Bopanna-Dabrowski clinch French Open mixed-doubles title


  • Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna and his teammate Gabriela Dabrowski (Canada) have won the French Open mixed doubles title 2017 in Paris, France.
  • They beat the pair of Anna-Lena Groenefeld (Germany) and Robert Farah (Colombia) by 2-6, 6-2, 12-10.
  • Rohan Bopanna has become only the fourth Indian (after Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Sania Mirza) to win a Grand Slam crown.
  • Now, Indians have accounted for 20 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles.

  • The French Open (Roland Garros) is a premier clay court tennis championship event held at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris.
  • The event has been named after the French aviator Roland Garros.

K G Karmakar & Gauri Shankar appointed directors of IPPB


  • K G Karmakar and Gauri Shankar have been appointed as the new Independent Directors of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) for a period of three years.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved their appointment to the post on the board of directors of the bank.
  • The IPPB has been incorporated as a public-sector bank under the Department of Posts with 100% equity of the government of India.


Trump nominates Christopher Wray as new FBI director


  • US President Donald Trump has nominated former justice department official Christopher Wray as the new director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).
  • He would be replacing James Comey.
  • Wray’s nomination would require confirmation from the US Senate.

Note: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States, which simultaneously serves as the nation's prime federal law enforcement agency.

Former ICHR chairman Basudev Chatterji passes away


  • Noted historian and former ICHR (Indian Council for Historical Research) chairman Basudev Chatterji passed away in Guwahati, Assam.
  • He taught at St Stephen's College in Delhi, the University of Hyderabad besides supervising undergraduates at the University of Cambridge.
  • Chatterji had proposed for documenting histories both archival as well as non-archival materials such as church records, private letters of the Second World War period, oral histories, folktales, and folk songs.


Eminent rights activist Mehrunnisa Dalwai passes away


  • Eminent rights activist Mehrunnisa Dalwai (87-year) and the protagonist of a reformist movement 'Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal' passed away in Pune.
  • She worked for justice and equal rights for Muslim women and spearheaded a march in Mumbai seeking abolition of triple 'talaq'.
  • She also founded Islamic Research Institute and Maharashtra Talaq Mukti Morcha.


Petrol, diesel prices to be revised daily across country from 16th June


  • Oil Marketing Companies (Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation) will make a daily revision in retail selling prices of Petrol and Diesel from 16th June across the country.
  • Now, the decision will make the retail prices more reflective of the current market conditions, minimizing the volatility in the retail price of Petrol and Diesel.
  • It will also enhance transparency in the system, besides enabling the smoother flow of products from the refinery to retail outlets.


Stressed assets of Indian banks will increase through 2019: Moody's


  • According to the rating agency Moody's report, Stressed assets of Indian banks will increase through 2019 and capitalization will remain a key credit weakness for state-owned lenders.
  • Infusion by the government remains the only viable source for shoring up the capital base and the asset quality outlook for the banking sector will remain weak.
  • Gross Non-Performing Assets will increase to between 8.2 and 8.5 lakh crore rupees, or to between 9.9 and 10.3% of total advances by 2017-18-end, from 7.7 lakh crore rupees at the end of March 2017.
  • It estimates that the 11 Moody’s rated public-sector banks will require external equity capital of between 70,000 and 95,000 crore rupees.


Twenty-one new railway stations to come up on Konkan route


  • Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) is planning to develop 21 new stations on the Konkan route.
  • A total 147 km's of railway track would be doubled under the expansion and modernisation project at a cost of Rs. 3,000 crore.
  • After addition, the total number of stations on the route to 87 and reduce the distance between two stations to 8.3 km from 12.75 kms.


Amit Shah inaugurates 'Modi fest' in Raipur


  • Today, Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) president Amit Shah has inaugurated the 'Modi fest' (Making of Developed India Festival) in Raipur Chhattisgarh.
  • The exhibition will showcase NDA government's achievements in last three years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
  • Jan-Dhan Yojana, Pradan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyothi Bima Yojana, Pension Yojana and many more schemes are included in the list.


Tamil Nadu govt signs MoU with Aviation Ministry for implementation of UDAN scheme


  • Tamil Nadu govt. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union Civil Aviation Ministry for the implementation of the UDAN scheme in the state.
  • The MoU has been signed in presence of the chief minister Tamil Nadu ‘Edappadi K Palaniswamy’ and the Airports Authority of India Chairman ‘Guruprasad Mohapatra’ at the Secretariat in Fort St George, Chennai.
  • Three of the tier-two industrial towns (Hosur, Salem, and Neyveli) are to be developed in the first phase where airstrips are available.


Second National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga


  • Today, the second National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga has been inaugurated by the Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik in New Delhi.
  • The conference aims at giving insight to the journalists about the scientific aspects of yoga and its benefits for health.
  • Eminent experts of yoga and modern medicine will present highlights from recent research works on aspects of yoga.
  • The theme of the conference is Yoga for Health and Harmony.

Note:
  • The conference has been organized by Ministry of AYUSH in association with Press Information Bureau (PIB) as a part of celebrations of the 3rd International Day of Yoga on 21st of this month.
  • More than 150 Health Editors and media persons from National, Regional and International media organizations are expected to attend the conference.
