Girija Devi, Famous Thumri Singer passed away.

  • Girija Devi, the classical thumri singer passed away in Kolkata at the age of 88, after suffering a cardiac arrest.
  • Girija Devi was one of the prominent figures of Banaras and Senia Gharana.
  • She was also felicitated with Padma Bhushan award in 1989 as well as Padma Vibhushan award in 2016.

State Bank Recapitalisation Plan of 2.11 Lakh crores approved by the Centre.

  • The Union Government has approved a $32.43 billion (2.11 lakh crores) state bank recapitalisation over the next 2 years.
  • The move aims to clean the balance sheets of the banks as well as revive investment in the economy.

A Task Force for ‘Public Credit Registry’ set up by RBI.

  • A 10-member task force was formed by the Reserve Bank of India in order to build a comprehensive public credit registry to improve market efficiency.
  • Former head of L&T Finance Holdings, M. Deosthalee will be the head of this task force.
  • The other nine members of this task force are:
    (a) Sekar Karnam (DMD & Chief Credit Officer, SBI Member)
    (b) Sriram Kalyanaraman (MD & CEO, National Housing Bank Member)
    (c) Vishakha Mulye (ED, ICICI Bank Member)
    (d) Sharad Sharma (Co-founder and CEO, BrandSigma, iSPIRT Member)
    (e) Rashesh Shah (Chairman and CEO, Edelweiss Group Member)
    (f) Vivek Srivastava (Sr. VP - Research and Innovation, ReBIT Member)

The first Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra of India for Skilling in Smart Cities inaugurated.

  • The first ever Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) for Skilling in Smart Cities was inaugurated by Mr Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister along with Mr Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
  • This PMKK has been launched in collaboration with NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council), in order to bring momentum in skilling.
  • For the skilling initiatives, the PMKK would make use of the NDMC infrastructure. This PMKK-NDMC centre is located at Mandir Marg, New Delhi. It is spread in an area of about 30, 000 sq. ft. and has a capacity of skilling almost 4000 youth yearly.

Ministries of Power and Textile come together under the SAATHI Initiative.

  • The new SAATHI (Sustainable and Accelerated Adoption of efficient Textile technologies to Help small Industries) Initiative has helped Ministries of Textile and Power to join hands to assist the Small Scale Industries.
  • Office of the Textile Commissioner and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) will jointly implement the SAATHI Initiative across the country.
  • Energy efficient Powerlooms, Rapier kits and Motors would be procured by EESL in bulk under this initiative and will be provided to the small and medium units of the powerloom without any upfront cost.

Cabinet approves Rs. 7 lakh crores for the mega Highway Construction Plan.

  • A project worth Rs. 7 lakh crores has been approved by the Union Government to develop 83000 km highways in 5 years.
  • Finance Secretary, Ashik Lavasa announced that the project includes construction of 34800 km of highways under the Bharatmala Scheme, at the cost of almost Rs. 5.35 lakh crores

ISNV Tarini reaches Fremantle under the Navika Sagar Parikrama Expedition.

  • The all-women crew of the Indian Navy entered the Fremantle port of Australia under the Navika Sagar Parikrama Expedition from INNV Tarini.
  • This is the maiden voyage of ISNV Tarini to circumnavigate the globe.
  • Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi is the captain of the vessel, and the crew comprises Lieutenant Commanders Pratibha Jamwal, P Swathi, and Lieutenants S Vijaya Devi, B Aishwarya and Payal Gupta.

Robert Mugabe removed as the Goodwill Ambassador for NCDs in Africa by WHO.

  • The appointment of Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s President, as the Goodwill Ambassador for NCDs (Non-Communicable Diseases) in Africa has been cancelled by the World Health Organisation.
  • The appointment was revoked in light of the widespread outcry by Western Donors and Rights groups.

Nicaragua joins the Paris Climate Agreement.

  • Nicaragua signed the Paris Climate Accord, leaving behind US and Syria as the only two countries opposing the agreement.
  • The Vice-President and First lady of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo announced that the relevant documents have been presented at the United Nations.

Union Government appoints Dineshwar Sharma as its representative in the Jammu & Kashmir Talks.

  • Former director of Intelligence Bureau, Dineshwar Sharma has been appointed by the government as its interlocutor for Kashmir.
  • Sharma will help negotiate peace in insurgency-racked Kashmir.
  • Dineshwar Sharma is the 1979-batch IPS officer from the Kerala cadre.
