Kulkarni Won 2016 Commonwealth Short Story Regional Prize
Indian author Parashar Kulkarni has won the regional Commonwealth Short Story Prize for 2016 for the Asia region. He was bestowed with this award for his politically grounded, funny fiction story ‘Cow and Company’ about four men in search of a cow. The short story was adjudged the ‘best piece of unpublished short fiction in English’ from Asia and will receive 2500 pounds prize.

ICG Offshore Patrol Vessel ‘Shaurya’ Launched
Goa-based defence shipyard, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), on 5 May launched Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Shaurya at Vasco. The is the fifth ship of a series of six off-shore patrol vessels  (OPVs) that the Indian Coast Guard had tasked the Vasco defence public sector undertaking to build. The vessel is capable of cruising at a speed of 23 knots and has a range of 6,000 nautical miles. It will be fitted with state-of-the-art machinery like the integrated machinery control system and integrated bridge system. The ICGS Shaurya will be commissioned into service in early 2017. The vessel carries four boats for boarding party operations. One 30 mm gun and two 12.7 mm guns associated with fire control system form the main weaponry package.It will be deployed for ocean surveillance and for monitoring sea lanes of communication.

Sunil Lanba Appointed as Chief of the Naval Staff
“Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of Western Naval Command, has been appointed as the new Chief of Naval Staff on 5 May 2016. He will be 23rd chief of Indian Navy and 21st as an Indian. He will assume the charge on 31 May 2016 and shall have full three-year-term in office till 31 May 2019. He will succeed present Navy Chief Admiral Robin K. Dhowan, who will superannuate from the post on 31 May 2016.”

Rajesh Chandra Appointed Chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security
Senior IPS officer Kumar Rajesh Chandra on 5 May was appointed the Chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). He has been appointed in place of IPS officer G S Malhi, who had completed his tenure as BCAS chief in November 2012. Since then crucial post was lying vacant. Kumar Rajesh Chandra  is a 1985 batch IPS officer of Bihar cadre. Prior to this appointment, Chandra was working as Additional Director General (Modernisation) of Bihar Police. BCAS is a nodal independent agency of the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for civil aviation security. It was established as in January 1978 as a department of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) based on the recommendation of Pande Committee.
