Last Minute preparation Tips to Crack SSC CGL 2017 Tier-1

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will conduct CGL 2017 Tier 1 exam from 5 August 2017 till 24 August 2017. And there are less than 02 Days left for the exam. In this article, we will guide you with a Expert preparation strategy for the exam. But Before going through the preparation tips, let us have a look at the Exam Pattern of the SSC CGL 2017 Tier-1 Exam.

SSC CGL 2017 Tier-1 Exam Pattern:
Subject Total Questions Maximum Marks Total Duration
General Intelligence Reasoning  25 50 60 minutes
Quantitative
Aptitude
25 50
English Comprehension 25 50
General Awareness 25 50

Please note that each question carries a total of 02 marks and there is a negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer. The total duration of the exam has also been reduced from 75 minutes to 60 minutes.

Following are some tips as to what you can do in these remaining days before the exam.

Don’t start with any new topic

This is not a good time to even think about starting a new topic with just a few days in hand. Starting a new topic will only confuse you and leave you with no sufficient time for even completing that topic, let alone time for revision and practice time for other sections.

Plan out an effective Time Management Strategy

The total time duration for the SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam has been reduced to 60 minutes from 75 minutes which means you have to solve the four sections within 60 minutes. Therefore, according to your solving capability for each section, divide your time conveniently. We may suggest an ideal time-table as listed below:

Section
Time(In Minutes)
General Intelligence Reasoning
17
General Awareness
6
Quantitative Aptitude
25
English Comprehension
12
Total
60

Think beyond Cutoff marks

  • The Cutoff for SSC CGL 2016 Tier-1 exam was 137 for General category.
  • Whatever may be the minimum qualifying marks, don’t attempt the exam with the mindset of securing the Cutoff marks only.
  • Remember that the weightage of Tier-1 exam is also considered for the preparation of the final merit list. Therefore, you need to do your best for the exam.

Solve easy questions first

  • One of best methods to save some extra time is going for the easy questions first as there is no specific order in which you have to solve the different sections.
  • Trying to solve the difficult questions first might get you stuck in one particular question and you will lose more time instead.

Practice with mock tests

  • Before the SSC CGL 2017 Tier-1 exam, continue practicing and taking variety of SSC CGL mock test series.
  • Practice sectional mock tests apart from taking full length SSC CGL mock tests for Tier-1 Exam. You will get familiar with latest exam pattern and it will also enable you to manage your time.
  • Try improving your speed & accuracy as much as possible because time is a key player in determining your success or failure.

Be ready for surprises

  • The difficulty level of last year’s exam was somewhat moderate as per analysis. However, it’s not necessary that the exam pattern of 2017 will also be the same.
  • Mentally prepare yourself for any unexpected change in the difficulty pattern.
  • This will strengthen your mind to face challenges if the difficulty level of the exam rises.
  • Collect SSC CGL Tier-1 papers of past 5 years and solve all of them.
  • You can also solve model question papers which will further help enhance your competence level.

Revise Topics Properly

  • You need to do this ASAP. No need to pick up a new topic. Just go about it in the following manner.
  • Revise topics section-wise.
  • Dedicate few hours to each section, beginning with General Awareness first (you probably would’ve forgotten most of it by now).
  • Learn Direct Formulas and tables, squares, cubes, shortcut tricks etc. to reduce time allotted for calculation in Quantitative Aptitude Section.
  • Go for the challenging ones and see if there is any scope for improvement.
  • DO NOT pick up any new topic.

Follow a strict regime

  • Final Practice Run: SSC CGL Tier 1 Mock Test, Appear for an online mock test and ensure that you are moving ahead with the best exam strategy in mind.
  • Implement your strategy in this mock test and analyze the score achieved.
  • Focus on accuracy. Make sure that atleast 85% of the attempted questions are positively correct.
  • Compare scores achieved in the mock test with previous year cutoff marks and see if you land in the ‘safe zone’.
  • After detailed analysis of your performance, if your expected performance was not upto the mark, consider making tweaks in your strategy.

Keep Calm and Believe in Yourself

  • You need a calm mind to score well in SSC CGL Tier 1 Examination. Stop stressing about the so called ‘expected difficulty level’ of the examination.
  • If the difficulty level is tough, it will be everyone – not just you!
  • So stay calm during the time of examination and try to perform at the best of your abilities.
