Anita Karwal Replaces RK Chaturvedi as CBSE Chairperson

  • The union govt. has appointed Anita Karwal (IAS officer- Gujarat-cadre) as the Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
  • She will replace ‘Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi’ who has been moved to the National Skill Development Agency as Director General(DG).
  • The CBSE is a Board of Education for public and private schools, under the Union Government.
  • It affiliates all Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), all Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), private schools and most of the schools approved by Union Government.
  • It conducts the final examinations for Class 10 and Class 12 every year in the month of March and also declares the results.

Sunil Arora appointed new Election Commissioner

  • Former Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sunil Arora (61-year) will be the new the Election Commissioner of India.
  • Achal Kumar Joti is the CEC (Chief Election Commissioner of India), Om Prakash Rawat is the other Election Commissioner.
  • Election Commission of India is a permanent Constitutional Body established under Article 324 of the Constitution.
  • The body administers elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, state Legislative Assemblies in India, and the offices of the President and Vice President in the country.

Fiscal deficit touches 92.4% of budget estimates at July-end

  • The union govt. fiscal deficit at the end of July this year touched 92.4% of the budget estimate.
  • This was mainly because of front loading of expenditure by government departments.
  • The government's revenue receipts improved to 2.91 lakh crore rupees during the April to July 2017 period, which is 19.2% of the target for the whole year.
  • Revenue expenditure widened to 131.2% of the budget estimate, from 93% in the corresponding period last year.
  • The government aims to bring down the fiscal deficit to 3.2% of GDP in the current fiscal.
  • The fiscal deficit is the difference between the government's expenditure and revenue.

NDTV entitled to tax deduction on news software export: Delhi HC

  • The Delhi High Court upheld the findings of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) that NDTV Ltd was entitled to income tax deductions (under Section 80HHE of the Act) on television news software produced and exported by it outside the country.
  • Section 80HHE of the Income Tax Act provides for deduction in respect of profits earned from export of computer software etc if the firm brings convert table foreign exchange into the country within a period of six months from the end of the previous year.

Goa CM launches online Public Grievance Redressal System

  • The chief minister of Goa ‘Manohar Parrrikar’ has launched an online Public Grievance Redressal System at the state secretariat.
  • It is a single window online portal for citizens to register grievances towards any state govt. department.
  • The citizens will be notified about the status of their complaint through SMS and email based on a unique grievance ID.
  • There is a provision for automatically escalating unaddressed grievances to higher authorities periodically.

Government plans to create FarmerZone

  • The union Govt. has planned to create “FarmerZone”, a collective open-source data platform for smart agriculture.
  • It will use biological research and data to improve the lives of small and marginal farmers.
  • FarmerZone will help cater to all needs of the farmer from dealing with climate change, weather predictions and soil, water, and seed requirements.

Saab & Adani join hands for defence manufacturing

  • Saab (Swedish defence giant) and Adani group (Indian conglomerate) have announced a collaboration in defence manufacturing entailing billions of dollars of investment in New Delhi.
  • They mainly eyeing a contract for single-engine fighter jets for the Indian Air Force.
  • The project will encompass design, development, and production of Gripen jets for India in line with the Make in India initiative.

Ahmedabad formally accorded status of India's first World Heritage City by UNESCO

  • UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova handed over the certificate declaring Ahmedabad as a 'World Heritage City' to Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in Gandhinagar.
  • Earlier, in July the UN agency had inscribed Ahmedabad as India's first World Heritage City at a meeting held in Poland.

Odisha: Coast Guard launches aviation infrastructure including MMMA

  • Coast Guard launched an aviation infrastructure including a multi-mission maritime aircraft hanger,MMMA in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
  • This is part of the ongoing effort by the Coast Guard to strengthen the maritime and coastal security.
  • The newly launched aviation infrastructure would provide a fillip towards futuristic expansion plan of Coast Guard's air arm.
  • The Coast Guard air enclave is involved in undertaking air surveillance along Odisha and West Bengal coasts.

Gehlot launches scheme for senior citizens belonging to BPL category in Gujarat

  • Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment ‘Thaawarchand Gehlot’ has launched a scheme that provides for physical aids and assisted-living devices for senior citizens belonging to the BPL category in Gujarat.
  • This ambitious scheme is expected to benefit 5,20,000 senior citizens over a period of three years.
  • The centrally-sponsored scheme, `Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana', was unveiled on April 1 this year and since then it has already been launched in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.       
  • Under the scheme, devices were distributed to senior citizens free of cost.

Sports Ministry approves Constitution of 13- ESC

  • The Sports Ministry has approved constitution of a 13-member Empowered Steering Committee (ESC) to shape and influence India's preparation for multi- disciplinary events.
  • The Steering Committee will have the mandate to work till 31st December 2020 with clearly defined terms and references.
  • These include a review of the core probable list of each High Priority and Priority disciplines for the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Olympic Games.
  • The Committee will also have the power to recommend specific plans or packages for beneficiaries of Target Olympic Podium Scheme.
