Union Health Minister J P Nadda Launches ‘Kayakalp Fortnight’
Union Health Minister on 20 May launched the ‘Kayakalp Fortnight’ at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. It has to be observed from the date of launch to 3 June 2016 throughout the country in various Central Government hospitals. The aim of the Kayakalp Fortnight is to intensify Kayakalp initiative under the Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan. Under the initiative, various activities towards cleanliness will be undertaken during the fortnight. Kayakalp initiative was launched in 2015 to set protocols for hygiene and sanitation at government health facilities. It is an initiative towards total “Swacchta” in public health facilities.

Tsai Ing-wen Sworn In As Taiwan’s First Woman President
Tsai Ing-wen was sworn-in as the President of Taiwan on 20 May 2016. With this, she became the first woman to hold the post in Taiwan. She succeeds outgoing President Ma Ying-jeou. She is the leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which favours independence from China. Earlier in January 2016, Tsai led the DPP had won the Parliamentary and Presidential elections. Tsai’s victory was the biggest mandate ever won by a DPP President and is only the second-ever victory for the DPP since Taiwan split with China in 1949.

Indian Journalist Philip Abraham Elected Deputy Mayor In UK
Indian journalist and Councillor Philip Abraham has been elected the Deputy Mayor of Loughton town in the United Kingdom.Councillor Abraham was presented with the Deputy Mayor’s Badge by Carol Davis, the newly-elected mayor.V K Krishna Menon was the first person from Kerala to become a Councillor in Britain. He was a Labour Councillor for the Borough of St Pancras from 1934 to 1939.

Ratan P Watal Appointed as Niti Aayog’s Principal Adviser
Former Finance Secretary, Ratan P Watal has been appointed as the Principle Adviser for social sector in Niti Aayog on 20 May 2016. He has been appointed to the post for three years. The new appointment for Watal comes a fortnight after his two-month extended tenure ended in April. He was to retire in February. However, Watal later got a two-month extension as the Finance Secretary. Watal, a retired IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, had been Finance Secretary between August last year and April this year.
