
About ISA
  • The International Solar Alliance (ISA) was launched jointly by India and France following the Paris Declaration at the UN Climate Change Conference on November 30, 2015.
  • The International Solar Alliance was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then French President Francois Hollande.
  • There are 121 prospective member countries and territories of ISA, out of which close to 90 countries have signed the ISA Framework Agreement.
  • The ISA is the first international body that will have a secretariat in India.
  • ISA headquarter is in Gurugram, Haryana.

 India wins Best Exhibitor Award at ITB – Berlin

  • India won the Best Exhibitor Award at ITB-Berlin World Tourist Meet.
  • The ITB-Berlin World Tourist Meet was held in Berlin.
    Tourism Minister K. J. Alphons represented India at the meeting.
  • A short film named "Yogi of the Racetrack" India's Incredible was presented by India during the meet.
  • The short film got 3.2 million hits in 60 hours.

Defence

'MILES -18' multi-nation naval exercise held at Andaman sea

  • The first-ever multi-nation naval exercise ‘MILES-18’ at sea was held at the Andaman sea.
  • It was a three-day naval exercise which was conducted as part of the 10th edition of MILAN 2018.
  • 11 naval ships of 8 countries (Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand) and nine Indian ships participated in the event.
About Milan 2018
  • It is a multi-national mega event which was organised by Andaman Nicobar naval command.
  • The theme of this year event is ‘Friendship Across the Seas’.
  • The aim of the event is to develop regional cooperation and combat unlawful activities in critical sea lanes.

Russia successfully launches new Kinzhal Hypersonic Missile

  • According to the Russian defence ministry, Russia successfully launched its new hypersonic Kinzhal missile.
  • The new missile was launched from a MiG-31 supersonic interceptor Aircraft.
  • The Kinzhal has a strike range of 1,200 miles (2,000km) and can travel at 10 times the speed of sound.
