Union Government initiates ‘Safe City’ Plan for women in 8 metropolitan cities.

  • Home Ministry announced that under the Safe City plan, a robust emergency response system, as well as a police, verified public transport system will come into place.
  • This safe city plan, which was reviewed by Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba,  will be implemented in implemented in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Lucknow and Hyderabad.

5th global conference on Cyberspace inaugurated by Prime Minister

  • Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 5th edition of Global Conference on Cyber Space (GCCS) in Delhi.
  • ‘Cyber4All: A Secure and Inclusive Cyberspace for Sustainable Development’ is the theme of the two-day conference.
  • The conference will be attended by 33 Ministerial Delegates from 31 countries and representatives from about 124 countries of the world. Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremasinghe, will also attend the conference.
  • This conference aims to promote the importance of inclusiveness and human rights in global cyber policy.
  • The inception of GCCS took place in 2011 in London. The second meet was held in Budapest in 2012, third in Seoul in 2013 and the fourth in The Hague, Netherlands in 2015.

Shubhangi Swaroop to become the first woman pilot in the Indian Navy.

  • Indian Navy has inducted Shubhangi Swaroop as its first woman pilot.
  • A native of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Shubhangi was the first of the 328 cadets who passed out from the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kannur.
  • Shubhangi would now undergo training for the pilot at Dundigal Airforce Academy in Hyderabad.
  • Apart from Shubhangi, 3 other women cadets who passed from the academy, A. Roopa (Puducherry), Astha Sehgal (Delhi) and S. Sakthimaya (Thiruvananthapuram) would join the Armament Inspection Division.

Union Cabinet grants approval to set up the 15th Finance Commission.

  • The 15th Finance Commission will look into the distribution of tax proceeds among centre, states and local bodies post GST.
  • The commission will be set up for a period of 5 years and the 2017-18 budget of the commission is Rs. 10 crores.
  • The members and chairperson of the 15th Finance Commission are yet to be finalised.
  • However, the recommendations of the 14th Finance Commission, headed by former RBI Governor Y. V. Reddy, will be valid until 2020.
  • The cabinet also provided its approval for the wage revision in Central Public Sector Enterprises.

Government constitutes a task force to draft New Direct Tax Legislation

  • The committee has been formed to look into the tax systems of the different countries of the world and will submit its report in 6 months.
  • CBDT Member (Legislation), Arbind Modi will act as the convener of the committee and its other members include Rajiv Memani (Chairman and Regional Managing Partner of EY), Girish Ahuja (Chartered Accountant), Mukesh Patel, Mansi Kedia (Consultant, ICRIER) and GC Srivastava are the members of the task force.
  • A permanent special invitee status has been given to Chief Economic Advisor, Arvind Subramanian in the task force.

Union Cabinet grants approval for India’s Membership of European Bank for Reconstruction & Development.

  • The Department of Economic Affairs under Ministry of Finance will now take necessary steps to acquire the membership of EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction & Development).
  • This membership is expected to enhance the economic interests of our country and also strengthen India’s international profile.
  • Approximately one million euros is the minimum initial investment for the membership of EBRD.

'Umang App' launched by Prime Minister. 

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an all in one 'Umang App' at the Global Conference on Cyber Space, as an initiative to promote Digital India Program. 
  • UMANG stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance and can be downloaded by the people to avail various Government services. 
  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and National e-Governance Division (NeGD) have together developed this app. 
  • The app provides 162 services from 33 state and central government departments and four states. 

Agreement between India and Philippines on customs matters approved by the cabinet.

  • An agreement for cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters between India and Philippines has been approved by the Union cabinet for signing and ratification.
  • The pact aims to make available the relevant information that will help in the prevention and investigation of the Custom offences.
  • It will be expected to assist the facilitation of trade between the two countries and also ensure the efficient clearance of traded goods.

Forbes lists Beyonce as the highest paid woman in Music for 2017.

  • Popular singer, Beyonce has topped the list of the ‘World’s highest-paid woman in Music’ released by Forbes for 2017, with $105 million pretax.
  • Adele stood second in the list, earning $69 million and Taylor Swift grabbed the third spot with total earnings of $44 million.

Government approves an agreement on cooperation for combating terrorism between India & Russia.

  • The agreement was approved in a cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The approved agreement is expected to be signed during Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh’s upcoming visit to Russia from 27th to 29th November 2017.
  • The agreement would involve exchange and sharing of information, expertise, best practices and would assist in combating terrorism and improving the security of the region.

114 countries launch urgent action to eradicate Tuberculosis by 2030: WHO

  • The announcement was made at WHO’s first global ministerial conference on ending tuberculosis, held in Moscow.
  • WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called the day as a critical landmark in the fight to end TB, when delegates from 114 countries agreed to take urgent action to eradicate the disease.

Latin America named the most violent region in the world for Women.

  • UN Women and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in a report presented in Panama found Latin America and the Caribbean as the most violent region in the world for women.
  • Central America and Mexico were named as particularly dangerous places in the report.
  • As per the report of the United Nations, Latin America and Caribbean’s 24 countries out of 33 countries have laws against domestic violence. However, only 9 of them have passed legislation that handles a range of forms of other violence against women in public or private.
