Nation Celebrates Kisan Diwas: 23rd December

  • Kisan Diwas (Farmer's Day) is observed every year on 23 December to celebrate the birth anniversary of the fifth prime minister of India Chaudhary Charan Singh. 
  • He was the PM of India from 28th of July 1979 until 14th January 1980. 
  • Chaudhary Charan Singh never visited the Lok Sabha as the Prime Minister of India.
  • He also served as the Deputy Prime Minister during the reign of Morarji Desai.

Kumi Naidoo is next Secretary General of Amnesty International

  • The human rights activist of South African Kumi Naidoo (52-year) has been appointed as the next Secretary General of Amnesty International.
  • In August 2018, he will take over from Indian activist Salil Shetty (since 2010).
  • Mr. Naidoo born in Durban was formerly International Executive Director of Greenpeace.
  • He was also the Founding Chair of the Global Call to Action against Poverty and Secretary General and CEO of CIVICUS, the World Alliance for Citizen Participation.
Note: Amnesty International is the largest human rights movement globally, with a global presence including offices in more than 70 countries, 2,600 staff and seven million members, volunteers and supporters worldwide.

Lt Gen B S Sahrawat takes over as Director-General of NCC

  • Lieutenant General B S Sahrawat took over the reins of National Cadet Corps as its Director General.
  • The General Officer is a third generation army officer.
  • He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
  • He was commissioned in December 1980 in 13th Battalion (Rezang La), the Kumaon Regiment. He has been awarded the Sena Medal during the floods of Kosi River in Bihar in 2008.
  • The National Cadet Corps is the Indian military cadet corps with its Headquarters in New Delhi, India.
  • It is open to school and college students on voluntary basis.

351st birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Govind Singh to begin today in Patna

  • Today, three-day Prakash Parv, 351st birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Govind Singh (10th Guru of Sikhs) has begun at the Takhat Harimandir Shaeb(birthplace of Guru Govind Singh) at Patna City, Bihar.
  • A makeshift Gurudwara and Durbar Hall has been made at Tent City where the Akhand Path, Shabad Kirtan, and other religious rituals take place.
  • More than 4 lakh devotees are expected to visit the place.
  • The celebrations have been nomenclatured Shukarana Samahroh, marking the concluding ceremony of the 350th birth anniversary of warrior Guru, which began January this year.

Bengali singer Jatileswar Mukhopadhyay passes away

  • Bengali singer Jatileswar Mukhopadhyay (82-year) has passed away in Kolkata due to prolonged illness.
  • In 2012, West Bengal government had conferred him with the Sangeet Samman award.
  • Among his popular numbers were E kon sakal, Tomar Sange Dekha Na Hole, Aamar Swapan Kinte Paare and Bondhuya Amar Chokhe Jal Enechhe
Note: Mukohpadhyay had learned music under the guidance of doyens of Bengali light classical music Chinmoy Lahiri and Sudhin Dasgupta, carved his own individual style, which enriched Bengali music in the 70s-80s.

Patanjali ranked India's most trusted FMCG Brand

  • Indian FMCG company, Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. has been ranked as India's most trusted Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Brand by the Brand Trust Report India Study 2017.
  • In a study covering 11,000 brands across 16 cities by The Brand Trust Report India Study 2017, Patanjali has been declared as the most attractive brand.
  • The Patanjali Ayurved Limited was established in 2006 by Ramdev, along with Acharya Balkrishna, with the objective of establishing science of Ayurveda in accordance and coordination with the latest technology and ancient wisdom.
  • Patanjali’s manufacturing units and headquarters are located in the industrial area of Haridwar while the registered office is located at Delhi.

Bengaluru to host 7th International Coffee festival

  • India Coffee Trust in association with the Coffee Board has announced the 7th India International Coffee Festival(IICF) to be held from 16th to 19th January 2018 in Bengaluru.
  • It is an excellent platform to showcase ‘Coffees of India’ to the global coffee buyers.
  • The festival will comprise of International Conference Exhibition for all things coffee, Skill-building workshops, Product launches, Coffee Quiz, Coffee Awards, Golf Championship, CafĂ© Crawl.

India's first design University Opens in Haryana

  • India's first design university 'World University of Design' opened its campus at Sonipat, Haryana.
  • The University is promoted by Om Parkash Bansal Educational and Social Welfare Trust of Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab.
  • WUD is India's first university dedicated to education in the creative domain.

Govt to launch 'Ganga Gram' project at Ganga Gram Swachata Sammelan

  • The Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister Uma Bharti has launched the 'Ganga Gram' project at the Ganga Gram Swachata Sammelan in New Delhi.
  • The Ganga Gram project is an integrated approach for the holistic development of villages situated on the banks of the holy river with the active participation of villagers.
  • Earlier, union govt. declared all 4,470 villages on the banks of the Ganges, located in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, open defecation-free (ODF).
  • The project envisages solid and liquid waste management, renovation of ponds and water resources, water conservation projects, organic farming, horticulture, and promotion of medicinal plants.

Birmingham to host Commonwealth Games in 2022

  • Birmingham will host the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
  • Earlier, the 2022 Commonwealth Games were originally given to Durban (South African city)in 2015, but the city was stripped of the event because of financial difficulties.
  • The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.
  • Although there are 52 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, 70 teams participate in the Commonwealth Games, as a number of dependent territories compete under their own flags.
