  • China has constructed Xian smog tower, an experimental air purifying tower touted to be the world’s biggest at height of over 100 meters (328 feet) in an attempt to fight air pollution.
  • Bangladesh, India and Nepal have  given  nod  to  operating procedures  for  movement of  passengervehicles in the sub-region under Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) motor vehicles agreement (MVA).
  • Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has signed Letters of Intent (LoI) with Phinergy, an Israeli start-up company, and YEDA, a technology spin-off company from Weizmann Research Institute, Israel.
  • Nepal started receiving the internet connection from China after the commercial operation of Nepal-China optical fibre link via Rasuwagadhi gateway across Himalayan Mountains.

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched weather observation satellite Cartosat 2 Series and 29 other spacecraft into the space from its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-40 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The 13th edition of joint military drill exercise “Iron Fist 2018” started between American and Japanese forces at Camp Pendleton in California on Jan 12 and will continue till Feb 12.
  • Drug price regulator, National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has fixed retail price for 30 drug formulations, including those used for treatment of diabetes, bacterial infections and high blood pressure.
  • The Indo-US joint military exercise, ‘Vajra Prahar’ is held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) in Seattle in third week of January in line with the increasing military cooperation between both countries.
  • India’s first automatic Early Warning Dissemination System (EWDS) will be commissioned in Odisha by March 2018.
  • Indigenously developed long-range surface-to-surface Agni-5 ballistic missile was successfully test fired from Abdul Kalam Wheeler Island, Odisha.
  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has cleared procurement of 72,400 assault rifles and 93,895 carbines on fast track basis for Rs 3,547 crore to enable the Defence Forces to meet their immediate requirement for the troops deployed on the borders.
  • Researchers from Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) discovered a new species of moth, scientifically named Elcysma Ziroensis from Talley Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh.
