1. (a) Hassan Rouhani
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on 3 December 2017 inaugurated the first phase of the Chabahar port on the Gulf of Oman. Pon Radhakrishnan, Minister of State for Shipping, represented India at the inauguration ceremony of the Phase 1 of the Shahid Beheshti Port at Chabahar.

2. (c) International Maritime Organisation

India re-elected to the International Maritime Organisation Council during the assembly of the body at its headquarters in London on 1 December 2017. India with 144 votes won the second-highest number of votes, from member countries, closely behind Germany’s 146. Indian High Commissioner to the UK, YK Sinha represented India at the assembly.

3. (a) 6.0 per cent
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has kept the repo rate unchanged at 66.0 per cent and reverse repo at 5.756.0 per cent in its fifth bi-monthly monetary policy review for the year 2017-18 as it feared that inflation may top the central bank’s medium-term target of 46.0 per cent.

4. (c) Russia
The International Olympic Committee on 5 December 2017 banned Russia from competing at next year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The ban follows an investigation into allegations of state-sponsored doping at the 2014 Games hosted by Russia in Sochi. However, Russian athletes who can prove they are clean would be allowed to compete in the tournament but under a neutral flag.

Wassenaar Arrangement (WA), key export control regime, on 7 December 2017 decided to admit India as its new member. The decision was taken during the two-day plenary meeting of the Wassenaar Arrangement grouping in Vienna. 

6. (b) Kumbh Mela
The Kumbh Mela has been inscribed on the UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ at its 12th session in Jeju, South Korea on 7 December 2017. This inscription is the third in two years for India following the inscriptions of yoga and Nouroz.

To allow the same-sex marriage, the Australian Parliament voted for same-sex marriage bill with majority, following a bitter and divisive debate settled by the government polling voters in a much-criticised ballot survey that strongly endorsed the change.

8. (a) The Silence Breakers
Time magazine named ‘The silence breakers’ its Person of the Year for 2017 referring to those individuals, mostly women, who came forward this year to publicly expose patterns of sexual harassment and assault by powerful public figures in America like Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Ashley Judd was the first actress to come forward on the record to make accusations against the 65-year-old Weinstein.

9. (b) New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the BR Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi to encourage research and original thinking among the youth. The purpose of the centre is to promote the thoughts and teachings of Dr Ambedkar.

US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced plans to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
