Dipa Karmakar becomes first Indian to qualify for final of artistic Gymnastics

Dipa Karmakar becomes the first Indian to qualify for final of artistic Gymnastics at the Rio 2016 Olympics. She qualifies vault apparatus with average score of 14.850 and grabbed the 8th position to enter into the finals. The finals of the artistic Gymnastics will be held on August 14, 2016.
The 22-year-old from Tripura is the first ever Indian female gymnast to qualify for the Olympics after 52 years.



Tarun Ramadorai Committee to look at household finances in India
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had set up a Tarun Ramadorai committee to look at the various facets of household finance in India. The committee will also set a benchmark for India’s position vis-à-vis both the peer countries and advanced countries. Dr. Tarun Ramadorai is a Professor of Financial Economics at University of Oxford. The committee will have members from financial sector regulators, namely, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) apart from Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Committee is expected to submit its report by end-July 2017.

Mission Bhagiratha: Safe drinking water scheme, launched in Telangana
With an outlay of 42000 crore rupees, Telangana government introduces a new scheme i.e. “Mission Bhagiratha”. The objective of the scheme is to provide safe drinking water to everyone. The scheme was launched by Prime Minister at Komatibanda Village, Gajwel in Medak District of Telangana.
Under the scheme, 100 liters of clean drinking water per person will be provided in rural households and 150 liters per person will be provided in urban households. It has planned to provide water to about 25,000 rural habitations and 67 urban habitations by March 2018.

Project “Swachh Survekshan-2017” launched in New Delhi
Union Minister of Urban Development M.Venkaiah Naidu launched a project “Swachh Survekshan-2017” in New Delhi. The objective of this project is to assess and rank 500 cities based on levels of sanitation and efforts made by respective urban local bodies.

Key points –
The cities with a population of one lakh and above each, heritage and tourism cities, capital cities with less than one lakh population are included in this survey. The ranking of the cities will be decided on the basis of the reports submitted by urban local bodies on the progress made towards construction of toilets, feedback of citizens and independent observation of sanitation levels. The survey will be conducted by Quality Council of India in 500 cities and towns.

Bernard Farrelly, Australian surfing champion passed away
Bernard Farrelly an Australian surfing champion passed away at the age of 71. He was known as Midget for his slight size. In 1964, he won the first official surfing World Championship at Sydney’s Manly Beach. He was inducted into the Australia Hall of Fame in 1985.

2nd National Handloom Day observed on 7th August 2016
The 2nd National Handloom day was observed on 7th August 2016. On 29th July, 2015, Government of India had notified 7th August as National Handloom Day. The objective of the National Handloom day is to generate awareness about the importance of handloom industry and its contribution to the socioeconomic development of the country.

Note: On 7th August, 1905, the Swadeshi Movement was formally launched for revival of domestic products and production processes. Thus, Government of India has declared August 7 as National Handloom Day every year, in memory of this.

Uttarakhand leads chart in industry, service sectors growth: Assocham
According to the Assocham reports, Uttarakhand state leads the chart of the states in the country in terms of growth in the industry and service sectors in the last ten years. The report covers data of ten years from 2004-05 to 2014-15. Uttarakhand has ranked at the first position by attaining the highest compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.5 per cent and 12.3 per cent in industry and services sectors during the period among states across India. 
Assocham National Secretary General D S Rawat said, the state contribution to India's economy has also marginally increased from just about 0.8 per cent in 2004-2005 to 1.2 per cent in 2013-14.
