National Girl Child Day being observed today

  • The National girl child day is celebrated every year on 24th January as a national observance day for the girl child.
  • The day promotes the girls position in the society to make their living better among society people.
  • National girl child day has been started as a national girl development mission by the Government of India.
  • This mission raises the awareness among people all over the country about the importance of girl’s promotion.

Uttar Pradesh foundation Day being celebrated today

  • Today, Vice President M Venkaiya Naidu has inaugurated the celebrations of the Foundation Day (68th) of the Uttar Pradesh (UP) at Awadh Shilp Mela ground at Lucknow.
  • On 24th January 1950, the state renamed as Uttar Pradesh, (earlier United Provinces during British rule).
  • Several programs and cultural events are also being organized in all 75 districts of the State.
  • UP Government has announced a policy of one district one product to promote minimum one product from each and every district.

National Appointments

FICCI appoints Dilip Chenoy as Director General

  • The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) has appointed ‘Dilip Chenoy’ as its Director General (DG).
  • Earlier, he was Chairman of Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology and Member, Board of Advisors, IILM.
  • He was awarded the Game Changer Award in 2015 and the Rashtriya Media Ratan Award.

  • FICCI is an association of business organizations in India.
  • It is the largest, oldest and the apex business organization in India, headquartered in New Delhi.

Hugh Masekela, 'Father of South African Jazz' Passes Away

  • Legendary South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela (78-year) passed away after a decade-long fight with cancer.
  • He was married to South African singer and activist Miriam Makeba for two years.
  • Masekela (Father of South African jazz) inspired generations of musicians in jazz and beyond and collaborated in recent years with South African house music DJ Black Coffee and others.

Former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit pens autobiography

  • According to the publishers Bloombury India, Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit is coming out with her autobiography, "Citizen Delhi: My Times, My Life".
  • The autobiography will be unveiled on 27th January at the 11th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival.
  • She will take readers on the lifelong journey of Delhi's longest serving chief minister (from 1998 to 2013).
  • Dikshit made her debut in electoral politics in 1984 as a member of the Indian National Congress, contesting and winning from the Kannauj parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Tamil Nadu CM Palaniswami receives UNESCO Award

  • The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K Palaniswami has received the UNESCO Award of Merit awarded to the iconic Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple in Tiruchirapalli.
  • The award of merit is being awarded by Unesco Asia Pacific region for the reconstruction activities undertaken in the temple without in the least affecting its traditional splendour and Vedic rituals.
Note:
  • The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Ranganatha, a reclining form of the Hindu deity Vishnu, located in Srirangam, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu.
  • The temple tops the list among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu.
  • The temple complex, situated in a sprawling ground of more than 156 acres.

National Affairs

AYUSH Minister Lays foundation stone for Homeopathy Research Institute in Jaipur

  • The Minister of State (IC), for AYUSH, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik has laid the foundation stone for Central Research Institute (CRI) in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
  • This will be the third CRI under the aegis of Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) with 23 institutes across the country.
  • The institute is also contributing to the Swasthya Rakshan Program at five adopted villages i.e. Chharsa, Kumbhawas, Sakatpura, Khoraladkhani, Hanutpura.
  • According to Naik Homoeopathy research institute at Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), Lucknow(UP) and Siliguri (West Bengal) are in the pipeline.

India to host 16th International Energy forum meet

  • According to the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan, the 16th International Energy Forum (IEF) Ministerial meeting will be held in New Delhi in April 2018.
  • The meeting will be hosted by Government of India (GoI) and co-hosted by the Government of China & South Korea.
  • Around 92 countries (72-members countries of IEF and 20 guest countries) will be participating in the conference.
  • In 1996, India had hosted the IEF ministerial conference.

7th Asia Steel International Conference to be held in Bhubaneswar

  • The 7th Asia Steel International Conference, a platform for the exchange of knowledge on various aspects of the global steel industry will be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha in February 2018,
  • This major conference is held every three years.
  • Around 70 speakers from different countries will participate in the conference.
  • Earlier in 2015, Asia Steel conference was held at Yokohama, Japan.

Rakhi Halder creates new national record in Women Senior National Weightlifting Championships

  • Lifter Rakhi Halder (Railways Sports Promotion Board) created a new national record in clean and jerk en route to a gold medal in the 63kg women's category in the 33rd Women Senior National Weightlifting Championships, in Mangaluru.
  • She lifted 128kgs in the clean and jerk for a total of 230 kgs to create a new national record, bettering Karnam Malleswari's feat (127kg) created in Athens in 1999.
  • The silver in this category went to S Thasana Chanu of Karnataka (202kg) while the bronze was clinched by AIPSCB's Amandeep Kaur (191kg).
