BANKING & ECONOMY

  • According to the Global financial services major HSBC, India’s economic growth is expected to remain flat at 7.1 per cent in the current fiscal.
  • The Reserve Bank of India issued 200 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series
  • on Aug 25, 2017, bearing signature of Dr. Urjit R. Patel, Governor, Reserve Bank of India. The new denomination has Motif of Sanchi Stupa on the reverse, depicting the country’s cultural heritage. The base colour of the note is Bright Yellow. Dimension of the banknote is 66 mm × 146 mm.
  • The Reserve Bank has also introduced new fluorescent Blue 50 denomination banknotes bearing the Motif of ‘Hampi with Chariot’ that depicts India’s cultural heritage. Dimension of the banknote is 66 mm x 135 mm.
  • The 17th Meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) was held in New Delhi under the Chairmanship of the Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley.
  • 21st GST Council meet will be held in Hyderabad on Sept 9. This will be the third meeting of the council since the launch of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on July 1 and the 21st since it was set up in September last year.
  • DHFL Pramerica Life Insurance Company has signed on Kerala-based Dhanlaxmi Bank as its bancassurance partner, under which the latter will distribute retail and group life insurance products to its customers across 260 branches in India.
  • The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog has launched Mentor India Campaign to engage leaders for guiding and mentoring students at Atal Tinkering Labs.
  • The nine-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of India JS Khehar in a landmark unanimous decision has declared Right to Privacy a Fundamental Right under the constitution.
  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved renaming of SAMPADA (Scheme for Agro-Marine Processing and Development of Agro-Processing Clusters) as Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) with the objective to supplement agriculture, modernize processing and decrease agricultural-waste.
  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved closure of Bharat Wagon and Engineering Company Limited (BWEL), a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under Ministry of Railways (MoR).
  • Software giant Microsoft has launched Project Brainwave, a deep learning acceleration platform for real-time artificial intelligence (AI).
  • A Reserve Bank of India appointed committee on Household Finance, chaired by Dr Tarun Ramadorai, has suggested that banks link their home loan rates to the RBI’s repo rate, the rate at which it lends to banks, instead of the Marginal Cost of Funds based Lending Rate (MCLR), which the banks follow now.
  • The largest merchant payment acquirer, HDFC Bank with over 40 per cent market share launched an all-in-one offering, DigiPoS Machine that offers a complete suite of digital payment solutions.
  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has given a nod to Spice Digital Ltd. for processing bill payments under the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) as a Bharat Bill Payment Operating Unit (BBPOU).
NATIONAL NEWS

  • The Revenue Dept. of Union Finance Ministry has imposed anti-dumping duty on certain “textured toughened (tempered) glass” imported from China, which aims at protecting the domestic industry from cheaper imports.
  • The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) launched ‘Swasth Bachche, Swasth Bharat’ Programme, an initiative of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), to prepare a physical Health and Fitness Profile Card for more than 12 lakhs of Kendriya Vidyalaya students.
  • The Union Ministry of Home Affairs launched Digital Police Portal under Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems Project (CCTNS) to provide services to citizens and aid efficient police investigation.
  • UIDAI has joined hands with CSC India for launching door step enrolment facility in the national capital for the elderly, patients and others who cannot travel the Aadhar centres.
  • The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in the Union Commerce Ministry has banned duty free imports of gold, silver items from South Korea.
  • The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry has constituted a Task Force, headed by Dr. V. Kamakoti, on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for India’s Economic Transformation.
  • The Parliamentary Standing Committee has recommended that no Genetically Modified (GM) crop should be introduced unless the biosafety and socio-economic desirability is evaluated in a transparent process.

  • Karnataka Govt has launched clouding seeding Project Varshadhari in Bengaluru under which an aircraft will spray chemicals to induce rainfall.
  • Odisha Govt has launched a grid-connected rooftop solar programme through net-metering system at
  • the State Secretariat in capital city of Bhubaneswar with aiming at harnessing renewable solar capacity through people’s participation to further strengthen the grid and reduce power losses and benefit the public.
  • Karnataka Agriculture Dept. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Microsoft India to develop a unique “farm price forecasting model” using latest IT tools in a bid to help farmers, administrators and other stakeholders to understand the market behaviour in advance.
  • Andhra Pradesh’s Eastern Power Distribution Company Ltd (EPDCL) and the Southern Power

  • China launched its first cyber (internet) court specialising in handling internet-related cases in the e-commerce hub of Hangzhou, amid a spike in the number of online disputes.
  • The first regional centre of the New Development Bank, set up by India and other BRICS nations, was officially opened in Johannesburg, South Africa by South African President Jacob Zuma and the bank’s Indian head K V Kamath.
  • The International Seabed Authority (ISA) in its 23rd session, recently held at Kingston, Jamaica, has extended India’s exclusive rights to explore polymetallic nodules from seabed in Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB).

  • Scientists of Los Alamos National Laboratory, US have discovered a potential new state of matter that may help explain phenomena like superconductivity. It was discovered in the high-magnetic-field state of the heavy fermion superconductor CeRhIn5.
  • US have discovered an inexpensive prevention technique (therapy) against sepsis in new born babies. The team was led by US-based Indian doctor Dr Pinaki Panigrahi.
  • Indian Navy’s second CU (landing craft utility) Mark IV L52 ship was commissioned at Port Blair, capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • United Kingdom (UK) have developed the world’s smallest surgical robot called Versius which was developed using low-cost technology used in mobile phones and space industries.
  • A 12-year-old Indian-origin boy, Rahul Doshi has been crowned the UK’s ‘Child Genius’ in a popular television quiz competition.
  • Indian scientists have discovered Nasikabatrachus bhupathi, a new species of frog that has a snout-shaped nose, just like a pig in West Ghats.
  • A Tri-Services band from the Indian Armed Forces participated and performs in the International Military Music Festival “Spasskaya Tower”, the parade of the best military music bands of Russia and other countries, takes place at Red Square in Moscow.

  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to deepen bilateral cooperation in telecom and broadcasting regulation.
  • India and Nepal have signed eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in various fields, including Housing grant, prevention of drugs, post-earthquake reconstruction packages in health and education sectors.
