75th anniversary of Quit India Movement -Nation celebrates 

  • Today, the nation is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement.
  • This year's theme is “SANKALP SE SIDDHI- the Attainment Through Resolve.
  • The Quit India Movement was an important milestone in the Indian freedom struggle.
  • The Quit India Movement (India August Movement) was a movement launched at the Bombay session of the All-India Congress Committee by Mahatma Gandhi on 8 August 1942, demanding an end to British Rule of India.


Justice Dipak Misra to be next Chief Justice of India

  • Supreme Court Judge, ‘Justice Dipak Mishra’ will be the next Chief Justice of India (CJI).
  • He will replace incumbent Justice J S Khehar (retire on 27th August).)
  • Justice Misra will be sworn in as CJI (45th) on 27th August 2017 and hold the post till 2nd October, 2018.
  • He enrolled at the Bar on 14 February 1977 and practiced at the Orissa High Court and the Service Tribunal.
  • The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the head of the judiciary of India and the Supreme Court of India.
  • As head of the supreme court, the chief justice is responsible for the allocation of cases and appointment of constitutional benches which deal with important matters of law.
  • Article 124 of the Constitution of India provides for the manner of appointing judges to the Supreme Court.


Dilip Chauhan appointed as Deputy Comptroller for Minority Affairs in New York

  • Indian-American ‘Dilip Chauhan’ has been appointed as the Deputy Comptroller for Minority Affairs of Nassau County, New York.
  • Deputy Comptroller for Minority Affairs focuses on increasing outreach to the minority communities in Nassau County.
  • The Comptroller’s Office has been a driving force in advocating for increased business opportunities for Minority and Women Owned Enterprises (MWBEs) to meet the County’s goals.
  • Mr. Chauhan has been active in numerous community including his role as Advisor to the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI).


BJP MP from Ajmer & former Union minister Sanwar Lal Jat passes away

  • Former Union minister and BJP's Member of Parliament (MP) from Ajmer ‘Prof Sanwar Lal Jat’ (62-years) passed away in New Delhi.
  • Prof Sanwar Lal Jat was the member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly for five terms and also served as Minister in the Rajasthan Government thrice.


Govt. forms panel to make drugs more affordable

  • The union govt. has constituted a committee of Joint Secretaries for ensuring enhanced affordability, availability, and accessibility of drugs for the citizens.
  • It will suggest ways to make pricing policy in favor of poor patients.
  • The committee would also review the scope of Drugs (Price Control) Order 2013 and suggest ways for strengthening the regulatory provisions of the order.


NITI Aayog announces partnership with six states to transform Health & Edu sectors

  • NITI Aayog has shortlisted Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Karnataka under its 'Sustainable Action for Transforming Human Capital', SATH initiative to handhold them and transform their health sector.
  • The Aayog has also selected Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Odisha under its SATH initiative to transform their education sector.
  • To give a major push to competitive, cooperative federalism, the government think tank had invited all states and Union Territories to participate in its SATH initiative to transform Health and Education sectors.
  • A Program Management Unit to push for efficiency and efficacy in governance structures and service delivery will now be available in the six chosen States for a period of 30 months.


Odisha govt. to provide land with a record to landless slum dwellers

  • Odisha cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will provide land with a record to the landless slum dwellers.
  • According to the decision, 600 square feet land will be provided in 112 Notified Area Councils while 450 square feet land would be provided in 107 municipal areas.
  • In corporation areas, govt. will provide houses to the slum dwellers.


J&K govt. to spend Rs. 1 lakh Cr on education and road connectivity

  • Jammu and Kashmir govt. has announced that it would be spending around Rs 1 lakh Cr on development works with special emphasis on education and road connectivity over the next five years.
  • The state is set to enter an era of unprecedented development as the government is spending Rs 1 lakh Cr on roads, buildings and creation of other public assets in the next five years.
  • The new projects are being taken up regularly whereas old ones are being completed with expedited urgency.


India’s first micro forest being built in Chhattisgarh

  • Micro forest (land of 19 acres), housed around 70 government office buildings in Raipur (Chhattisgarh) is being converted into India’s first micro forest to create an oxy-zone.
  • The micro forest will provide fresh air to Raipur
  • Under this, they will plant trees and also creating their own microcosmic forest.
  • This move is mainly to create an oxyzone in the midst of packed houses in the city.


Indian Railways earned Rs.540 crore through flexi fare scheme

  • Indian Railways has earned an additional revenue of Rs. 540 crores in less than a year through the flexi fare scheme.
  • On 9th September 2016, the flexi fare scheme was launched and applicable in Rajdhani, Shatabdi & Duronto trains.
  • It allows 10 % of the seats to be sold at the normal fare and thereafter increasing it by 10% with every 10% of berths sold with a ceiling of 50%.


Kynan Chenai wins bronze at 7th Asian Shotgun

  • Indian shooter ‘Kynan Chenai’ has won a bronze in men's trap event at the 7th Asian Championship Shotgun at Astana, Kazakhstan.
  • Kynan first shot 116 out of 125 to qualify for the six men final round in the third spot and then held on to the position till the end of the finals.


Ravindra Jadeja tops ICC ranking among all-rounders in Test Cricket

  • India's Ravindra Jadeja edged out Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh) to claim the top-rank among all-rounders apart from maintaining top position in the bowlers' chart in the latest ICC test match rankings.
  • Jadeja currently has 438 points among the all-rounders while Shakib has 431 points.
  • In batsmen rankings, Steve Smith and Joe Root are still at No. 1 & 2 positions respectively.
  • In the bowlers' list Ravichandran Ashwin dropped a place to be third with Jimmy Anderson a notch below Jadeja.


World Athletics C'ships: Wayde Van Niekerk retains men's 400m title

  • Olympic Champion Wayde Van Niekerk (South African) won the men's 400 meters event and retained his title in World Athletics Championships, London.
  • Niekerk, clocked 43.98 seconds to finish at the top of the podium.
  • Steve Gardiner (Bahamas) finished second in the event while Abdalelah Haroun (Qatar) claimed the Bronze.
