Children's Day: 14th November

  • Children’s Day is celebrated on 14th November every year on the birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru also called 'Chacha Nehru'.
  • Children's Day is celebrated across India to increase awareness of the rights, care, and education of children.
  • Political leaders and eminent persons have paid tribute to him at his Samadhi, Shanti Vana in New Delhi.
Note: Children's Day (Bal Divas) was first celebrated in 1964 after the death of Pandit Nehru.

37th India International Trade Fair begins in New Delhi

  • Today, the 37th edition of India International Trade Fair (IITF) has been inaugurated by the President Ram Nath Kovind at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
  • This year the theme of the fair (IITF-2017) is "Startup India Standup India".
  • First four-day of the fair will be restricted to business and trade visitors for which the entry ticket will be 500 rupees.
  • For the general public, the fair will open from 18th of November to 27th November (9:30 AM to 7:30 PM).
  • The general tickets will cost Rs. 60 and 40 for adults and children respectively on working days, ticket prices will increase to Rs. 120 and 60 on weekends.
  • Around 7,000 participants from 22 countries will showcase their products ranging from electronics to textiles.
  • This year over 7,000 participants from 22 countries are taking part in the fair and the Partner Country is Vietnam while the Focus Country is Kyrgyzstan.
  • Jharkhand is participating as a Partner State in the event.
Note: The 2017 IITF has been organized by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), under the aegis of Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Rathore releases India Youth Development Index and Report 2017

  • Youth and Sports Minister Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has released the India Youth Development Index and Report 2017 in New Delhi to track the trends in youth development across the States.
  • The Index enables the policymaker tracked the national and the regional progress as well setbacks in youth development policies, planning, priority identification and implementation strategies.
  • Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu has come out with Youth Development Index and Report 2017.

India’s 1st Tribal Entrepreneurship Summit to be organized at Dantewada

  • Today. India’s first Tribal Entrepreneurship Summit has been inaugurated by Minister of State for Science & Technology YS Chowdhary at Dantewada, Bastar (Chhattisgarh) to inspire, nurture and promote the spirit of entrepreneurship in tribal youth.
  • The event is a part of 8th Global Entrepreneurship Summit being held in India, organized by NITI Aayog in partnership with the US government.

Notification for 1st phase of Gujarat Assembly elections issued

  • The notification for the first phase of Gujarat state Assembly elections has been issued by the Election commission.
  • The last date for nomination is 21st of November and withdrawal of candidature is 24th of this month.
  • In the first phase, the polling will be conducted in 89 of the 182 Assembly constituencies on the 9th December.
  • The counting of votes will be taken up on the 18th of next month along with Himachal Pradesh.
  • VVPAT will be used in all the polling stations.

World Diabetes Day being observed today

  • Today, the world Diabetes Day being observed marks the birthday of the man who co-discovered insulin, Frederick Banting.
  • The day initiated by International Diabetes Federation aims to promote better diabetes management amongst people across the globe who are or have been suffering from the condition.
  • Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar either because of the inability of the body to produce enough insulin or the inability to respond to the insulin so produced.
  • Insulin is a critically important medication for individuals with Type 1 diabetes.
Note: In 2007, General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/61/225 designating 14 November as World Diabetes Day.

Former Nepal PM Kirti Nidhi Bista passes away

  • Former Nepal's Prime Minister Kirti Nidhi Bista (90-years) passed away in Kathmandu.
  • Bista is survived by two sons and three daughters.
  • Bista served three times as Prime Minister from 1969 to 1970, 1971 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979.

10th South Asia Economic Summit (SAES) begins in Kathmandu

  • Today, the three days 10th South Asia Economic Summit (SAES) has begun in Kathmandu for discussing and analyzing economic and development issues and challenges faced by South Asian countries.
  •  The summit is being organized by National Planning Commission and Ministry of Commerce of Nepal and South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics, and Environment, Nepal.
  • The theme of the summit is "Deepening Economic Integration for Inclusive and Sustainable Development in South Asia".
  • Around 200 participants including ministers, members of parliament, former MPs, ambassadors, government officials, researchers, eminent experts, and thinkers will attend the summit.
Note: SAES is being organized at the joint initiative of National Planning Commission and Ministry of Commerce, Nepal in collaboration with South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics, and Environment (SAWTEE).

Air India gets Rs 1,500-cr loan from Bank of India

  • Air India (AI) has received a loan worth of Rs 1,500 crore from Bank of India to meet urgent working capital needs.
  • Earlier, the airline had borrowed around Rs 3,250 crore as short tenure loans from two lenders IndusInd Bank and Punjab National Bank (PNB).
  • The Air India group flies to 44 overseas and 75 domestic destinations.
Note: Air India is the flag carrier airline of India, owned by Air India Limited, operates a fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft serving 90 domestic and international destinations.

Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal retires from all cricket

  • Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket at the end of the ongoing National Twenty20 tournament.
  • Ajmal took 178 wickets (35 Tests), 184 wickets (113 ODIs), and 85 wickets (64 T20Is).
  • Earlier, Ajmal remodeled his bowling action a couple of years back after it was called for suspect action.

Italy fail to qualify for FIFA World Cup

  • The four-time champions, Italy national football team has failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1958.
  • Earlier, they lost the World Cup Qualifying European play-off against Sweden, 0-1.
  • With the win, Sweden has reached the World Cup for the first time since 2006.
  • Now, Italy will not be present in the competition for only the second time in their history.
  • In 1930, Italy football team had declined to play at the inaugural tournament.
